Glamping options near Hotchkiss, Colorado typically feature canvas accommodation structures on platforms that offer protection from wildlife and weather fluctuations common in this high desert microclimate. Late spring and early fall mark the most comfortable camping seasons, with daytime temperatures around 70-85°F.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: North Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison offers access to trout fishing along the Gunnison River. "The greatest camping experience a family could possibly have! We go every summer and camp (in a tent) for about 10 days. The weather is perfect and the trout are plentiful!" shares Hannah K.
Orchard experiences: The Campground at Big B's Delicious Orchards allows visitors to camp among working apple trees. "We had fun being next to a working orchard, a great restaurant with delicious food and a little store. Lots of outdoor seating. There are also special events on the property such as festivals, concerts, etc. it's rather fun," notes Kim L.
Lake recreation: Ward Lake Campground provides direct water access at 10,000 feet elevation. "A very nice camp ground for tent campers, very few people, beautiful scenes and within a very short distance of good hiking. Campground staff was helpful and we had a beautiful site right by the lake which is open to fishing and swimming," states Peter H.
What campers like
Secluded camping pads: The North Rim Campground sites offer solitude not found at other area locations. "Lots of spots, but very spread out and quiet. There are toilets in the center, water available, and a short hike to the rangers," explains Hamen L.
Luxury tent amenities: Cedar Creek RV Park provides glamping accommodations with comfortable facilities. "This RV park is close to a bowling alley and several restaurants. It's great for a quick stay. There does appear to be many long-term residents, but they are separate from the retro campers. Friendly staff, reasonable prices," reports Sarah S.
Waterfront locations: Cottonwood Lake Campground features spread-out camping spots along the shoreline. "The campsites here are well spread out and right on the water. We found we had privacy and still had great hiking spots near by," says Hannah R.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Black Canyon's North Rim Campground fills quickly during peak season. "I arrived right at 1 to make sure I could get a spot the Friday of Father's Day weekend. By 5:30, all the spots were full and were full earlier the following night, so be sure to arrive early," warns Jordan L.
Weather preparation: Ward Lake experiences rapid weather changes at its 10,000-foot elevation. "Be prepared to put a cover on your tent as intermittent thunderstorms come up out of no where. There is no cell service unless you go down route 65 a little more to the beautiful views of the valley," advises Peter H.
Seasonal water levels: Paonia State Park Campground water levels fluctuate dramatically by season. "The campground is about 15 miles from the town of Paonia. The ranch above us was moving cattle higher for the summer. When we returned to camp we were surprised to see everything undisturbed in our camp, but we still had 2 cows there in the bushes," notes Patricia B.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly features: Luxury glamping yurts at Ridgway State Park include comfortable beds and heating systems. "The elk ridge campground was beautiful with huge sites. Many of them pull through. Bathrooms are clean and free showers. A great park for kids. I loved the activities, Hikes, swimming and absolutely stunning views!" shares Jennifer D.
Entertainment options: Big B's Delicious Orchards provides family activities beyond standard camping. "Our kids aged 8 and 11 absolutely loved the big tree swings. We camped by the pond in a tent. The prepared food and cider were tasty, we got some fresh fruit and processed items to bring along with us," notes Greg.
Safety considerations: Cottonwood Lake requires insect protection for comfortable family camping. "I cannot stress this enough, get there early if going on a weekend! We arrived at 2:30 and got one of the last spots. Also, bug spray! Overall a great trip!" advises Tiffany H.
Tips from RVers
Hookup details: Riverbend RV Park & Cabins offers full-service sites with reliable utilities. "The WiFi was five stars which is rare in most RV parks. Super fast speeds. The laundry rooms was clean with new equipment," reports David L.
Spacing between sites: Uncompaghre River Resort provides ample space for larger rigs. "Stayed for a week in one of the back-in sites in the South section of the campground. The Uncompaghre River was about 30 yards behind the camp site. Sites are large, no issues to fit my 43' 5th wheel and Truck," explains Gordon D.
Site preparation: Cedar Creek RV Park has gravel sites that require leveling. "Nice park. Wifi and T-Mobile service are good. Park is clean and front desk people are friendly and helpful. All spots are on gravel, but there is a large pet yard as well as a grassy area with a large play structure for the kids," notes Kathy J.
