Bertrand's High Desert Mobile Home & RV Park

Good Place to Stop Over for a Night

Came here after "visiting" the other so called RV park in this area. This is a nice place and we were greeted by the friendly maintenance guy as soon as we pulled in.

For overnighters there is a separate area from the long term residents with level pull through sites and full hook ups (20, 30 and 50amp) for $30/night.  One of us felt that being secluded away from the main park gave the overnighters area a spooky lonely vibe at night (the other of us didn't feel that way and felt fine).

There is also a self pay drop box (if you need to pay with credit card or want a receipt pay at the office) right outside the fenced overnighter area which also has an easily accessed dump station and potable water for $10 fee if you just need to dump and fill.

The friendly maintenance guy came around to make sure we had everything we needed after we set up. This is right off of Hwy 178 so there is road noise but it quieted down at night. The area is clean and there are dumpsters available as well as a laundry room which is inside the residential area. Laundry was $1.75/wash and $1 for dryer. This park is a good place to stay the night or for a chore day while traveling through.

Good cell service with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, unsure if park has WiFi available.

There's also an RV parts store next door which we did not check out.

Overall a nice clean place, nothing fancy or beautiful but a good place to clean up before heading back into boondocking.

    Walker Pass Campground

    Small and Quiet

Along Hwy 178 towards Ridgecrest you'll find this campground that is small but quiet and clean. It is not for big rigs or RVs.

There are 2 sites with fire pits and covered picnic tables that could fit a large van at most. There is one other spot that is level but has no fire pit or covered table. Further back are several scattered picnic tables and tent spots. There are also 2 unisex ADA accessible pit toilet bathrooms which were quite filthy.

This is a stop along the Pacific Crest Trail. The scenery is an amazing mix of Joshua Trees, pines, chaparral, mountains and large rocks, some snow on the peaks facing north. It is close to the highway so there is some road noise and people stopping to use the bathroom. The road in is paved and narrow and potholed but passable.

There was no cell service with AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile.

There is a donation based drop box for camping fee so pay what you want or what you can afford.

Fires and charcoal grills are not allowed per sign at info board, camp stoves are ok.

    KRS RV Resort@Camp James

    Amazing Time

First time to the Kern River. Loved it. We were there August 1-6. The River was a little low but it was perfect for us with our 5 year old son. We were able to float down the river in our inner tubes safely. We were told May to June the river is very high in this area. We also fished in the river. Our camp site was great. We stayed in site 81 in our class C RV. Corner site on a creek that ran through the campground. The creek was great to sit in to escape the heat and float down. Lots of kids and dog friendly. The WIFI was good to stream TV and ATT cell service was good too. The sites had power, water and cable TV hook up. There is a dump station in the campground. They clean and rake all camp sites after each use and they enforce the 10:00pm quiet time. It is a short walk/ride to Kern River Brewery. Or it is about a hour drive to Trail of 100 Giants Sequoia Trees. Can’t wait to stay here again.

    Desert Empire Fair RV Park

    Great for a reset stop.

We are full time RVers and stayed here 1 night after boondocking a week and heading to our next boondocking destination. This is a perfect stop to dump, fill water, do laundry and just do an overall reset of our RV. I was able to deep clean and get rid of trash. The only thing they didn't have was propane and gas but they had everything else we needed.

Booking & Space: Was easy online. $35 for pull through site for capacity up to 42'. Sites are close together but still far enough to have all slide outs out and room to walk between.

Amenities: Big trash and recycling bins were a bonus. We did 9 loads of laundry, can only load them half way and the washing drum is a little small. 3 washers, 3 dryers. All of the units used the Payrange app except 1 dryer is quarters only. The dryer drums are pretty large so we were able to just split the 3rd load between the 2 dryers that use the Payrange app. It was easy to download the app, add funds, scan the barcode of the machine, set the settings on the machine and start. The washers recommend not to use powder detergent and half the amount of liquid detergent. No coin machine for breaking down change. Also no laundry supply stuff for purchase. Overall our stuff cleaned and dried without problems. The door does get stuck and seems locked after entering the code correctly.

Check-in was easy. Just pull into our site and hook up. Check in is after 2 PM and checkout before 2 PM.

Hookups: Water pressure was good. Electrical has a meter but there's no additional charge for it. Black/Grey water dump and water spigot at each site.

Area was very quiet. No road noise and campers were also quiet. It is very well lit all night and cameras are everywhere.

Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. 3 stalls in the women's and the 3 showers for additional no charge. Each shower had 3 hooks and a seat. There is no bench or seating outside of the showers.

We will definitely be back. Thank you for a great experience.

    Unexpected

We heard good things about this campground from family so we decided to give it a shot. It’s about an hour and 15 minutes from our home in Bakersfield. That road off of the 65 is pretty decent as we have a 32 foot fifth wheel. As usual some sites are better than others there are some creek side sites that are very large and if there’s water are very nice. They have tent only sites as well. On our first trip we stayed in a pull through site. There is not a whole lot of space between campsites in this loop but it’s doable. They also have a stocked pond on site. However if you want to keep any of the fish caught, you have to purchase them. There are trails to hike. FYI, there is no cell reception and no provided wifi. Personally I think that’s a good thing 😬.

    Shaded Haven RV Park

Worst campground I’ve ever stayed at!

5+ years Full time RVer, worst ever campground we have ever stayed at, stayed in many states, long-term short-term, stayed at this one for two months, although had a reservation for three. Sites are too tight, everything‘s grayish/dusty and dirty, you’re near a rail track, that blows its horn for minutes 24/7, that includes 2 AM, that includes 4 AM. Many of the neighbors you’ll see look like they’re on (mental) disability and don’t look healthy. Hot tub is smelly and yellow water too often although they state they clean it almost weekly. I god major depression staying here.

    Nelson Falls RV Park

First rate site, definitely recommended, quaint and quiet.

Communication with the host was amazing, we went from the Thursday before Memorial Day to Memorial Monday.  Everything was amazing.  Very quiet community.

Full hookups for our 5th wheel, spacious sites, flushing restrooms and showers if you wanted.  Starlink worked perfect, though there was wifi available.

    A couple notes:

Zero Cell coverage (we took that as a good thing), but make sure to download your google map.

The drive up is a little daunting with going up the mountain, but the road was fine just take your time it will be worth it.

    Frandy Park Campground

    Easy access to Rafting Co.

Located in Kernville - has a small store, showers, dispersed chemical toilets. Premium sites by the River are nice with plenty of shade from cottonwood trees. Commercial campground conveniently affiliated with rafting company on site. Friendly staff. Close to brewery, gas station, groceries in town. Good place for first timers to get to know the area.

Ricardo Campground — Red Rock Canyon State Park

    Gorgeous and Clean

The views from this campground are absolute stellar. The sites and pit toilets are clean and plenty of spaces were available. It was all first come, first served and self-pay when we arrived. Drive the loop and find your spot, then return the payment in the envelope provided to the pay station. I’m sure it’s a busy place on the weekends. It’s in an OHV area, so off road vehicle noise is to be expected, but it was minimal. The road in is smooth, sites are easy to access (with a few pull-through sites) and there are a few paved ADA specific sites as well. The sites up by the cliffs are offer the best views but many may be difficult to get level in if you have a motorhome or travel trailer.

What to do

Tubing adventures on Kern River: At KRS RV Resort@Camp James, campers enjoy floating activities during summer months. "We were able to float down the river in our inner tubes safely. We were told May to June the river is very high in this area," notes one visitor who stayed with their 5-year-old son in August.

Explore unique desert formations: Day trips to Trona Pinnacles make an excellent excursion from camping bases. "Ghost towns, abandoned mines, Schmidt Tunnel, movie road, robbers Roost, Red Rock Canyon State Park, trona Pinnacles. Great weather in early October too," reports a camper about exploration opportunities.

Glider watching: Mountain Valley RV Park sits adjacent to a glider airport, offering unusual entertainment. "Sites are right off runway for glider flying. We ended up extending stay from one night to four to watch air force cadet competition," shares one reviewer who appreciated this unique opportunity.

What campers like

Riverside camping privacy: Rivernook Campground offers sites directly on the Kern River. "The prime reason is they have campsites directly on the Kern River. Also while camping there you will maintain cell reception, there is WiFi, restrooms available 24/7, and FREE hot showers between 7am to 8pm," explains one camper who enjoyed floating with "a nice cold beer in hand."

Orange picking opportunities: Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield provides a unique camping experience among fruit trees. Limited bathroom access hours: Some facilities have restricted hours. "Bathrooms are locked between 10 pm and 7:30 am (not good for those of us with early mornings)," cautions one guest about Mountain Valley RV Park.

Mountain driving challenges: Accessing higher elevation campgrounds requires careful driving. Road access to Camp Nelson involves mountain terrain with elevations above 4,000 feet.

Quiet locations for stargazing: Nelson Falls RV Park offers peaceful nights with minimal light pollution. "Beautiful and quiet little campground with sequoia trees all around," notes one reviewer who appreciated the tranquility.

Seasonal water levels: Check river conditions before planning water activities. "We were there August 1-6. The River was a little low but it was perfect for us with our 5 year old son," explains a family that found safer conditions later in summer.

Tips from RVers

Overnight reset stops: Bertrand's High Desert Mobile Home & RV Park provides practical amenities for travelers between boondocking stays. "$35 per night with full hookups makes this place great for a night or two between longer boondocking stays.
