Loma Mar camping offers a unique coastal redwood experience at an elevation of approximately 300 feet, where summer temperatures average 75°F during the day and drop to 55°F at night. The region maintains a crumb-free policy at most campgrounds to protect the diverse wildlife, including raccoons, deer, and various bird species that inhabit the dense redwood forests surrounding camping areas.
What to do
Hike to Sempervirens Falls: At Big Basin Redwoods State Park, a short hike leads to this natural attraction. "We stayed here for a few nights and thought it was clean and spacious. Close to the visitor center. We did some hiking as well, a popular and short hike is to Sempervirens Falls," notes Queenie M. from Big Basin Redwoods SP.
Explore local trails: The area features well-marked paths for all skill levels. "Large, user-friendly campsites surrounded by redwood trees. Great ferny hiking trails for every level of camper/hiker. Very easy access to campsites and near Pescadero and Highway One," according to Renee W. at Butano State Park.
Visit nearby beaches: The coastline is just a short drive from most campgrounds. "The campground is very close to PCH/Highway 1 and the beaches are lovely. PCH is also dotted with farms and fruit stands, artisan pies, etc," writes Kathleen C. about Ben Ries Campground.
Climb to ocean views: For panoramic vistas, try the ridge trails at Butano. "This place is magnificent. I've hiked every trail here. It's pretty amazing to climb up and see the views of the ocean on a clear day," shares Kelly S.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Loma Mar offer spacious camping areas. "Sites are spaced apart nicely. The bathrooms are pretty clean, flush toilets, no showers, no hot water and no soap. There is potable water throughout the campground, recycle bins, trash bins(animal proof) and bear lockers and firepits at each site," reports Kathleen C.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The redwood ecosystem supports diverse wildlife. "We stayed at campsite 1. The sites have a lot of room and privacy. Most sites are within redwood groves. The trails are well marked, and there are plenty of them!" says Lizzy C. about Ben Ries Camp Ground.
Proximity to towns: Local communities offer supplies and amenities. "The closest town is Pescadaro, and has a tiny main street with an excellent coffee shop, and grocery store with fresh baked pies, breads, jams, sauces, and a deli counter as well as sundry items. There are cheese farms/creameries as well surrounding the park," writes Kathleen C.
KOA convenience: For those wanting more amenities, "Full hook-ups are available, there is an on site restaurant and outdoor bar, and there is close proximity to multiple beaches and tide pools. The resort also has great activities for kids that they occasionally bring on site, such as a climbing wall and nature talks with live animals," according to Daniel D. at Santa Cruz North-Costanoa KOA.
What you should know
Weather conditions: Coastal influence means varied temperatures. "Great weather, lots of shade at the campsite and on the hikes. Coast was a cool 60's-70's but warm in the sun (the coast/beaches are windy), night time was a lovely 55-59 degrees, easy to sleep, not too cold (first week in August)," shares Kathleen C.
Wildlife precautions: Local fauna requires proper food storage. "It is also a crumb free park and they take it very seriously. There is no cell service," notes Kathleen C. Another camper warns, "Camped here in off season in November and it was us and maybe 2 other campers. Feels super remote and primitive. Tucked in a redwood grove. Hikes are awesome. Flush toilets. But aggressive squirrels."
Reservation challenges: Popular sites book quickly. "Hard to find a spot here these days but a great camping spot above the beach," says Willow M. about New Brighton State Beach Campground.
Shower access: Facilities vary by location. "The bathrooms were in very rough shape. Considering the $35 price tag to pitch a tent, we were a bit disappointed. The campground is likely much nicer in the middle of the week when there aren't so many people," notes Marc A. at Half Moon Bay State Beach.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Many campgrounds offer specialized programs. "The resort also has great activities for kids that they occasionally bring on site, such as a climbing wall and nature talks with live animals. The sites at the bottom of the first loop with awesome sunset views are my favorite," suggests Daniel D.
Beach access for children: Consider proximity to water. "This has it all. Beautiful beach walking distance from campground. Bike or walking trails to wonderful beaches and places to eat. Short drive to many other areas," recommends Carina B. at Francis Beach Campground.
Playground facilities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "This is a great camp ground for families as well as seniors! Observed great activities for kids! This is a great place!" shares Dave at Santa Cruz North-Costanoa KOA.
Slug spotting: Kids enjoy the unique wildlife. "The slugs were hanging out in trees all around us and it was so much fun looking for them. The sites were very spacious and this has probably been one of my favorite campgrounds!" reports Adventure M.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose your spot wisely in pet-friendly camping areas near Loma Mar. "Spots are very close together but the neighbors are very polite. There is a nice playground next to an equally nice café called the pinecone. Bathrooms could be a lot cleaner," advises Alma L. about Santa Cruz North-Costanoa KOA.
RV amenities: Look for campgrounds with necessary hookups. "Entrance is a little nerve racking on your first visit, but once your at your site you can relax. Bathrooms are a little dated, no cell service but good WiFi if your close to the office," says Ben T. about Cotillion Gardens RV Park.
Dump station planning: Allow extra time at busy locations. "Warning: the line for the dump station wound through nearly the entire park," cautions Alma L. about New Brighton State Beach Campground.
Site spacing considerations: RV spots vary significantly by location. "Sites are clean, well maintained, and about a 20 minute walk to the ocean. Very clean, well maintained, and about a 20 minute walk to the ocean. Decent takeout from the restaurant and great cocktails! Very convenient dog park," shares Andrea A.
