Best RV Parks & Resorts near Helendale, CA

RV parks near Helendale provide varying levels of accommodation with different hookup configurations. Shady Lane RV Camp in Barstow offers full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections on gravel pads with concrete patios. Arabian RV Oasis maintains big-rig friendly sites with trash service and 50-amp hookups, though the grounds require maintenance according to recent visitors. Military Park at Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base includes level concrete slabs with full hookups at $35 per night. The Red Hook Gate area contains only two RV sites with water, electric, sewer hookups, and picnic tables, making advance reservations essential. "Sites were decent size but fairly close together so don't expect a lot of privacy," noted one camper about regional options.

Between Barstow and Big Bear Lake, most RV parks remain open year-round despite desert temperature extremes that can exceed 110°F in summer months. Pull-through sites accommodate larger motorhomes at several locations, though navigation to mountain parks may require caution on winding roads with steep grades. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with stronger connections at lower elevation parks and spotty coverage in mountain locations. Sanitary dump stations are available at Shady Lane, Arabian RV Oasis, and the Military Park, though not at all smaller facilities. Pet policies generally allow dogs with standard restrictions, and some parks enforce strict quiet hours. During peak travel seasons, particularly spring and fall, advance reservations are recommended as many parks fill with overnight travelers using the area as a waypoint.

    Mountain Lakes Resort

    Great family friendly place

My wife and I have been coming up here for years. We used to use her parents fifth wheel or use a cabin but recently purchased our own travel trailer. Now we come up here with our kids and I can’t say enough about how family friendly it is.

    Pineknot

Pineknot Campground, Big Bear Lake, Ca

A bit challenging to locate via Google Maps... Just go up (south) Summit Blvd, when you get to the parking lot of the ski resort, veer towards the left, and just past a concrete wall, you'll see the little Pineknot Campground sign attached to an aluminium pole. The campground is very cozy, countless tall pine trees, clean bathrooms, clean sites, water from taps, no hookups, and not for big rigs. The hosts are friendly, but strict! No generators from 8 pm to 8 am, a $3000 fine if your campfire is left unattended, and no rowdy obnoxious behavior is tolerated! We appreciated the rules, and thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful, quiet, deep in the woods getaway!!

    Barstow-Calico KOA

    Beautiful desert site

I had to change my reservation three times, and the staff was incredibly helpful. They went above and beyond to give us the easiest possible stay. The campground itself was reasonably clean with a gorgeous view of the desert and mountains. Sites laid out well and most are pull through and accommodate big rigs. Pool, laundry, general store, showers and lavatories. They did not however have the shuttle to the silver mine as advertised (ended with Covid) and the Enterprise rental in Barstow does not “pick you up“ and were rude besides.

    Shady Lane RV Camp

    A Handy Desert Stop

Traveling while pulling my utility trailer along makes slow going. And pulling up a long, long, long desert mountain grade can be downright exhausting.

So this is a mighty grateful thumbs up review. Robert made my day when I phoned up in the late afternoon and offered me a limited use rate on one their full hookup sites.

And of course, I got in real late, just after late closing hours–10 pm!

I got the last pull through site at the end of the lane. It was a breeze to pull in, get my deep cycle battery charging. 30 Amp with an adapter is all I need.

Shady Lane is mostly populated by real big rigs. So a 50amp socket is also on the post.

The park is a little distance from the highway, so it's blessedly quiet overall. After a grueling pull from Las Vegas, it was a wonderful blessing to crawl into my tent with my feline road companion, Missy. She just loves tent camping the very best. It was down in the 40s last night, but our traveling bed is a cushy cloud ☁️ from Heaven 🌠🌌✨ Just me and Missy and all those stars on that dark desert night.

Just woke to a lovely quiet morning here at Shady Lane. Fully renewed, to make my long drive down towards San Diego.

Looks they offer all the basics, showers, laumdry, and the same wifi network is offered all over these desert parts.. So once signed up, its the same login wherever you go on this network.. That's handy. Great wifi signal all the way down at the end of the lane, too.

Most importantly, Shady Lane offers tent spots and doesn't get snooty about whether you're pulling a utility trailer, or a spit shined mega-rig. On the phone, when I spoke with Robert, told him what I'm pulling along, he was as nice as can be.

I'm glad I found this quiet little desert overnighter. 🏜 Just right for Missy and me.

    Shady Lane RV Camp

    Not what the picture shows.

The units were spaced tightly together with a gravel pad and concrete patio. It was $45 but with GoodSam down to $40.50. Old park. Friendly staff. Bathrooms and showers aged but clean. I was told there was cable TV but didn't try it. The pet area was a sandy strip by the fence.

    Bonita Ranch Campground

    Just ok overall

Needed somewhere fairly close to home to take my new to us motorhome. Sites were decent size but fairly close together so don’t expect a lot of privacy. Sites interspersed among long term residents. Hookups water and electric at each site. Some shade, trails to riverbed currently mostly dry and Bonita falls about 25 minute walk over river rock. Fire rings available to rent for $5. The biggest issue I had was our electric went out to our loop at about 7:30pm…luckily we are self contained…it still had not been restored when we left the next day at noonish. The lights to the office area and restrooms was still on (thankfully) but not the camp sites.

    Lighthouse Trailer Resort & Marina

    Good stay

Little family owned RV spot— some long termers. Everyone super nice. Big spot, shade of trees, walk down to lake. Full hookup. 7 minutes to big bear lake town. Hiking trails out front gate. Probably not big rig friendly.

    Sawtooth Canyon Campground

    Great, and free

This is a great BLM campground, FREE, individual sites with varying levels of privacy and levelness, no reservations. Each site has a shade structure, table, fire pit, and grill. There are pit toilets but no other amenities. No water and no trash service- please pack your trash out! We had to pick up after some other campers which is just so dumb to have to do. There was a camper there who looked like they had set up for long term residency, and the sheriff came by and kicked them out.

This is also a big rock climbing destination so you’ll have climbers coming in for the day as well. There are some “dispersed” type sites in the brush area so if you show up and all the spots are taken, you can sleep in one of those spots in a pinch until morning. We were there in late December and there were only a couple of other campers, and then again in early January and it was busy on weekends but quiets down during the week.

The road coming in is 1.6 miles of washboard and some big dips, but it’s doable. Cell service is very spotty throughout the campground. Parts of decent ATT or Verizon service, and parts have zero. Lots of hikes and trails and places to walk and scramble.

North Shore Campground - Lake Almanor

Beautiful Camping near Lassen Volcanic National Park

We reserved and camped at this beautiful campground back in July of 2018. It was a great experience. We pulled a 27' Travel Trailer from Livermore, CA and picked out the perfect site #94. It was the furthest RV site north of the campground and we had power, water and sewage. It was a lake front campsite so we had a nice view of the lake right in our "front yard" :-) We had a picnic table and a fire pit for our use.
The fishing was awesome, but I suggest fishing in the mornings before the afternoon winds come in as the weather cools down. We had our kayaks and it is a beautiful lake to kayak. But when it gets windy, know your limits :-)
The campground is close to the Lassen Volcanic National Park. We took a drive there for a visit and it was spectacular.
The campground also has a great store there. It has all the camping necessities. If you are into hiking and biking, this campground has the accommodations for that activity. It also has a kid's park.  They also have cabins if you do not want to use a tent or RV.

Guide to Helendale

RV sites near Helendale, California offer varying camping opportunities in an area that transitions from high desert to mountain terrain. Most campgrounds sit between 2,000-6,000 feet elevation, creating significant temperature differences between valley and mountain locations. Cell service coverage generally decreases with elevation gain, affecting connectivity for travelers needing to stay connected.

What to do

Hiking to waterfalls: Bonita Ranch Campground provides access to trails leading to Bonita Falls. "A waterfall is a short hike away. We also lucked out finding berries in August," notes a camper at Bonita Ranch Campground.

Mountain biking: Skypark Camp RV Resort places visitors directly across from mountain biking trails. "Skypark is right across the street for mountain bikes. Lake Arrowhead is close for supplies or food," reports a reviewer who stayed at Skypark Camp RV Resort.

Fishing and boating: Holloway's Marina & RV Park offers boat rentals and lake access. "We rented a boat on Saturday and was great just to walk out on the dock with the kids. 4 hr rental was just enough. Make reservations for they sell out on the weekends," advises a visitor at Holloway's Marina & RV Park.

What campers like

Mountain views: High elevation campgrounds provide scenic vistas across valleys. "Views are incredible although to squeeze in some sites they made the access roads a bit small. I would skip if I were a big rig, or call and ask for sites that are easy to get into," explains a camper from Skypark Camp RV Resort.

Secluded camping options: Yellow Post campsites offer more private alternatives. "I really dig these spots because they are well spaced out. It's right around the corner from my cabin so it's a great spot to get outside for the weekend without an epic drive," shares a visitor at Keller Peak Yellow Post Campsites.

Swimming in creeks: Natural waterways provide relief during hot weather. "You're literally a box throw away from the creek if you're not really big on hiking but enjoy the scenery this would probably be a good way for you to experience the outdoors in the creek not really any fishing there but you could definitely enjoy the ice cold water on a really super hot day," mentions a camper at Bonita Ranch Campground.

What you should know

Military base access restrictions: Some RV accommodations have specific entry requirements. "Note that this area is an active military installation and reserved for armed services members and their families only! We stopped here looking for a place to camp for the night, and the very polite (but confused) MP advised us that the facility isn't open to the public," warns a visitor regarding Military Park Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base Oasis RV Park.

Limited camping spots in some areas: Certain campgrounds have very few sites available. "The Red Hook Gate area contains only two RV sites with water, electric, sewer hookups, and picnic tables, making advance reservations essential," notes one source about camping options near Helendale.

Weather variations: Mountain locations experience significant temperature swings. "Weather is definitely colder than in the valley, got snow overnight in mid May. Had very bad but there at&t cell reception," reports a Keller Peak visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment amenities: Some campgrounds offer activities beyond camping. "There are outdoor games setup for adults and kids to play. The community firepits were also very lovely," shares a Skypark Camp RV Resort visitor.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between locations. "Restrooms are very clean and each private room includes a shower. No randos," notes one camper at Skypark Camp RV Resort, while another visitor to a different campground described facilities as "aged but clean."

Safety considerations: Some yellow post sites have reported issues. "My last trip was frightening enough that I haven't returned. Late at night a group of locals came to the edge of my site, yelling and using threatening language," cautions a visitor to Keller Peak Yellow Post Campsites.

Tips from RVers

Desert parking conditions: Terrain and pad types affect stabilizing equipment. "The units were spaced tightly together with a gravel pad and concrete patio. It was $45 but with GoodSam down to $40.50. Old park. Friendly staff," reports a camper at Shady Lane RV Camp.

Hookup configurations: Electric service varies between campgrounds. "Full hookups, concrete pads, picnic tables. Many full time campers parked with junk around them. The grounds need a ton of cleanup," states a visitor to Arabian RV Oasis.

Driving challenges: Mountain access requires caution with larger vehicles. "Make sure you take the back way up the mountain. It's no joke pulling a trailer up there," advises a Holloway's Marina & RV Park visitor who successfully navigated with a 265BH Transcend trailer.
