Very open, great for OHV

This place is huge! The dry lake bed is where a lot of the off roaring happens, but there are lots of places to explore too. Be aware that it’s very dusty, obviously the large amount of OHV vehicles causes a giant dust cloud, and it can be windy so the sand gets picked up even more. It’s not our favorite place as the constant dust can be a bit irritating when you’re not participating in the off roading. If you just want to go and ride, this place is very cool.

Desert camping at its finest

Very flat and open, if you like desert camping this might be the place for you. If you're into dirt bike riding there is a wide field of view. If you are into Rockets this is a great place because in some areas there's no vegetation whatsoever.

Note that it does get windy at night so if you camp outside be prepared to be pelted by small rocks and sand all night.

Is El Mirage Dry Lake open for camping and when can I visit?

El Mirage Dry Lake is open for camping year-round. However, weather conditions significantly impact the experience - extreme summer heat and potential winter winds can affect comfort levels. The lake bed is particularly windy at night, so secure tent stakes and equipment are essential. Fall and spring typically offer the most pleasant camping conditions with moderate temperatures. There are no seasonal closures, but always check with the Bureau of Land Management for any temporary restrictions due to weather events or special circumstances before planning your trip.

Where exactly is El Mirage Dry Lake located and how do I get there?

El Mirage Dry Lake is located in the western Mojave Desert of Southern California, near Victorville in San Bernardino County. The dry lakebed sits approximately 30 miles northeast of Palmdale and about 25 miles northwest of Victorville. Access is primarily via El Mirage Road, which connects to Highway 395. The recreation area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management through their Barstow Field Office. When planning your trip, note that while roads to the lakebed are generally accessible by standard vehicles, some surrounding areas may require 4WD. Look for BLM signage directing you to official access points.

What OHV activities are permitted at El Mirage Dry Lake Recreation Area?

El Mirage Dry Lake Recreation Area is a premier destination for various OHV activities. Dirt bike riding is popular thanks to the extensive open terrain and excellent visibility. The vast, flat lakebed provides ideal conditions for high-speed recreation, while surrounding areas offer additional exploration opportunities. The area also accommodates rocket enthusiasts, with certain vegetation-free zones perfect for launches. The enormous size of the recreation area ensures plenty of space for different motorized activities without overcrowding, though be prepared for dusty conditions created by vehicle traffic.

What are the camping options and fees at El Mirage Dry Lake?

El Mirage Dry Lake offers primitive desert camping with no designated sites - campers can set up anywhere suitable on the expansive dry lakebed. The camping is primitive with no hookups, water, or permanent facilities. Fees are typically collected through the Bureau of Land Management, which manages this recreation area. Be prepared for the desert environment by bringing all necessary supplies including plenty of water. The flat, open terrain makes this ideal for those who enjoy spacious, unconfined camping with minimal restrictions. Contact the BLM Barstow Field Office for current fee information and any seasonal permits required.
