    Mission Bay RV Resort

Pay to park next to homeless

Why pay the rates for this RV park when you could just park in the city parking lot for free!

We are here in March and the public parking all the way around the bay is filled with RVs that look rather permanent. Running generators to sit and watch TV late into the night. So far Have not seen any enforcement moving them out or requiring people to move. The on-site laundry is a joke for how many campsites there are. There were five or six washers and dryers, but most of them were full of clothes just sitting there. They apparently do not enforce any regulation on removing your items after being completed. Also getting to the laundry is challenging. If you only have a vehicle. There is no parking near it and it is in the middle of the other section that I believe is long-term. We went 10 minutes away to a public laundromat that was much better.

    Sweetwater Summit Regional Park

    Great San Diego location

San Diego camping is just expensive. This is a reasonably priced park with large spaces, walking and biking trails, fire pits, picnic tables and convenience. Reception is good. The weather is great and there are yellow flowers everywhere. I haven't used the bathrooms but they have lots of individual rooms with toilets and showers. There are a couple of dips going through the park but I'm not seen even the larger rigs have any issue with them. I will definitely stay again.

Culp Valley Primitive Campground — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Great boondocks, great views, lovely camping

I was impressed with how clean this campground was. Great views on the trail nearby. Starry night and gorgeous sunrise. Campground was quiet and good location at a higher elevation from Borrego Springs.

    South Carlsbad State Beach Campground

    Easy Win

South Carlsbad State Beach Campground is a great coastal spot with spacious sites and a really clean, well-kept feel overall. There’s plenty of room between sites compared to other beach campgrounds, which makes it feel a bit more relaxed and less crowded.

It is right next to the road, so there can be some traffic noise, especially at night, but it didn’t take away too much from the experience. What really stood out was how nice and helpful everyone was, both fellow campers and staff, which made the stay even better.

Overall, a super solid beach campground if you want ocean access, clean facilities, and a friendly atmosphere.

Borrego Palm Canyon Campground — Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

    Borrego Palm Canyon

Borrego Palm Canyon Campground is a great mix of desert adventure and comfort. It’s right in the heart of Anza-Borrego, with easy access to the Palm Canyon trail and tons of hiking nearby. The campground is large but well maintained, with a mix of RV hookups and tent sites, plus clean restrooms, water, and coin-operated hot showers.

The desert setting is beautiful, wide open views, amazing stargazing, and those classic quiet desert mornings. There’s not much natural shade, but many sites have ramadas which help a lot in the sun. We went mid-March and it was already starting to get pretty hot during the day, so definitely plan for warm weather and lots of sun exposure.

Overall, it’s a super solid basecamp if you want easy access to trails and a more comfortable desert camping experience without going fully primitive.

Mountains, large shade trees, full RV hookups, general store at office….and quiet! A little difficult finding your site but they also guide you in on a golf cart.

    Silver Strand State Beach

Nice beach but water is often polluted.

The beach has been closed to dogs and humans for almost 2 consecutive years.

Guide to Dulzura

Camping options near Dulzura, California range from basic tent sites to full-service RV resorts within a 30-minute drive. The area sits at elevations between 1,000-3,000 feet with typical temperature swings of 30-40 degrees between day and night. Cell service varies dramatically throughout the region, with most campgrounds experiencing limited or no connectivity in canyon areas.

What to do

Hiking trails: Lake Morena County Park offers access to the Pacific Crest Trail with wildlife viewing opportunities. "There are a number of campsites and it didn't seem like they filled up too quickly. Other than thru hikers, there were only a handful of campers around," notes one visitor to Lake Morena County Park.

Disc golf course: GoodVibes Ranch & Farm maintains a professional disc golf course on their property. One camper mentioned, "I don't bring my discs, but Carolyn and Bernie happily lent me some discs so I could try it out."

Water activities: While some lakes have reduced water levels, fishing remains popular at select locations. A visitor to Lake Jennings shared, "We come here once a week to feed the ducks with my nephews. We've come to this lake my whole life. Don't come here alone and I wouldn't go at dark either."

Explore local towns: The Potrero area provides access to Tecate, Mexico. One camper at Potrero County Park advised, "My advice is to make a day trip into Tecate also, it's only 6 miles away. We parked at the border for 7 bucks, walked across and had tacos."

What campers like

Oak tree shade: The mature oak trees throughout the region provide relief from summer heat. A camper at Potrero County Park observed, "Campgrounds were nice and not too crowded. Lots of shade in the RV sites and seemingly everywhere (lots of trees)."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathroom facilities. At Kumeyaay Lake Campground, a camper noted, "There are clean bathrooms with flushable toilets and showers, and sinks to wash off things. The rangers even supplied Dr. Bronners Castile soap in each bathroom."

Wildlife viewing: The area hosts diverse wildlife including wild turkeys. A recent visitor to Lake Morena County Park shared, "There must have been 100 wild turkeys that cruised thru the camp ground a few times. Pretty epic sight!!"

Quiet camping experience: Several campgrounds offer peaceful settings despite their proximity to San Diego. A camper at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park remarked, "This campground has a nice feel. It is a good place to unwind and enjoy a campfire and the whole camping experience. Good place for kids."

What you should know

Variable road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds require careful navigation. At Thousand Trails Pio Pico, a camper advised, "It's a 10 mile drive to Chula Vista for services. It was made clear before our stay that there was little to no cell service."

Water restrictions: Some campgrounds have water quality notices. A Lake Morena visitor mentioned, "Very well maintained. Bathroom clean. Lots of staff onsite. Very helpful. Had a water boil order but took the Brita so no problem."

Insect activity: Depending on season, flying insects can be abundant. According to a visitor at Potrero County Park, "I will say there were a LOT of flies and bees, but not much you can do about that."

Reservation systems: The best places to camp near Dulzura require advance planning. A camper at Thousand Trails Pio Pico explained, "We were under the impression that the entire campground had full hook ups. Only the south side has full sewer, water, and electric hook ups. To get a spot on the south side, you have to go through a complicated first come first serve/wait for people to leave/list/lottery/nonsense."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer play areas for children. A visitor to Lake Morena noted, "Very long walk from the actual campground to the lake. Very nice playground at the lake."

Pool facilities: Some campgrounds have swimming pools for summer heat relief. A camper at Thousand Trails Pio Pico shared, "Since you're in the desert, having pools to cool off in was something I appreciated the longer I was in the heat."

Group accommodations: Several campgrounds can handle larger family gatherings. A visitor at Potrero County Park mentioned, "Birthday party. We had an amazing time and plenty of space for tents. More than about six cars is extra cost but very cheap sites."

Entertainment options: Many campgrounds provide activities beyond hiking. At San Diego Metro KOA, a camper reported, "This location has the most amenities we've encountered at a campsite. It even has electric tent hookups for the technology inclined!"

Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV sites vary significantly in quality and features across the region. A visitor to Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay advised, "Elite Full Hookup RV Site includes your very own gas fire BBQ grill, gas camp fire, 4 Adirondack chairs, dinner table with 6 chairs, full hookups including cable tv."

Leveling requirements: Some campgrounds have uneven sites. A Lake Jennings visitor noted, "Some sites need much leveling. I know which site to reserve next time!!"

Hookup variability: Electric, water, and sewer connections differ between campgrounds and even within the same facility. At Sweetwater Summit Regional Park, a camper explained, "There are about 60 camping spaces, mostly partial hook-ups (electricity and water) and a few full hook-ups (electricity, water, and sewer) in the original campground."

Site privacy: RV sites offer varying degrees of separation. At Lake Jennings, one camper advised, "Our particular site even had useful shrubbery on each side to create a quasi sense of privacy between sites."
