    Pineknot

Pineknot Campground, Big Bear Lake, Ca

A bit challenging to locate via Google Maps... Just go up (south) Summit Blvd, when you get to the parking lot of the ski resort, veer towards the left, and just past a concrete wall, you'll see the little Pineknot Campground sign attached to an aluminium pole. The campground is very cozy, countless tall pine trees, clean bathrooms, clean sites, water from taps, no hookups, and not for big rigs. The hosts are friendly, but strict! No generators from 8 pm to 8 am, a $3000 fine if your campfire is left unattended, and no rowdy obnoxious behavior is tolerated! We appreciated the rules, and thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful, quiet, deep in the woods getaway!!

    Barstow-Calico KOA

    Beautiful desert site

I had to change my reservation three times, and the staff was incredibly helpful. They went above and beyond to give us the easiest possible stay. The campground itself was reasonably clean with a gorgeous view of the desert and mountains. Sites laid out well and most are pull through and accommodate big rigs. Pool, laundry, general store, showers and lavatories. They did not however have the shuttle to the silver mine as advertised (ended with Covid) and the Enterprise rental in Barstow does not “pick you up“ and were rude besides.

    Shady Lane RV Camp

    A Handy Desert Stop

Traveling while pulling my utility trailer along makes slow going. And pulling up a long, long, long desert mountain grade can be downright exhausting.

So this is a mighty grateful thumbs up review. Robert made my day when I phoned up in the late afternoon and offered me a limited use rate on one their full hookup sites.

And of course, I got in real late, just after late closing hours–10 pm!

I got the last pull through site at the end of the lane. It was a breeze to pull in, get my deep cycle battery charging. 30 Amp with an adapter is all I need.

Shady Lane is mostly populated by real big rigs. So a 50amp socket is also on the post.

The park is a little distance from the highway, so it's blessedly quiet overall. After a grueling pull from Las Vegas, it was a wonderful blessing to crawl into my tent with my feline road companion, Missy. She just loves tent camping the very best. It was down in the 40s last night, but our traveling bed is a cushy cloud ☁️ from Heaven 🌠🌌✨ Just me and Missy and all those stars on that dark desert night.

Just woke to a lovely quiet morning here at Shady Lane. Fully renewed, to make my long drive down towards San Diego.

Looks they offer all the basics, showers, laumdry, and the same wifi network is offered all over these desert parts.. So once signed up, its the same login wherever you go on this network.. That's handy. Great wifi signal all the way down at the end of the lane, too.

Most importantly, Shady Lane offers tent spots and doesn't get snooty about whether you're pulling a utility trailer, or a spit shined mega-rig. On the phone, when I spoke with Robert, told him what I'm pulling along, he was as nice as can be.

I'm glad I found this quiet little desert overnighter. 🏜 Just right for Missy and me.

    Shady Lane RV Camp

    Not what the picture shows.

The units were spaced tightly together with a gravel pad and concrete patio. It was $45 but with GoodSam down to $40.50. Old park. Friendly staff. Bathrooms and showers aged but clean. I was told there was cable TV but didn't try it. The pet area was a sandy strip by the fence.

    Lighthouse Trailer Resort & Marina

    Good stay

Little family owned RV spot— some long termers. Everyone super nice. Big spot, shade of trees, walk down to lake. Full hookup. 7 minutes to big bear lake town. Hiking trails out front gate. Probably not big rig friendly.

    Sawtooth Canyon Campground

    Great, and free

This is a great BLM campground, FREE, individual sites with varying levels of privacy and levelness, no reservations. Each site has a shade structure, table, fire pit, and grill. There are pit toilets but no other amenities. No water and no trash service- please pack your trash out! We had to pick up after some other campers which is just so dumb to have to do. There was a camper there who looked like they had set up for long term residency, and the sheriff came by and kicked them out.

This is also a big rock climbing destination so you’ll have climbers coming in for the day as well. There are some “dispersed” type sites in the brush area so if you show up and all the spots are taken, you can sleep in one of those spots in a pinch until morning. We were there in late December and there were only a couple of other campers, and then again in early January and it was busy on weekends but quiets down during the week.

The road coming in is 1.6 miles of washboard and some big dips, but it’s doable. Cell service is very spotty throughout the campground. Parts of decent ATT or Verizon service, and parts have zero. Lots of hikes and trails and places to walk and scramble.

    Barstow-Calico KOA

    Great Waypoint for Passing Through

It's an excellent location for access to Barstow and Calico. We appreciated the pool, hammocks next to the pool, and the treats at the store. Sites are primarily pull-throughs, and many are occupied by people passing through them for one night. There are easy hookups, 50 amp service, and easy on/off from the highway. We visited both Barstow and Calico and had a good time at both.

    Barstow-Calico KOA

    Barstow KOA

We needed a place to stay for our last 2 nights on the road before going home after the place we reserved was not a good fit for our 40 ft Allegro Bus. We called and they had a perfect spot for us for the 2 days. It's clean and quiet here and right off the freeway. We couldn't hear the freeway from our RV. We were so glad we found the KOA. Pull throughs that fit our 40ft plus tow. There's gravel but flat so leveling isn't difficult with the blocks. Plenty of room, some spots with trees and some bushes. Our 4 slide outs fit with no problem.

    Arabian RV Oasis

A place to stay if you must.

Full hookups, concrete pads, picnic tables. Many full time campers parked with junk around them. The grounds need a ton of cleanup. Not the safest feeling being in this park.

Guide to Calico

Private campgrounds near Calico, California offer varied accommodations for recreational vehicles in the high desert region at elevations around 2,000 feet. The climate features extreme temperature variations with winter lows frequently dropping below freezing and summer highs regularly exceeding 100°F. Desert camping presents unique challenges with limited natural shade and seasonal wind conditions that can impact outdoor activities.

What to do

Explore historic attractions: Near Newberry Mountain RV Park, visitors can experience Route 66 landmarks. "The old caboose, the Hwy 66 hotel mural, and the ducks around the pond were a nice touch," notes one camper who found the park "super easy to find as it was right off I-40 on old Route 66."

Visit nearby waterways: Despite the desert setting, some campgrounds offer water recreation. At Holloway's Marina & RV Park in Big Bear Lake, campers can rent boats directly from the marina. "We rented a boat on Saturday and was great just to walk out on the dock with the kids. 4 hr rental was just enough. Make reservations for they sell out on the weekends."

Enjoy swimming pools: Several RV parks near Calico offer pools for heat relief. At Newberry Mountain RV Park, one visitor reported, "The best part for me was the pool which was clean and cool," which proved particularly valuable given that "it was 120° when I got there so the pool felt really good."

What campers like

Peaceful desert nights: The Mojave Desert's night sky and cooling temperatures are highlights for many visitors. A camper at Shady Lane RV Camp shared, "Just woke to a lovely quiet morning here at Shady Lane. Fully renewed, to make my long drive down towards San Diego."

Friendly management: Personal attention at smaller parks stands out in reviews. At Shady Lane RV Camp, "You are greeted by staff and escorted to your space. Staff will assist you in plugging in if needed. They ask that you check-in after you are settled," according to one satisfied guest.

Convenient highway access: The strategic location near major thoroughfares appeals to travelers. A visitor mentioned that Newberry Mountain RV Park is "A nice enough place to stop right off of I 40 and old route 66. Gravel pads they were level no problems with the hook ups."

What you should know

Military-only facilities: Several RV parks near Calico are restricted to military personnel. At Military Park Barstow Marine Corps Logistics Base Oasis RV Park, "A previous reviewer noted this is a military only facility. That is correct. I.D. is required to get on base." Another visitor confirmed, "Note that this area is an active military installation and reserved for armed services members and their families only!"

Variable facility quality: Maintenance standards differ significantly between parks. At Arabian RV Oasis, a camper noted, "Plumbing is pvc pipes and they Break easy, bathroom run down and dirty, Wi-Fi does not work," while others reported "Level sites, electric (30 used) water and sewer."

Limited dump station access: Not all parks offer public dump stations. One traveler reported, "We stopped here to use their dump and fill our water tanks, and were directed to the Flying J south of town. The staff person told me that all the RV parks in this area operate this way."

Tips for camping with families

Look for waterfront sites: Lakeside accommodations provide built-in entertainment. At Holloway's Marina & RV Park, a visitor with a family shared, "We have a 265bh transcend and parked it in a site on the water. Great views and enjoyed watching the fish jump in the evenings."

Check for age restrictions: Some resorts have limitations on RV age or size. At Big Bear Shores RV Resort, "Make sure your unit is long enough and not too old or they will turn you away," cautions one reviewer who noted the park's strict policies.

Consider seasonal temperature extremes: Desert camping requires preparation for weather conditions. A camper at Newberry Mountain RV Park stayed "for four nights and actually enjoyed it in spite of the heat during the afternoon hours... The nights were fantastic!!"

Tips from RVers

Check hookup heights: Unusual sewer connection heights can complicate dumping. One RVer at Shady Lane RV Camp noted, "It was difficult to use the dump hookups as they're elevated about a foot off the ground so I had to lift the hose off my support snake many times."

Verify site size compatibility: Many RV parks near Calico have tight spacing between units. A camper at Holloway's Marina mentioned, "The sight was a little small but made it work. Had to hang the rear of the trailer over the river bank about 8'. Not a big deal but took the rear stabilizer out of play for the weekend."

Plan for mountain driving: Access to some RV parks involves challenging terrain. An RVer warned about Holloway's Marina: "Make sure you take the back way up the mountain. It's no joke pulling a trailer up there."
