Lake Ouachita's primitive camping areas around Story welcome pets while providing access to swimming spots and hiking trails. Washita Primitive Camping Area features tent and RV sites with picnic tables, fire pits, and pet-friendly policies throughout the campground. Sites located along the water allow campers to swim with their dogs directly from the campsite. Several campgrounds in the area, including Tompkins Bend and COE Lake Ouachita Little Fir Campground, offer electric and water hookups for RVs with pets. The campground toilets are generally well-maintained, though some primitive sites have only basic pit toilets that can be neglected during peak seasons.

Hiking trails around Lake Ouachita provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail system accessible from several pet-friendly campgrounds. Many campsites are positioned on peninsulas with water on both sides, creating natural boundaries for pets while still allowing freedom to explore. The remote nature of many campgrounds means campers should bring all necessary pet supplies, as the nearest stores are considerable distances away. Wildlife sightings are common in the area, including deer grazing near playgrounds and bald eagles flying overhead, so keeping dogs leashed is advisable for their safety. Corps of Engineers parks throughout the region maintain consistent pet policies, requiring leashes and proper waste disposal while providing spacious, lakeside sites that accommodate both tents and RVs.

      Catherine's Landing

      Very Nice, Lots of Amenities

Catherine’s Landing is a great RV park with lots of amenities and things happening. This park is an RVC Outdoor Destination property which is known for their “resort” amenities. The park is set on 400 acres with one mile bordering Lake Catherine and about eight or nine miles from downtown Hot Springs.

All roads, sites and patios are paved and this is definitely a big rig-friendly park. Every site has water, 50/30 amp, sewer, cable, and wifi. Fire pits and picnic tables accompany all sites. There are a variety of sites ranging from waterfront back-in, pull-thrus, or interior back-in. Waterfront sites have a nice view of the lake from the back of the site and access for fishing. The park also has yurts and cottages (some of which are pet-friendly). Adjacent to the yurts is a nice, large covered picnic area with grills, a dish washing station.

Lots and lots of amenities here. Hiking trails, swimming pool, fitness center, lounge, playground, dog park, zip-line, boat rental, boat launch, store, and disc golf. Some amenities (boat rentals and zip-line) are an extra charge.

Hot Springs is a nice little town nestled in the Ouachita Mountains with interesting history and natural beauty. We found plenty to do from hiking the National Park to learning about the bathhouse history to discovering the gangster influence. We spent four nights and could have stayed longer with all that the town offers. Most people come here to bathe in the soothing warm mineral waters but there is also a horse racetrack, science museum, off road track, water/theme park, alligator farm, and a few museums. Hot Springs National Park has miles and miles of great hiking trails and a great place to spend an afternoon. The town of Hot Springs is very dog-friendly and we found many places that would allow them in and on the patio for lunch.

      Pros:

      • Very nice, clean, well-manicured
      • Lots of amenities
      •  Paved level sites with paved patios
      • The dog park was a decent size for running and mingling with other dogs
      • The hiking trail(about 3 miles) was a big plus and got used a lot.

      Cons:

      • Price. We booked late and didn’t have too many sites to choose from we had to pay for a waterfront site

      Catherine's Landing

Great campground on Lake Catherine and close to Hot Springs

Top notch RV campground that is well maintained and has a friendly professional staff. Lots of amenities like disc golf, hiking trails, pool, zip line course, lake access and two dog parks that were the cleanest I’ve seen at an rv park. We had site 204 which is a back in site with FHU on driver’s side. We loved this site because it was on the back side of the campground, near the dog park and lots of open space behind us to play with our dog. All of the sites are very spacious, concrete pads, well maintained hook ups, and most are full sun. This was our second visit and we will definitely be back.

      Hot Springs National Park KOA

      Enjoyable maiden voyage

I have little to go off of, but this is a very clean, safe feeling place. Close to the national park, friendly employees and guests, several mini trails and a dog park.

      J and J RV Park

      Very Nice, Quiet Place

This park was very peaceful and quiet. You can hear the bullfrogs at night. JJ - the owner was the ice on the cake. Just such a nice fellow. There are several full timers there. It is right on a little creek, and there are turkeys somewhere nearby. The RV Park is very very close to Hot Springs National Park, and there is an amusement park right across the highway. The Wi-Fi is nonexistent. There is no dog park, but plenty of space to walk your fur children. We enjoyed the full hook ups. Nice big pull thru sites. There is a laundry room and bathrooms on the premises. I had an enjoyable experience, and would gladly stay there again if I am ever nearby.

      Treasure Isle R.V. Park

      Nice park

Nice, quiet park. Laundry facilities nice and clean. Clean showers. Nice dog park. Management friendly. On lake, so some boat noise. The cons were poor local TV satellite

service and no WiFi for monthly stays. Would stay here again.

      Royal Berry Farm

      Quiet, clean, solitary

This was a great spot. The host responded quickly via email and we never saw another soul. The property is massive and you can let your pets off the leash. This was the first time we let our cats roam untethered and they loved it. Water and electricity provided, clear sky for starlink, and a fire pit. There were tons of flies though. No mosquitos that we could tell so thats a plus. Great quiet spot

      Catherine's Landing

      Relax in the clean air

My husband and I camped 3 nights with the dogs an a travel trailer. The check in process was very easy and the facilities were immaculate. Concrete pads and sites were well kept. The yurts on property looked very big and clean so maybe we will do that next. The boat ramp and docks were safe for fishing. The dog park was small but sufficient for them to run a bit off the leash. Firewood was a bit pricey$$. Overall tho, super place.

    Guide to Story

Crystal clear waters and forested peninsulas characterize Lake Ouachita camping areas near Story, Arkansas. The lake spans over 40,000 acres with 975 miles of shoreline featuring multiple Corps of Engineers campgrounds. Water temperatures remain comfortable from late spring through early fall, with summer highs averaging 90°F and overnight lows around 70°F.

    What to do

Swimming in crystal clear water: Lake Ouachita's pristine water offers excellent swimming opportunities throughout the summer. At Crystal Springs Campground, campers enjoy convenient water access. "The first thing you notice when you come here is the clear lake that is a short walk away from the campsite. The sites are pretty big and has a shelter because it rains pretty often here," notes Jasmine L.

Crystal mining excursions: Many campers visit nearby mines to hunt for quartz crystals. "Went crystal digging at Coleman which was also unbelievable. Will definitely go back when half the US is underwater!" shares Ber M., who stayed at Crystal Springs Campground.

Mountain biking on scenic trails: The Lake Ouachita Vista Trail system connects several campgrounds. Vanessa M. reports from Tompkins Bend: "This is a relatively large campground, appropriate for RV and tent camping. The campground is nicely situated near the end of the LOViT cross country MTB/hiking trail."

Bird watching for eagles and waterfowl: Bald eagle sightings are common in winter months. According to Thomas W., "We saw eagles every day and fishing was great" at Crystal Springs Campground.

    What campers like

Secluded tent sites on peninsulas: Many tent campers appreciate the privacy of walk-in sites on small peninsulas. Erika R. describes Washita Primitive Camping Area: "Basically sites t01-t11 are on a small peninsula with the lake on both sides. You can go swimming in the lake right off the back of your campsite."

Cold creek swimming for hot days: Cooler water temperatures in the creeks provide relief during summer heat. Mike A. from Charlton Campground says, "Walnut Creek is always cold, the swimming is great! Most of the campsites are roomy, and the camp is well maintained."

Historic CCC structures: Some campgrounds feature historic Civilian Conservation Corps architecture. "I love Civilian Conservation Corps architecture and construction and this place has it! There's a beautiful CCC dam that forms a beautiful swimming area," reports Cheri H. about Charlton Campground.

Free camping with lake views: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate free camping options. Sara W. notes about Hickory Nut Mountain: "This is a gorgeous spot, the view is amazing. There is a fire ring, picnic table, grill and it's free."

    What you should know

Limited cell service in remote areas: Cell coverage varies significantly around the lake. At Denby Point, Lorand D. reports: "Phone service was OK on AT&T, Sprint was 'roaming' and pretty slow."

Stock up on supplies before arrival: Many campgrounds are far from stores. Cheri H. advises about Little Fir Campground: "Very remote so make sure you have everything you need before you get out there because there aren't any stores even convenience stores or gas stations nearby."

Weather preparedness is essential: Quick weather changes can affect camping conditions. Megan B. notes about Tompkins Bend: "It was quite cool and the breeze off the lake made it feel even colder, so be prepared for that."

Wildlife encounters are common: Wildlife sightings require proper food storage. "We saw several deer grazing near playgrounds and bald eagles flying overhead," reports Kelli P. from Tompkins Bend.

    Tips for camping with families

Accessible playgrounds for children: Some campgrounds offer playground facilities for families. Travis A. mentions that Crystal Springs Campground has a "nice lake with beach area. Playground for kids. Clean restrooms."

Walk-in tent areas for family privacy: Families seeking more privacy should consider walk-in tent areas. At Lake Ouachita State Park Campground, Taylor C. shares: "We got the prime spot for tent camping. It was a haul to get all our gear to the end but they have carts available to help."

Pet friendly policies with varied terrain: Dogs enjoy the varied terrain around many campsites. Cara T. from Joplin Campground notes: "Such a dreamy spot on the lake. My dogs enjoyed it just as much as I did."

Youth ranger programs available: Educational opportunities exist for children during peak season. Josh H. shares about Lake Ouachita State Park Campground: "The rangers were great and offered a variety of informational classes and hikes."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many lakeside sites require leveling equipment. Lynn W. advises about Denby Point: "I took off one star because this site, while located right on the water, is very unlevel. Also, the pad is narrow and higher than the surrounding ground."

Electric hookup options: Most Corps of Engineers parks offer electrical hookups. Don L. from Denby Point reports: "Our site had 50, 30 and 20 amp electric as well as a frost hydrant with decent water pressure."

Boat parking considerations: Sites often accommodate boats, but space varies. David W. notes about Denby Point: "We had a beautiful lakeview campsite in this well laid out COE park, number 46. It was one of the most difficult sites to back in we have ever had."

Winter camping availability: Several pet friendly camping areas near Story, Arkansas remain open year-round with reduced services. Paul Y. from Tompkins Bend shares: "Well maintained, clean (including restrooms and showers), and lots of sites with great lake views."
