Lake Ouachita offers premium glamping close to Mountain Pine, Arkansas amid the forested peninsulas of Arkansas's largest lake. The area features 40,000 acres of clear water with more than 200 islands scattered throughout its expanse. Winter temperatures average 30-50°F while summer days typically reach 85-95°F with high humidity.
What to do
Kayak the ragged shorelines: At Lake Ouachita State Park Campground, visitors can explore the lake's unique geography. "The lake is beautiful with very ragged edges and islands so there is a lot to explore by boat, plus two or three hiking trails that take you to a lovely overlook," notes Lynn G.
Mine for crystals: Just 15 minutes from Mountain Pine, Crystal Ridge RV Park offers access to nearby crystal mines. "For $20 you can go spend the day diggin through dirt and finding crystals. I don't think everyone has the luck we had but we came after a rain and cleaned up. Hundred bucks in gems," shares Justin M.
Fish from the bank: Stephens Park Campground provides access to both the lake and river for fishing. "The river is beautiful with clear, cold water. Campsite 3 is right on the river. Sites are full hookup. There is a day use area with access to be able to fish from the bank," reports Shana D.
Play disc golf: For those seeking luxury glamping near Mountain Pine, Catherine's Landing offers recreational options beyond water activities. "Gorgeous setting on pristine Lake Catherine close to historic Hot Springs. The pool and adjacent waterfall are 5 star resort level. The climbing and ropes course is enormous," remarks Taylor D.
What campers like
Private tent areas: For those who prefer traditional camping over glamping options near Mountain Pine, Hot Springs National Park KOA offers both. "Areas C and D are in the woods. Most of the sites in these areas are on the small size but should easily accommodate a truck camper and smaller. Not all sites are level," explains Fred S.
Lakefront sites: Brady Mountain - Lake Ouachita provides prime lake views. "We really liked this place, even though we picked the 'wrong' campsite. Our site was spacious & level, I just wish I selected one on the upper loop- the views are nicer as well as the breeze," shares Bob M.
Waterfall access: The natural features draw many visitors to upscale outdoor accommodations. "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lake Ouachita State Park! We stayed in space 55 and had a great view of the lake and the beautiful sunsets. Our friends stayed in space 1. It was more shady but didn't have a view of the lake," reports Brenda A.
Dog amenities: Catherine's Landing gets praise for pet accommodations. "We camped 3 nights with the dogs an a travel trailer. The check in process was very easy and the facilities were immaculate. Concrete pads and sites were well kept. The dog park was small but sufficient for them to run a bit off the leash," says Wendy P.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Due to popularity, booking early is essential. "Stays booked 93% of the year. It's really hard to get a reservation if you don't book at least a year out in A loop," advises Ryan S. about Petit Jean State Park.
Site preferences: Many campgrounds have significant differences between loops. "We stayed in A35 which is a triple A site with level site with all the trimmings! Wooded campsite with adequate shade, picnic table, fire pit and raised grilling station," shares Don L.
Seasonal considerations: Some sites have limited shade. "The only reason I didn't give a 5 is the partying kids across from us. They partied hard cussing and loud music until 3 am two nights in a row," notes Tiffany H. about late spring crowds.
Cell service variations: Coverage can be spotty. "The cell service was minimal (1 bar) but a cell booster gave us full service. Very clean park!" advises Brenda A. about reception in the area.
Tips for camping with families
Walking distance amenities: Lake Catherine State Park Campground offers convenient access to water and trails. "We took my nieces on a weekend trip in our camper to Lake Catherine State Park. Our campsite backed up to the lake, so we had a great view. The campsite was a great size and well spaced out from our neighbors," shares Alison C.
Swimming options: Natural water access varies by location. "The lake was gorgeous! I wish we had more time to walk trails, but we were just stopping for the night. My only complaint is that the campground was crowded and the spots were all very close together," notes Hannah L.
Kid-friendly activities: Many parks offer specific children's amenities. "Kid friendly. Great upkeep and sites that are easily accessible. Playground, splash pad, and pool. We were not able to access the pool because of the time of year, but we will definitely be back in warmer weather," reports Bridget C.
Educational opportunities: Ranger programs available at most state parks. "This is one of the nicest parks. RV camping with all hook ups available and right on the lake with very scenic hiking. The entire park was very clean," shares Billy.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Many sites require adjustment equipment. "Depending on where you are in the park you can see the Ouachita mountains in the horizon. The camping areas and restrooms/showers were very clean," reports Tina B. about DeGray Lake Resort State Park.
Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when booking. "Many sites are unlevel and require significant leveling chocks to get it truly level. Some sites have water and the picnic table on the opposite sides of the camper. It's purely inconvenient and I'm not sure why this is this way," warns Ryan S.
Dump station access: Not all sites have sewer connections. "We only stayed here one night on our way home, so we didn't really get to use everything at our disposal. The sites are close to each other, but they are stair stepped, so you feel like you have more privacy which was really nice," mentions Chris H.
Site spacing considerations: Some loops offer more privacy than others. "A paradise for everyone! The property is so peaceful and quiet. Next time I will choose site 286-288 to have the perfect access and view of this play spot," recommends Lauren N.
