Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Thatcher, AZ

Gila Campground at Roper Lake State Park offers pet-friendly accommodations in cabins, tent sites, and RV spaces with clean facilities. Dogs are welcome throughout the campground with standard leash requirements in effect. Immaculately maintained restrooms and shower facilities provide convenience for campers with pets. Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping provides a free alternative for pet owners seeking more remote camping experiences, with wide-open spaces that accommodate multiple dogs. The facilities are extremely clean, making it comfortable for extended stays with pets. Both locations maintain quiet environments allowing pets to relax without excessive noise disturbances.

Round the Mountain Campground provides three pet-friendly sites with bear boxes, picnic tables and fire rings near a crystal-clear creek suitable for dogs to cool off. Sites are situated on the mountain with enough distance between campers to prevent pet conflicts. The road access requires careful driving with pets in vehicles, as the switchbacks can be challenging. Safford's pet supply stores and veterinary services are approximately 20 minutes north of the mountain campgrounds, making it convenient for emergency pet needs. Arcadia Campground's shaded sites under tall ponderosa pines create comfortable temperatures for pets during hot summer months, with temperatures often 30 degrees cooler than surrounding desert areas. Wildlife sightings are common, so keeping dogs leashed is essential for their safety and the protection of local fauna.

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Desert Terrain with Moutain View

There is plenty to do at Roper Lake. Great spots for RVs, tents, and cabins too. This is a popular area so get your reservations in early. The lake was low in December and it was windy and cold, but we made the best of it and enjoyed the views of snow capped Mt. Graham. Campground was clean and very dog friendly. They have a dog park. The have a junior ranger program... fun for the little ones! We did notice that many weren’t following covid protocol in bathrooms and around the campsite. But we had no problem social distancing and keeping to ourselves, even with our loop completely full. We felt safe and comfortable. Your stay also includes access to Dankworth Pond State Park, a 10 min drive down the road. The pond is small, but you’ll catch more fish here. There are also great educational hiking paths with information & replicas of tribal villages. Worth the drive!

    Alaskan RV Park

Take a trip down Music Road for a great stay!

Alaskan RV Park is conveniently located off of I-10 at Exit 366 near Bowie. The park features affordable RV sites at $20/night. The sites are all spacious pull-throughs. There is a dump station on site($10), and water refill available (based on tank size, but not more than $20). The park is handicap accessible and pet friendly. No breed restrictions. Tenting is also available. There are showers and laundry available. Alaskan RV Park is Bowie's best kept secret as it was the site of the Sideman Jamboree each year and featured music from country stars. The park hopes to bring music back to the stage in the future.

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Quiet, well maintained state park

This is our second time staying here and they have started doing some upgrades to the park. New dump station and some new bathrooms and shower houses. We stayed in the Hacienda loop both times. I like this loop better because it doesn’t seem as crowded as the other loops. Sites are well spaced and level. Nice hiking trails around the lake also where you can fish. Very close to Safford and Thatcher that have a great number of stores.

    Alaskan RV Park

    Sweet little park

We really liked this simple little RV park. Friendly and has character, even though it's like many other RV parks with the large gravel lot.   Nice backdrop of the mountains.  We liked the music vibe of the place, and that it is such a laid back and welcoming place.

Right off highway 10 so you get the road noise. Park has large gravel/dirt sites with hook ups.

Rate is $20/night with laundry, showers and bathrooms.

Pet friendly. Staff friendly as well.

    Alaskan RV Park

    One night

Thought about staying on BLM Land but temp was predicted for 28. Discovered this little gem for 20.00 with electric! Such a friendly group of people. I considered I-10 as my “white noise “ and did not bother me. Good Verizon signal and clean restroom. Pet Friendly. Quail crossing in the campground!

    Grande Vista RV Park

    It’s an option

Selected this RV park for the following reasons: Passport America discount, not along the railroad, I-10 or in the desert. It’s small and funky, weedy with, to our Bull terrier’s delight, many cats. They are dog-friendly and not too impressed with themselves like the more upscale and expensive RV parks are. $18 per night with full hookups. We’ve been boondocking out at Roosevelt lake for 2 weeks and this was convenient for laundry etc. Would stop here again for an overnighter with the 50% PA discount.

Round Mountain Rockhound Area - Dispersed

Difficult to access but great rocks!

So if you are into rocks this really is a great place to check out. Be prepared as the drive in is difficult and long. Larger RVs are not recommended as the road has many steep washouts and ruts. The main dirt road leading into the area has bad washboard bumps. There is also an active cattle ranch in the area so be careful with any pets. You’ll find a logbook on the way in. Once there you’ll find plenty of places to park but don’t count on it being level. There are also lots of sharp rocks so watch your tires. There are no facilities here. The views are amazing especially at night. The wind never did stop. You got to really like rocks!

    Grande Vista RV Park

Who knew internet speeds would be the fastest I've ever seen

I have Verizon and management stated Verizon is the best in this small town and look at my screen shot, it's no joke. He said all other carriers suck.

This is on top of their 2 free wifi access they provide which are already fast! So if you need to get work done and reliant on good internet speeds, you've found the spot.

Place is a mix of mobile homes and RV park. Each site has their own picnic table and FHU. Water spigot is on the ground, not elevated. Laundry, showers, rec room (pool table, full kitchen, DVDs, books) and BBQ grill are included. Cats roaming everywhere. Fairly flat gravel parking. Management had to put me in a 50 amp site (#9) because their 30 amp sites were full at no extra charge. He even let me borrow the 50/30 amp converter as I didn't have one. Management lives in a mobile home near office and it was nice as he is available after regular hours.

Quiet place overall. If you come on trash day (Tuesday), you might get woken up by it if you're in our site as it's next to the alley.

As stated, very small town. We had dinner at Isabella's South Of The Border. Food wasn't as great as the reviews but decent for the area. Fun tip: Isabella is the wife of the owner of The Big Tex BBQ.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Awesome for RV Camping, Tent not so much

Everyone was super kind and sweet, restrooms/laundry center were very clean and well maintained. Tent camping spots are in front of the park, where the truck wash across the street can be heard prevalently. Cats everywhere are cute and sweet but I’m pretty sure they use the tent spots as their litter box.

Guide to Thatcher

Dispersed camping sites near Thatcher, Arizona sit at elevations ranging from 3,200 to 9,000 feet, offering dramatic temperature differences from the desert floor. The Pinaleño Mountains provide a 30-degree temperature drop during summer months compared to Safford valley temperatures. Camping access varies seasonally with higher elevation sites typically closed during winter months.

What to do

Fishing at mountain lakes: Riggs Flat Lake offers a productive fishing spot for beginners and families. According to one visitor at Riggs Flat Campground: "The fishing is great for beginners and kids, not hard at all and the entire lake is easily accessible."

Wildlife observation: With careful attention to safety guidelines, campers can observe diverse wildlife across different elevations. A camper at Arcadia Campground noted: "A deer came through. Good jump off point to go to Riggs Flat lake, use the kayak. Next time we'll bring fishing rods."

Mountain biking: The Swift Trail (AZ 366) provides challenging routes for cyclists climbing from desert to alpine zones. "Saw many road cyclists riding up the very steep, winding road, as it is lightly traveled," reports a visitor at Round the Mountain Campground.

Spring wildflower viewing: Lower elevation BLM lands showcase desert blooms during spring months. One camper described the scene at Tanque Road: "Wildflowers at their peak, a full on superbloom of California poppies amidst cacti greeted us at this BLM spot just southeast of Mt. Graham."

What campers like

Temperature relief: The significant elevation change provides natural cooling during hot months. At Arcadia Campground, a reviewer appreciated: "We loved the shaded campsites and quiet atmosphere. The campground is close to the road, but still feels deep in the forest."

Clear night skies: Limited light pollution allows for excellent stargazing opportunities. A camper at Tanque Road Dispersed Camping shared: "Wide open spaces, beautiful at dawn & dusk! Very little traffic. Decent Verizon & AT&T cell service."

Mountain stream access: Several campgrounds feature natural water features. At Marijilda, a camper reported: "Not much for camping area, but it's right on the creek and secluded and quiet. No toilets. No trash. Verizon in and out. 4x4 needed to exit."

Year-round accessibility options: While mountain sites have seasonal closures, desert dispersed camping remains available throughout winter. A winter camper at Haekel Rd noted: "Spent two nights here at the exact place where Google Maps says you have arrived. Very secluded and quiet! Our site was pretty much a gravelly level area. We were just above the dam."

What you should know

Road conditions vary dramatically: Mountain access requires careful planning and appropriate vehicles. A reviewer at Round the Mountain Campground warned: "This tiny little campground is perched on the side of the road in another of AZ's Sky Islands. Just 3 campsites, not big enough for large RV's, though Hamlet-sized trailers and camper vans are fine."

Water availability is limited: Most dispersed sites have no water sources. At Tanque Road, campers must "Come prepared with drinking water and please Leave No Trace."

Bear safety protocols: At higher elevations, proper food storage is mandatory. Round the Mountain Campground provides "a picnic table, fire ring, and bear box" at each site.

Weather varies by season and elevation: Temperature swings can be significant. An Upper Arcadia camper noted: "Summer days (May through August at least) seem to be quite warm between I'd say 85-90+ degrees. However it really cools down around 5:30 or 6pm. Nights can be chilly getting into the upper 50s to low 60s."

Tips for camping with families

Choose established campgrounds for amenities: Families benefit from facilities at developed sites. A visitor to Gila Campground — Roper Lake State Park shared: "For starters the staff here is very friendly. The facilities are immaculately clean. I mean the cleanest campground restrooms I've ever seen. We stayed in a cabin and it was nice and quiet."

Bring filtering equipment for creek water: Natural water sources require treatment. One camper at Round the Mountain noted: "A beautiful creek down the hill from the campground had crystal clear water for filtering and washing up."

Pack for temperature fluctuations: Mountain elevations require layered clothing. At Riggs Flat: "The campsite its self is clean and well maintained. The bathrooms were the cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen. The camp host, Troy, was a nice guy happy to chat or give hiking suggestions."

Plan for pet-friendly activities: Many campgrounds welcome pets with proper leashing. At Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping, one camper appreciated the "Wide open area, gravel road to access camping areas. No designated sites but plenty of flat open areas to stop."

Tips from RVers

Size restrictions apply on mountain roads: Large rigs should stay at lower elevations. A visitor to Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping noted: "Nice Spot. Easy to find, and easy to find a spot. Big Rig friendly in the 1st area. Gets a little tighter the further down you go like most places."

Dump station locations: RVers should plan waste management carefully. A Haekel Rd camper shared: "Free dump station at the Water Reclamation Plant in Safford, just sign in, dump, sign out. They also have water to rinse, not potable."

Cell service varies by location: Remote workers should check connectivity options. At Tanque Road, campers report "Decent Verizon & AT&T cell service" while other mountain locations have limited or no service.

Pet-friendly site selection: When traveling with pets, choose appropriate areas. Pet friendly camping near Thatcher, Arizona includes sites like Haekel Rd where one camper noted: "We stayed in the 1st area for stronger internet & less fuel consumption when we go to town."
