Reservations are essential during peak seasons, particularly for waterfront sites at Lake Guntersville and Honeycomb Campground. Most state parks in the region maintain year-round operations, though summer brings higher temperatures and increased visitor traffic. Cell service varies significantly across the area, with Monte Sano offering limited Verizon coverage and WiFi near the camp store. As one camper noted, "The park has many trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as the North Alabama Japanese Garden." Fall brings spectacular foliage displays, making it a popular time for weekend camping. Many campgrounds feature security gates with access codes, providing additional safety for campers, particularly those traveling alone.

Wooded sites with ample shade characterize many campgrounds in the region, offering relief during hot summer months. According to a Monte Sano visitor, "Each campsite is well-spaced and the primitive tent camping area is away from the RVs." Facilities typically include clean bathhouses, laundry services, and camp stores selling essentials like firewood and ice. Hiking trails connect many campgrounds to natural features, with waterfalls being particularly common attractions. Lake Guntersville campsites offer fishing and boating opportunities, though some visitors mention the need to stock up on supplies before arrival as stores can be a considerable distance away. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with deer commonly seen at dusk in Monte Sano and other wooded campgrounds throughout the region.

    Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

    Great place for kids

We went to Guntersville State Park campground for our first camping trip and really enjoyed it. We went on Labor Day weekend so it was pretty full. Even though nearly every campsite was booked, there was plenty of room for kids to roam, ride bikes, and play. I was really surprised how quiet it was despite the number of people there. No noise issues (other than my own kids). We spent alot of time at the playground and also a morning on the beach area. We’ll definitely be back one day.

    Wills Creek RV Park

    Convenient location

This was an overnight stay on our way to the Smokies. Easy to get to from I-59 in Fort Payne. They have some sites that are shaded, but the pull through sites are in an open area. Gravel roads and pads (thankfully, as everything around was standing in water from the recent downpour)

The facility is dated, but clean and an easy on and off on the way through.

    Nightly rate was $45

    WiFi worked

Jay Landings Marina & RV Park

    Beautiful Sunsets

Absolutely beautiful place to stay with all the needed amenities plus extra! I felt very safe here every day while my husband was at work. They have a shower house, laundry room, several common areas to sit, docs, boat ramp, salt water pool & basketball hoop. But for the noise, this would be a five star place to stay. There is a scrap metal recycling plant beside the campground, a train not too far away (whistle blows at night 😫) and across the river is a nuclear power plant and a refinery. The grounds are very well kept with lovey landscaping, paved roads and level sites with crushed rock and grass. Jessica at the front desk was pleasant and easy to work with. I would absolutely stay here again.

    Northgate RV Travel Park

Nice place to JUST stay in your RV

Nice level gravel pull through sites. Full hook ups. Great water pressure. WiFi signal was very good ! Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and only one other RV was here. As explained in the description no bathhouse, pool or anything so just basic RVing. The only “complaints” were no fire pits for fires and is a little noisy from the highway traffic. Otherwise great pull thru full hookup RV park for the price.

    Cherokee Rock Village

    Rocks and Rigs

We attended North Alabama trails and recreation’s Rock and Rig event here. The park is beautiful with amazing views. We camped on the “brow” not in the rv parking area so I can’t speak to the camping spots or amenities for RVs, but the staff and facilities are nice.

    Monte Sano State Park Campground

    4.9 stars

Pretty spectacular all around. Sites are spaced well, wooded, and many have direct access to the trails. The trails! So many! We saw 4 waterfalls, including one inside a cave. A mountain bikers or hikers paradise here. It is in a beautiful area with nice homes and mountain views. The camp store is great and the two gates with code are a nice touch. There are cool little wooden play obstacles for the kids in the campground and a huge playground 1/2 mile away inside the park. The Japanese garden is very cool also. Wonderful overlooks to take in the surrounding area. Just a short drive down the mountain to great shops and restaurants. Just what a state park should be. Loved our site along the trail and ridge.

    Cherokee Rock Village

Safe place to spend the night

This park is an attraction to hikers and rock climbers according to the lady at the camp store. The views are absolutely spectacular! To register for the night you will need cash unless there's someone in the store. Best I can tell, there are more day visitors than campers. I stayed in the tent area, but there appeared to be quite a few places to park a small RV. I chose the tent area because it seemed a bit better for level parking. It was also closer to the restroom. Note there are lots of signs stating no parallel parking in the tent area, so I guess the way the space is laid out if you are towing a trailer you couldn't park there. The tent sites are scattered along half the loop through the park, but there are no specific sites with numbers. Instead there are lots of picnic tables and fire rings and it seems you just pick an open spot. Absent are any tent pads, so you just put out your tent under the trees. There is a restroom building that includes showers, but the showers are those single button things you have to keep pressing. The restroom was reasonably clean given there were a few groups of kids there during the day. Overall this is a pretty good place to camp for the night. The staff was friendly and the park well maintained. I slept in my truck quite comfortably and had a peaceful night. It's June as I visit, and the full rate is $19 to camp. They gave me a senior discount.
