CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks are scattered throughout the Birmingham area offering varying levels of amenities for motorhome travelers. Hoover Met Complex RV Park provides full hookup pull-through sites on level concrete pads with 50-amp electric service and good WiFi connectivity. "It is essentially a large parking lot with RV pull through spaces. We use it when we go to Birmingham to visit the family," notes one visitor. Birmingham South RV Park features 99 sites open year-round with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups on spacious pads. Sunset RV in Cottondale accommodates large rigs with pull-through sites, while Bama RV Station offers full hookup sites with trash service but limited bathroom facilities.

Sites at Hoover Met Complex are typically level but some parks like Birmingham South may require blocking for proper leveling. Most RV parks permit pets, though rules regarding containment vary by location. Dump stations are available at several facilities including Rolling Hills RV Park and Hoover Met Complex. Highway access is generally convenient with Birmingham South situated just off I-65 providing easy on/off access for overnight travelers. Traffic noise can be noticeable at parks near major highways. Reservations are recommended during football season when RV parks fill quickly with game attendees, especially for parks within 15 miles of Tuscaloosa.

    Bama RV Station

    Good For Quick Overnight Stay

Literally right off the interstate at Tuscaloosa. Much lower noise level than I expected. Definitely a parking lot, without trees. We are in site 9, pretty level gravel site, electric and water hookup only. 2 dump stations are available, 2 dog parks. 30 dollars a night. Mostly long term parking. No firepits or picnic tables. Check in by phone, no office.

    Deerlick Creek

    Awesome little campground

Nice level concrete pads with awesome shade. Bath house stayed clean. Nice 1/2 mile asphalt bike/walking trail. Hiking trail with hills and valleys skirting the lake. Boat ramp with easy access to the lake. Convenient access to Tuscaloosa for supplies, eating or just a change of scenery. Some site are smaller than others and some are pull through. Highly recommend.

    Gunter Hill Campground

    Great Times

    Great time at Gunter Hill

Gunter Hill Corps of Engineers Campground We stayed 2 nights at Site 27 Full hookups (50 amp electric/water/sewer) $35/night Site #27. is a very long, back-in site, on a level concrete pad, very shady and secluded. The driveway is very long. The Catoma Creek is visible and a short walk just to the rear of this site, affording me quick and easy access to get to a bit of fishing.

The campground is just on the west side of Montgomery, a short drive off of the interstate, far enough away to offer plenty of peace and quiet. We enjoyed lots of walks around the park, getting familiar with the campground while exploring the Catoma loop and the more rustic, electric-only Antioc loop. We were able to put our kayaks in easily as well. The restrooms were slightly dated and dark. No trash pick up, but cans available nearby.

The campground served as a good base to explore nearby Montgomery and it’s suburbs.

    Gunter Hill Campground

    We love Gunter Hill!

We are local (30ish miles) but love to just escape here when we have 3 or 4 days and don't want to travel long distance.  Perfect spot to be closer to the river in the summer and in the woods in the fall.  Catoma loop sites are full hookup with concrete pads including both back in and pull through options.  Antioch Loop does not have sewer hookup and these sites are gravel lots but offer some amazing water views.

    Cherokee Campground

More of a Long Term Living Area

Most of the pads were filled with long-term residents. The owners were very nice. The rate was reasonable. Our gravel pad was not wide enough to be a) level and b) slide/awning out at the same time. The electric hook-up was at the opposite end of the pad from the water and sewer hook-ups. Some neighbors were friendly, others were a bit suspicious of us as interlopers based on how many times they walked past our area. Overall, would only stay again in a pinch.

    Sunset RV

    Bright light and road noise

Stopped for an overnight on our way home to Atlanta from a trip out west. Not much of a park. Most sites are long term or semi permanent. Only 6 available for regular RV. Water, 30/50 amp electric & sewer There is a small laundry room The office wasn’t open but we had reservations and had received an email about our site and directions. WiFi was poor. It is right off of I-20 so there was lots of road noise all night. There was a very bright vapor light above our site that lit up the whole area. There is a small dog walking area.

    Rickwood Caverns State Park Campground

The cave is the star attraction

This is a very small campground- 13 improved sites (nine of these have 50 amp electric and can accommodate all sizes of rigs; four are designed for smaller units and have 30 amp electric) plus five primitive sites, which have communal water only (no electric). There is zero privacy/separation between the improved sites, which would make the unimproved sites possibly more appealing (but further from the restroom and it was pouring when we were there). Improved sites are gravel and include a BBQ, fire ring, and a very large picnic table. Rates are $16 for a primitive site/$29 for an improved site plus a $4.75 processing fee for the first night of your stay. Senior discounts are given.

The restrooms are functional and clean but basic. There was a leak in the roof from the pouring rain that could pose a slipping hazard.

There are a large picnic pavilion and two short hiking trails of about a mile each. We hiked the Fossil Mountain trail, which is very rocky. The main draw to this park is the cave. Tours are offered four times daily, January through November. If you camp, you receive a discount on the tour. The tour is worth doing.

Guide to Green Pond

RV camping near Green Pond, Alabama offers travelers full hookup options with easy access to both Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Located in central Alabama approximately 30 miles southwest of Birmingham, this region has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters where temperatures rarely drop below freezing. Most RV parks in this area sit at elevations between 450-600 feet above sea level, contributing to the rolling terrain that characterizes much of central Alabama.

What to do

Explore local breweries: The area around Hoover Met Complex RV Park has expanding beverage options within walking distance. "There is a new brewery within walking distance of the campground," notes Ryan P., making it convenient for RV campers to enjoy local craft beer without driving.

Visit sports facilities: Many campgrounds offer proximity to sporting venues. "Close to sports fields," mentions Chris S. about Hoover Met Complex, while the complex itself provides "playground and rock climbing area" according to chris G., offering additional recreational options beyond camping.

Help during emergencies: The Birmingham area RV parks sometimes serve as refuge during severe weather events. At Birmingham South RV Park, staff demonstrated flexibility during Hurricane Ian when "the RV park was completely full" but maintained "a calm orderly flow of traffic to assigned sites," as observed by pamela B. who appreciated "opening up the campground to campers fleeing the storm without having to pay."

What campers like

Convenient highway access: Many travelers appreciate the strategic location of Sunset RV for overnight stops. "Easy on and off the freeway. Very basic and clean," notes Gus S., making it ideal for travelers on I-20 or I-65 corridors.

Budget-friendly options: Several parks provide economical overnight stays. Bama RV Station has "economy camping option in the economy storage area," according to Ronnie H., while Sunset RV offers "water, 30/50 amp electric & sewer" at reasonable rates that campers appreciate.

Dog-friendly facilities: Multiple parks accommodate pets with dedicated areas. "3 dog parks level lots" at Bama RV Station provide space for pets to exercise, though Cat R. notes the site itself is "definitely a parking lot, without trees" and offers "no firepits or picnic tables."

What you should know

Self-service check-in: Several parks operate with minimal staffing. At Bama RV Station, guests "check in by phone, no office" according to Cat R., while Birmingham South has "a very easy after hours method for checking yourself in" as Jan M. reports.

Limited amenities at some parks: Facilities vary widely between locations. Rolling Hills RV Park exceeds expectations with "quite a bit of space between most of the sites (particularly the back in sites)" according to David S., who noted their "gravel site was fairly level despite being in a hilly area."

Seasonal considerations: Football season significantly impacts availability. Coaches Corner RV Park has "100+ site campground used by RVs during football season sitting less than a mile from campus" as Ray S. points out, making reservations essential during game weekends.

Concrete pad conditions: Site quality varies even within individual parks. One visitor to Birmingham South RV Park found "concrete in disrepair at our site" and "a dangerous hole" hidden in the grass where they "rolled my ankle."

Tips for camping with families

Look for recreational amenities: Some parks offer facilities specifically for children. Hoover Met Complex provides access to "huge water park/splash pad" that "was a ton of fun for the kids" according to Paul C., making it suitable for family stays.

Consider noise levels: Highway proximity affects sound levels at certain sites. Joel R. found "bright vapor light above our site that lit up the whole area" and "lots of road noise all night" at Sunset RV, which might impact light-sensitive sleepers or young children.

Find campgrounds with pool access: During summer months, swimming options provide welcome relief. At Peach Park RV Park, Beth R. notes there's a "playground" and "separate picnic area" making it suitable for families, though she cautions the park has "no signs" making it somewhat difficult to locate.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Prepare leveling equipment for most parks. At Wind Creek Atmore Casino RV Park, Brittany V. found that "while they are paved sites, we found that you do have to level out still by around 3 inches."

Pull-through availability: Several parks offer convenient pull-through options. At Birmingham South, Beth H. appreciated that her site "was very level and we didn't even unhook from the truck!" which was "great for our overnight stay."

Campground navigation: Some parks require careful driving. At Sunset RV, Cat R. observed "two parking areas" where "the first area has the office, laundry and bathroom" but notes that "each site faces the one parking next to you," requiring some maneuvering awareness.
