What campers like
Waterfront camping: Joe Wheeler State Park Campground receives high marks for its spacious lakeside sites. "Most sites are on the water with full hook ups! All sites are spacious! Hiking trails all around with water access everywhere," explains Noel J. Many campers appreciate the combination of water views and utility connections.
Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds offer good separation between campsites. At Brushy Lake Recreation Area, "The sites are each pretty sizable and have a good bit of privacy. They also each have a picnic table that is bolted to the ground and a hook for hanging gear and trash," according to one camper.
Clean facilities: Point Mallard City Campground maintains well-kept common areas despite high usage. "Nice clean campground. Walking distance to water park. Sites are very nice, although a little close to each other," notes Timothy R. The campground offers trash collection three times daily, eliminating the need to visit dumpsters.
What you should know
Site spacing varies significantly: Some Trinity area camping facilities have tightly packed sites. At Point Mallard, "This place is tight. Not in the Urban Dictionary meaning of tight, but in the actual meaning of tight. It's hard to tell if there are more trees or RVs on the property," reports Katie D.
Many campgrounds have permanent residents: Several RV parks around Trinity host long-term campers. At T's Outback RV Park, one visitor noted, "Down here working for a few months and wanted a clean quiet safe place. This place is all the above. $450 a month including utilities."
Internet connectivity varies widely: Cell service and WiFi availability fluctuate throughout the region. At Quail Creek RV Resort, "The CG WiFi was pretty good, but we put up our Starlink with no problem getting a northern shot. We got 3 bars on Verizon," according to a recent visitor. Some more remote sites have no connectivity at all.
Tips for camping with families
Water park access: Point Mallard Campground provides easy access to the adjacent water park. "The fact that this campground stays packed should be an indication of what a great place it is! Very friendly staff, clean bath houses and next to a fun water park," notes one reviewer.
Playground facilities: Monte Sano State Park offers multiple play areas for children. "There are cool little wooden play obstacles for the kids in the campground and a huge playground 1/2 mile away inside the park," writes Greg S. The park also features a Japanese garden that interests children.
Bug protection: Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday has beautiful waterfront sites but requires insect preparation. "This is a huge, beautiful campground with spots that back right up to the water's edge. There are plenty of amenities for the kids, and we had a blast. Definitely pack lots of bug repellent if you stay on the water," advises Elizabeth H.
Tips from RVers
Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging access points. When approaching Quail Creek RV Resort, "Go left at the stop sign on Mt. Zion Rd from Nat Key Rd when departing the CG! When we departed... we took the right turn, and about the time the trailer swung, we saw the drop-off into the ditch."
Site angles and positioning: Trinity area RV sites often require careful navigation. At Point Mallard, "The spaces were a little bit tight & close but they were angled nicely. We had to maneuver the trailer around the trees but not complaining about the shade," according to Timothy T.
Overnight stops: Northgate RV Travel Park provides convenient access for those passing through. "Nice gravel pull-through sites, but not much else here," notes Gaye N. The campground offers full hookups with 50/30/20 amp electric service and accepts cash or check payment.
