Best Campgrounds near Trinity, AL

The northern Alabama countryside surrounding Trinity includes several established campgrounds for RV, tent, and cabin camping within a 30-mile radius. Point Mallard City Campground in nearby Decatur offers year-round camping with full hookups, while Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday in Hillsboro provides cabin accommodations alongside traditional camping options. The region encompasses developed sites with amenities ranging from primitive tent areas to full-service RV parks, with most campgrounds situated near Wheeler Lake and the Tennessee River system, providing water access for recreation.

Road conditions and site accessibility vary significantly between campgrounds in the Trinity area, with most offering drive-in access on paved or well-maintained gravel roads. "Monte Sano State Park has so much to do you could easily spend an extended time there and not be bored," noted one visitor about a popular destination east of Huntsville. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall the preferred camping seasons. Many campgrounds require reservations, particularly during weekends and summer months when facilities near water reach capacity quickly. Cell phone coverage can be spotty in more remote areas, though signal is generally reliable at established campgrounds closer to Decatur and Huntsville.

Campers consistently rate water proximity as a top consideration when selecting sites in this region. The Tennessee River and its reservoir system create numerous opportunities for waterfront camping, with Joe Wheeler State Park and Point Mallard offering sites near shorelines. Monte Sano State Park provides a different experience with its mountain setting and extensive trail network. A reviewer highlighted that "the campsites in the primitive area are typically separated greatly by trees, so you get more a feeling of privacy." Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, particularly at dawn and dusk, when they frequently appear near camping areas. Though some campgrounds lie close to urban areas, many provide sufficient tree cover and spacing to create a sense of seclusion even when facilities are at capacity.

    Boondock Dispersed Camping Alabama

    Simple & Peaceful

Nice little spot out in the forest. Spotted the gravel road and went down a little to the first opening. Pretty decent sized clearing. You can hear cars on the road, but it didn’t bother us. Pretty warm, humid, and buggy this time of year, but cooled off through the night.

The stars were incredible after the moon went down a bit. Lots of bird sounds especially in the morning. A previous camper had left behind some kindling, which was cool. Ended up having a little cell reception with T Mobile.

Jay Landings Marina & RV Park

    Beautiful Sunsets

Absolutely beautiful place to stay with all the needed amenities plus extra! I felt very safe here every day while my husband was at work. They have a shower house, laundry room, several common areas to sit, docs, boat ramp, salt water pool & basketball hoop. But for the noise, this would be a five star place to stay. There is a scrap metal recycling plant beside the campground, a train not too far away (whistle blows at night 😫) and across the river is a nuclear power plant and a refinery. The grounds are very well kept with lovey landscaping, paved roads and level sites with crushed rock and grass. Jessica at the front desk was pleasant and easy to work with. I would absolutely stay here again.

    Joe Wheeler State Park Campground

    beautiful RV/Tent sites

Stayed in A25 RV/Tent spot and had a beautiful view of the lake. Great little hiking trails near by. We ended up in this spot because the dispersed camping area had tornado destruction from years ago. So it was a bit pricey for just tent camping ($46)

    Northgate RV Travel Park

Nice place to JUST stay in your RV

Nice level gravel pull through sites. Full hook ups. Great water pressure. WiFi signal was very good ! Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and only one other RV was here. As explained in the description no bathhouse, pool or anything so just basic RVing. The only “complaints” were no fire pits for fires and is a little noisy from the highway traffic. Otherwise great pull thru full hookup RV park for the price.

    Mulberry Creek Camp

    Peaceful Tranquility

I stayed 2 weeks in June and came back on the first of July. I felt blessed to be able to stay, until July 7th. I love Mulberry Creek Camp! Misty and Jason provide the cleanest, neatest and friendliest campground site, that I have ever stayed at! I plan to come back in September! It is so peaceful and tranquil. Turning down Mulberry Creek Camp road makes my endorphins rise and the relaxation begins immediately. Have I even mentioned, the spectacular Fireworks Display, Mulberry Creek Camp provided? It was so awesome that not just their 2 Campgrounds were entertained, but also the surrounding small towns. Thank you Misty and Jason, for providing entertainment for all, your hard work does not go unnoticed! See you in September!

    Thousand Trails Hidden Cove

    Very nice, quiet campground

Great campground & people! Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of things to do. No fenced in dog park but plenty of space to have one. Right on the lake but unaware of any kind of rentals available nearby— closest rentals are 40 mins away on the opposite side of the lake. Nearest Walmart is Cullman which is 45 mins away. Wouldn’t recommend staying here if you prefer to be closer to the city but perfect if you want to be in the middle of the woods and have no reason to leave. Very hot, humid and rainy time of year! Would be back in the fall perhaps.

    Monte Sano State Park Campground

    4.9 stars

Pretty spectacular all around. Sites are spaced well, wooded, and many have direct access to the trails. The trails! So many! We saw 4 waterfalls, including one inside a cave. A mountain bikers or hikers paradise here. It is in a beautiful area with nice homes and mountain views. The camp store is great and the two gates with code are a nice touch. There are cool little wooden play obstacles for the kids in the campground and a huge playground 1/2 mile away inside the park. The Japanese garden is very cool also. Wonderful overlooks to take in the surrounding area. Just a short drive down the mountain to great shops and restaurants. Just what a state park should be. Loved our site along the trail and ridge.

    David Crockett State Park Campground

    Peaceful and clean

I stayed at Campground #1, site on the river #18. It was peaceful and so beautiful. The wood and ice prices were very reasonable. The great check-in girl at the desk was very sweet and informative.

Many campsites require advance booking during peak seasons, particularly those offering water activities from April through September.

What to do

Kayaking and water sports: Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday offers waterfront sites perfect for launching kayaks and small boats. "We took a kayak out fishing and caught a large bass. Fun memories," notes Tom G. The campground provides various water equipment rentals including paddle boards, kayaks, and jet skis.

Mountain biking and hiking: Monte Sano State Park Campground features multiple trail difficulty levels for both hikers and mountain bikers. "The hiking is moderate to extreme up and down some interesting rock formations. The mountain bikers and bikers seem to enjoy themselves too, flying down the closed roadway," according to one visitor. The park's extensive trail network connects to an adjacent land trust area.

Fishing opportunities: Brushy Lake Recreation Area provides excellent fishing access for $5 per night. "The 33 acre lake is perfect for canoeing or kayaking. The fishing is excellent," reports Gregg G. The campground includes a fishing pier and bank access points around the small lake.

What campers like

Waterfront camping: Joe Wheeler State Park Campground receives high marks for its spacious lakeside sites. "Most sites are on the water with full hook ups! All sites are spacious! Hiking trails all around with water access everywhere," explains Noel J. Many campers appreciate the combination of water views and utility connections.

Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds offer good separation between campsites. At Brushy Lake Recreation Area, "The sites are each pretty sizable and have a good bit of privacy. They also each have a picnic table that is bolted to the ground and a hook for hanging gear and trash," according to one camper.

Clean facilities: Point Mallard City Campground maintains well-kept common areas despite high usage. "Nice clean campground. Walking distance to water park. Sites are very nice, although a little close to each other," notes Timothy R. The campground offers trash collection three times daily, eliminating the need to visit dumpsters.

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Some Trinity area camping facilities have tightly packed sites. At Point Mallard, "This place is tight. Not in the Urban Dictionary meaning of tight, but in the actual meaning of tight. It's hard to tell if there are more trees or RVs on the property," reports Katie D.

Many campgrounds have permanent residents: Several RV parks around Trinity host long-term campers. At T's Outback RV Park, one visitor noted, "Down here working for a few months and wanted a clean quiet safe place. This place is all the above. $450 a month including utilities."

Internet connectivity varies widely: Cell service and WiFi availability fluctuate throughout the region. At Quail Creek RV Resort, "The CG WiFi was pretty good, but we put up our Starlink with no problem getting a northern shot. We got 3 bars on Verizon," according to a recent visitor. Some more remote sites have no connectivity at all.

Tips for camping with families

Water park access: Point Mallard Campground provides easy access to the adjacent water park. "The fact that this campground stays packed should be an indication of what a great place it is! Very friendly staff, clean bath houses and next to a fun water park," notes one reviewer.

Playground facilities: Monte Sano State Park offers multiple play areas for children. "There are cool little wooden play obstacles for the kids in the campground and a huge playground 1/2 mile away inside the park," writes Greg S. The park also features a Japanese garden that interests children.

Bug protection: Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday has beautiful waterfront sites but requires insect preparation. "This is a huge, beautiful campground with spots that back right up to the water's edge. There are plenty of amenities for the kids, and we had a blast. Definitely pack lots of bug repellent if you stay on the water," advises Elizabeth H.

Tips from RVers

Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging access points. When approaching Quail Creek RV Resort, "Go left at the stop sign on Mt. Zion Rd from Nat Key Rd when departing the CG! When we departed... we took the right turn, and about the time the trailer swung, we saw the drop-off into the ditch."

Site angles and positioning: Trinity area RV sites often require careful navigation. At Point Mallard, "The spaces were a little bit tight & close but they were angled nicely. We had to maneuver the trailer around the trees but not complaining about the shade," according to Timothy T.

Overnight stops: Northgate RV Travel Park provides convenient access for those passing through. "Nice gravel pull-through sites, but not much else here," notes Gaye N. The campground offers full hookups with 50/30/20 amp electric service and accepts cash or check payment.
