      Gulf State Park Campground

Beautiful park, so many things to do!

We stayed 4 nights at Gulf State Park, over the 4th of July, 2019. We made the reservations online, and would have done better to have made them a few months earlier, so that we could have insured more shade for our site. But, we could see the lake across the road, and we were really close to the air conditioned bath house/restrooms, and within a short walk from the swimming pool, nature center, lily pond, camp store, air conditioned laundry, tennis courts, swings, etc. It was a pretty good site, if lacking good shade. There was a camp dog show, a poster contest, a bicycle decorating parade/contest, and an ongoing day camp for the kids (seemed to be Christian based, and we didn’t have time to check it out). The beach is not close enough to walk, but you drive to a parking lot and walk out on the boardwalk next to a pavilion which has restrooms, and an outdoor shower to help you get rid of sand. Waves are pretty calm, so older kids a can enjoy it without having to have an adult holding them. Nice afternoon breezes. When we needed medical care for a problem, the staff were very helpful in telling us which place would be best for our needs. Friendly staff all round. We all felt very safe in this campground.

The Retreat RV & Campground On Styx River

      Welcoming

The retreat offers several amenities including showers, laundromat, and gas grills. There are even bouncy houses and playgrounds for the kids.

It's located on the river and they have a pet beach separate so even your dogs can enjoy the water.

The camp manager is nice and very helpful. They are definitely a great asset.

Full service hookups are currently limited as they work on an expansion, but they do have plenty of water/power hookups both off and on the river. There's also a cabin, glamping tents, and a tiny house. There are plenty of shaded spots.

There are a few long term residents who are friendly and welcoming.

I definitely recommend this campground for a fun, relaxing stay.

      Gulf State Park Campground

      Beaches and bikes

Gulf Shores Alabama Gulf State Park Current camping spot on the canal. Ours is a nice pull thru with electric and water. Almost 500 sites here from tent to big rig friendly. Spacious sites, some with foliage, some with Lake or canal views. Grills but no fire pits. Right now there's a shortage of usable bath houses because of hurricane damage repairs in progress. Good wifi, local TV, and cell service. Close to stores and dining. Free access to adjacent pier. Great coastal access. Free use of bikes. Lots of great paved and boardwalk trails. Gators, snakes, armadillos and birds reside here.

      Gulf State Park Campground

      Great Spot for Family Fun

You could stay at this park for your whole trip and not have to leave. There is an awesome pool and splash pad, basketball courts, and boat launch on the property, plus a laundromat and impressive camp store. The restroom facilities are relatively nice and are always air conditioned during the warmer months. The only complaint I have of this park is that there are only 11 tent camping sites. They claim any site can be used for tent camping, but no one in a tent wants to set up on a concrete pad, especially when it is hot! The tent sites they do have are primitive without water or electrical hook ups - it would be nice to have some sites with hook ups. The sites they do have for tents are very shady and clean. They do back up to a swampy canal, but I have never seen any alligators although I am sure they are in there somewhere.

I would definitely recommend this park for families.

      Gulf Shores-Pensacola West KOA

      Beach front

This beach front campground is beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. Under new ownership they seem friendly and helpful. Dog friendly park that is away from the major city hubs, nothing but the beach is walkable. Our site was level with a grill, fire pit, picnic table and a wooden deck.

      Blakeley State Park Campground

Very large park, hiking, camping, battlegrounds

Blakely State Park is a very large State Park, with different choices for camping. There are larger primitive tent sites, smaller tent sites with power/water hookups, RV sites, two primitive cabins and 2 newer cabins which are very nice. There's TONS of hiking, a battleground for history buffs, a playground, a boatdock, lots of hiking, horseback riding etc.

I stayed in one of the two Squirrels Nest, which are primitive cabins. Basically open air cabins. 2 walls, a roof and 2 walls of screens. There are two wooden platforms for beds. A twin and a queen, and barstools to sit inside and look out into the woods, over the hill in which they are nestled. There's a sink (but no water) and a cabinet, and outside a large deck with bench seating. Below is a fire pit and picnic table. There is a shared porta potty outside of the two cabins. These cabins are a bit of a drive out in the woods, so make sure your vehicle is up to it. It's very peaceful out there. My cabin was inhabited by mice at night, so I kept my food in airtight plastic paint bucket containers & my belongings covered by garbage bags on one of the platforms and had my air mattress inside a pop-up mosquito tent, so the mice did not bother me. I was after all in their house. I sprinkled peppermint oil around my gear & my bed platform to keep the mice away. Next time I will have my food in a large cooler so that the wildlife is not attracted.

There are hiking trails by these sites, as well as, steps down the hill, leading off into another trail.

i would stay there again. Great place to get away.

    Guide to Daphne

Camping options near Daphne, Alabama provide access to the diverse coastal ecosystems of Mobile Bay and surrounding waterways. The region sits at just 30 feet above sea level with high humidity year-round and average summer temperatures exceeding 90°F. Winter camping offers milder conditions with temperatures rarely dropping below 40°F, making tent camping viable throughout most seasons.

    What to do

Water access adventures: Meaher State Park Campground provides easy access to Mobile Delta waters with boat launches for personal watercraft. "Beautiful clean park. Getting upgraded. Two wonderful boardwalks. One to the Bayou. Ice machine, showers cabins, upgraded tent sites and wifi. Large sites with full hookups," notes John R., highlighting the infrastructure for water-based activities.

Historical exploration: Blakeley State Park Campground offers 26 miles of trails through Civil War sites and historic Blakeley town ruins. "2000 acres. Walking auto cell phone tours of civil war. Boat tours. Big pull through rv spots and a tent campground. Awesome," writes Kevin L. These self-guided tours let you explore at your own pace, with interpretive signs explaining battlefield significance.

Fishing opportunities: The Retreat RV Campground offers direct access to Styx River for anglers. "Awesome campground but no fish. Great place for families with little ones," shares Patricia, suggesting the spot works better for wading and play than serious fishing. For saltwater fishing, Mobile Bay offers multiple shore access points with chances to catch redfish, speckled trout and flounder.

    What campers like

Wildlife viewing: Fort Pickens Campground offers abundant wildlife observation opportunities just an hour from Daphne. "Amazingly beautiful campground. Not much to do other than walk across the road to the Gulf of Mexico!!!!! Clean bathrooms," notes Chris M. The natural setting attracts diverse coastal birds and marine life.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise bathroom cleanliness across multiple parks. "Bathhouses are nice. Only problem is they are push button showers so it takes a couple pushes to get it hot," explains Cindy C. about Meaher State Park. Similarly, at Bay Breeze RV on the Bay, campers note "staff was very friendly, campground was very clean."

Spacious sites: Bay Breeze RV on the Bay offers glamping close to Daphne, Alabama with well-spaced waterfront sites. "25 site campground right on the bay. Staff was very friendly, campground was very clean. Very close to some great restaurants," reports Michael D. The small campground size creates a less crowded experience compared to larger resort-style operations.

    What you should know

Site conditions: Some campgrounds have leveling challenges. At The Retreat, "Make sure you bring leveling blocks, some of the sites are fairly level while other are not. Our site sloped down towards the river and we needed extra blocks," advises Chloe F.

Weather preparedness: Gulf Coast storms can appear quickly. "During a severe storm, the owner talked to us to ensure we were aware of which building to use for safety along with written instructions," notes a visitor to All About Relaxing RV Park.

Reservation timing: Gulf State Park Campground requires advanced planning. "Very popular, so plan ahead. Over 400 sites, great amenities, miles of biking and hiking trails," advises Mike H. For luxury glamping near Daphne, Alabama, many sites book 6+ months in advance, especially waterfront locations.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort offers scheduled family programming. "We stayed at Jellystone this past weekend and ended up staying a third night (unplanned). We had a lot of fun. The kids loved all of the Saturday activities," shares Jaimee D. Activities often include hay rides, crafts, and character appearances.

Wildlife education: Incorporate ranger-led programs at Gulf State Park. "Keep your eyes peeled for wonderful birds and alligators!" suggests Hannah C. Many parks offer junior ranger programs with activity booklets focused on local ecology.

Insect protection: Bring effective bug spray for coastal camping. "I visited this campground on my way through the mobile bay area... The other downside to this campground is its proximity to the highway," notes Asher K. about Meaher State Park. Campers often mention ants and mosquitoes as particular challenges in this humid environment.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Check specific site utilities before booking. "The campground website currently (September 4, 2021) that all electric campsites are 50amp which they are not, if you need a 50amp site you will have to call the office to ensure you can secure one," warns Chloe F. about The Retreat RV Campground.

Arrival assistance: Some parks provide personalized check-in service. "First night in our new Class C. The owner met us at the gate, escorted us to our space and showed us how to hook everything up," shares ScottFrance about All About Relaxing RV Park.

Dump station conditions: Inspect dump facilities upon arrival. "The dump station was terribly unlevel and we had many issues dumping our tanks," reports a visitor to The Retreat. Other parks offer full hookups but may have sewer connection placement that requires extension hoses.
