Best RV Parks & Resorts near Wheatland, WY

Wheatland, Wyoming provides several RV parks with varying amenities and hookup options. Mountain View Park offers full hookup sites with 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections on a level parking area just off the highway. Peak View RV Park, located about 13 miles from town, features big-rig friendly sites up to 60 feet in length with full hookups including 50-amp service. Lewis Park in downtown Wheatland maintains six gravel pad sites with 20/30/50 amp electrical hookups and operates on a donation basis with a 3-night maximum stay. Arrowhead RV Park and Chuck Wagon RV Park in Fort Laramie round out the options with additional full-hookup sites for motorhomes. "Spots are just off the highway but it was quiet, pull through parking lot with no trees. Clean bathrooms, coin showers and laundry right across the street."

Most RV parks in the Wheatland area remain open year-round, though some like Pony Soldier RV Park operate seasonally from May through September. Cell service varies across the region, with most parks reporting adequate Verizon coverage. Dump stations are available at Lewis Park and near Glendo State Park headquarters for those staying at electric-only sites. RV travelers should note that train noise affects several parks, particularly those near the Union Pacific line. According to one visitor, "The sites for the most part are level and gravel and some shade. There are picnic benches scattered throughout the campground." Potable water access points are limited at some locations, so filling fresh water tanks before arrival is recommended when staying at electric-only sites. Many parks accommodate pets but have specific restrictions regarding outdoor fires and grilling.

Reno Cove — Glendo State Park

    Large State Park

Arrived at the state park gate and checked in with no issues. However, getting to Reno Cove Campground (CG) was a little confusing. The very nice lady at the gate was pretty sure you took the first left past the gate, which was correct. We were glad we had filled our fresh water tank before leaving our last stop (only had a little over an hours drive as we do not travel with a full tank on long drives) as there was no water spigot in the top portion of Reno Cove. We were in RC-11, which is a large, wide back-in with 50/30/20AMP electric. We were told at check in that if we didn’t like our site, we could go look at Two Moon CG. Glad we didn’t because Two Moon CG has several entrances and is large with 87 sites, most of which are primitive. The electric sites are stretched around the playground area. I would not suggest traveling around Two Moon with a large 5th wheel as there are pine trees overhanging and narrow roads that would have scraped the heck out of our 39’ 5th Wheel. You’d be fine with a smaller travel trailer but be sure to check site lengths and reviews on what type of trailers have been in a particular sites. Two Moon does have potable water spigots near each of the entrances. The rest of the CGs are primitive and we did not take the time to explore them all but they do have various sized sites, for example Shelter Point has big-rig friendly sites, but no electric. The challenge for some of the smaller ones are the rough gravel roads in. The Glendo State Park website under 'Campgrounds' gives a pretty good rundown on sites and which ones are electric. There was no shade at any of the Reno Cove sites but really good views of the landscape and reservoir in our site plus sites 7-10. We did not get any OTA channels nor is there WiFi in this CG. We got 4 bars on Verizon. The dumpsters for the Reno Cove area are down by the boat launch. The nearest potable water is straight past the main park entrance a couple of miles away just past the Marina across from the State Park Headquarters at the dump station. There was a fire ban while we were here but the fire pits we saw were pretty full of garbage. We would have better enjoyed the clear dark skies if the trailer across from us wasn’t lit up like a Christmas tree from dusk until literally dawn. That’s not the park’s fault, just more and more rude campers out there these days. You could also hear the trains from Glendo, but the sounds were not overwhelming.

Two Moon — Glendo State Park

Beautiful views and great hiking and mountain biking trails

We had a nice pull through site away from the water.  Just walking around the campground was beautiful.  We hiked all over the area and rode our mountain bikes.  It's a very family friendly campground, but with enough privacy to really enjoy your own space.  There is quite a bit of boat noise if you are near the water, but it quiets down at sunset.  We didn't see a lot of wildlife, but that was fine.

    Pioneer Park

    Nice city park

We got a drive thru site with water & 50 amp. Plenty of room for our 40’ class a and dingy. No sewer hookup, but a dump station on site. Plenty of shade trees and it’s a short walk to the river. First come, first serve. At $20, it’s a deal!

    Guernsey State Park Campground

Massive Campground with Plenty to Choose from

If you can't find a campground you need to not be camping. There are options ranging from Tent to Yurts. It really is a diverse place. Lots of big rigs with big boats at this place. The sites range from no electricity (which made it a bit louder with generators going at night) to 50 amp. Little dusty in places. We stayed in Sandy Beach and had a great view of the water which was perfect at sunset, but we also had the trains near as well. The campground didn't have flush toilets which is why most have their big rigs to use. The town itself doesn't offer too much and it looked as though most people were there to boat.

    Larson Park Campground

Ranger Review of Ice Mule Cooler at Larson Park Campground Wyoming.

    p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 115%; }

Ranger Review of Larson Park Campground Wyoming.

Larson Park Campground is a city owned campground and is attached to the Guernsey golf course, so if you like to golf this one might just be for you. The campground has 15 sites RV sites with 30/50 power on shared power pedestals. These are back in sites all right next to each other. Their is a nice grassy area for tents. The grassy area as several picnic tables and BBQ grills, but not enough for every camp location. A pavilion has quiet a few picnic tables allowing you to eat get out of the rain, or in the shade on a hot day. The site has a restroom facilities and showers. A small play ground structure is available for the kids. Their are several historical sites in the area, a must see is the Oregon Trail ruts located just a short distance away. Be sure to visit Register Cliff just a few miles away and Fort Laramie is 30 minutes down the highway. The campground has a small store with friendly staff. Water is available, each shared pedestal has a frost-free for water.  Hookup sites are $20, Dry camp $14 and Tents $12.

Ranger Review of Ice Mule Cooler Pro Large (23L)

We used our Ice Mule cooler as our cooler for our trip to Guernsey Wyoming. Placed our snacks and drinks in the cooler with two ice packs at 6am Friday morning. Was amazed that this kept everything cold through Sunday evening. Being able to carry a cooler on you back is a nice feature. We are looking forward to taking this on our canoe trips this summer as this is going to be way easier than lugging a hard sided cooler from our canoe to campsite each day. The pack/cooler is also comfortable to wear making it useful to long day hikes on hot days. It is going to be nice to have a nice cold drink on a hike when it is 90 degrees out.

    Lewis Park

    Great donation-only town park

We stopped for the night at Lewis Park en route from Utah to Nebraska, and we're very happy that we did. It's barely a mile off I-25 in Wheatland.

This town park campground includes six gravel pad 20/30/50A electric sites for RVs and numerous sites for tents only. Potable water is available at several hydrants, including one right adjacent to the first site, where we stayed. There's also an RV dump available, and best of all it's all free! (But donations at the park's iron ranger are encouraged.) Maximum stay is 3 nights. Sites are reasonably level side to side, but far less so front to back.

The park itself is in immaculate condition with well-manicured grass. The town itself is neat, tidy and clean. Cell signal was solid on Verizon 4G LTE, but throughput rates were spotty.

As the other reviewer said, there are a few Union Pacific freight trains that pass right by the campground per day, but we didn't find that to be as bothersome as we expected even though we deducted one star for that "feature." The park also includes wonderful amenities for kids, including a playground, disc golf course, and one of the most elaborate and well-kept mini-golf courses that we've ever seen. There's also a municipal swimming pool immediately adjacent. But the campground is well separated from all the other activity, and we enjoyed a quiet stay before getting back on the road in the morning.

Regrettably, as we were in and out for a quick overnight we didn't snap any photos.

    Mountain View Park

    Nothing special but clean

This is the better of the 2 rv parks in town. Again its mostly working people doing extended stays. Its sandwiched between a trailer park and a couple of gastations. It is gravel lot in-between city streets. It is a quiet area but has some foot traffic. 3 bars verizon signal. All the standard hookups and big propane tanks uou can rent. Their is also a coin laundry room on site.

Colter Bay Campground — Glendo State Park

    Great campsite

Really convenient campsite in the Grand Tetons. Very close to several attractions. Had shower and laundry facilities along with other amenities close by in the village. Restrooms were close and were satisfactory in cleanliness. Did have a dump station for flushing away soapy camp cooking water. I did see a bear drinking water from a puddle as soon as I pulled up, so definitely do your part to keep food and other items locked up and safe.

    Guernsey State Park Campground

    Extremely large State Park

I think I gave this park four stars out of low expectations. Middle of nowhere Guernsey Wyoming the state park wraps around a reservoir with beautiful rock formations. There are campgrounds scattered all over and around the campground. If you were in a big rig this is not the easiest place to camp… Be careful where the office places you if you are in a large trailer RV. There are many switchbacks and some elevation to climb. Once you’re on top at the overlooks it’s very scenic. Be careful of the weather change… Within 24 hours the forecast changed from 80° to 35° fortunately we had a Yurt with wood stove.

Guide to Wheatland

RV camping near Wheatland, Wyoming offers sites with diverse amenities across several small communities. Located in the eastern Wyoming plains at approximately 4,750 feet elevation, the area experiences dry summers and cold winters with strong winds common throughout the year. Most campgrounds remain accessible from spring through fall, though some limit operations during winter months when temperatures regularly drop below freezing.

What to do

Historic site exploration: 15 miles from Wheatland at Fort Laramie National Historic Site, where visitors can tour preserved military buildings. "We traveled to Oregon Trail tracks, Pony Express stop, and Fort Laramie on a day trip," notes a camper at Peak View RV Park.

City park recreation: Lewis Park offers activities beyond camping with "a nice little miniature golf course, tennis courts, a skateboard park, pavilions, a small amphitheater and playground equipment," according to a visitor who adds that the "park itself is in immaculate condition with well-manicured grass."

Swimming facilities: During summer months, the municipal swimming pool adjacent to Lewis Park provides cooling relief from summer heat. "Great little community park that offers RV and tent sites... with community pool, mini golf, playground, grills, tennis courts and skatepark."

What campers like

Economical camping options: Lewis Park has traditionally operated on a donation basis. "This town park campground includes six gravel pad 20/30/50A electric sites for RVs and numerous sites for tents only. Potable water is available at several hydrants... There's also an RV dump available, and best of all it's all free!"

Easy highway access: Mountain View Park provides convenient overnight stops right off the highway. A visitor notes: "We didn't need the hook ups, just pulled in and out early next morning. It worked great for us!"

Museum access: Pony Soldier RV Park offers unique cultural attractions on-site. "There is also a history museum on the property," reports one camper who appreciated the educational opportunity during their stay.

What you should know

Train noise impacts sleep: Multiple campgrounds in the area sit near active Union Pacific railroad tracks. At Lewis Park, "there are a few Union Pacific freight trains that pass right by the campground per day," while at Chuck Wagon RV Park, a camper warns "Commercial Trains goes all night and day with loud horn."

Limited amenities at some parks: Several campgrounds offer basic facilities with few extras. City Slickers RV Park features "27 sites(RV) with full hook ups on a complete gravel area with not much shade."

Cash payment requirements: Some smaller parks don't accept credit cards. A camper at Pony Soldier RV Park notes "Cash only to pay for site-$45 for 30 amp."

Tips for camping with families

Community recreation options: Lewis Park provides extensive recreational facilities beyond camping. "The park included a nice little miniature golf course, tennis courts, a skateboard park, pavilions, a small amphitheater and playground equipment."

Limited shade at many sites: Pack sun protection as most campgrounds have minimal tree cover. City Slickers RV Park has "27 sites(RV) with full hook ups on a complete gravel area with not much shade," according to a visitor.

Consider proximity to amenities: Some parks require significant driving to reach services. Peak View RV Park sits "13 miles away for gas and groceries," but offers "many historical places to visit just 15 minutes away… Ft. Laremie, Oregon Trial Ruts, Gurernsey National Park and the Register cliff."

Tips from RVers

Shower facility limitations: Bathroom and shower availability varies significantly between campgrounds. At Arrowhead RV Park, a camper reported, "Toilets were in the adjacent coin laundry, only not available from 9pm to 6am."

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven parking areas at some locations. At Lewis Park, "Sites are reasonably level side to side, but far less so front to back."

Cell service reliability: Most campgrounds report adequate mobile connectivity. Lewis Park offers "Great Verizon cell phone coverage," making it suitable for remote workers or those needing to stay connected.
