Friend Park Campground — Medicine Bow Routt NFs & Thunder Basin NG

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reaching Friend Park requires navigating dirt and gravel roads, and campers arriving from the south on unpaved routes should have a 4WD vehicle. The road is bumpy in sections and takes longer than expected. The campground sits within Medicine Bow-Routt NFs & Thunder Basin NG, with pine trees and open sightlines toward Laramie Peak. Ten sites are available, and bears have been spotted in the area. No bear boxes are on-site, so food storage in a locked vehicle is necessary. A pump spigot provides water, though running it well before use and boiling it afterward is advisable. At $20 per night with reservations available, this small camp rewards those willing to make the drive.

Small campground for the night

Not the best campground we’ve ever been to, but seemed pretty quiet with only 3 other spots taken while we were there. Fairly close together if you’ve got neighbors but also some walk in sites for tents which were a little further down from the main sites. Small creek closeby on the trial about 2 mins from the campground so we were able to wash off. There was a spigot in the campground but you pump it, it came out yellow at the beginning so make sure you pump it well before using - we boiled it when it became clearer anyway just to be sure. Would not recommend getting to this campsite from the south roads/ unpaved if you have anything less than a 4WD. We nearly didn’t make it to tell the tale with our 2WD. Dirt & paved roads from the north were better but still keep in mind they’re dirt/ gravel.

Great hidden gem

Friend park was an absolute hidden gem. We only live about and hour away and had planned to camp in esterbrook. Well they were full and we saw a sign for Friend Park and figured, why not. I almost turned around because it was taking so long I thought I was lost. The road is very bumpy in spots. I did see people taking an RV there but if it was my money, I sure wouldn't. There are only 10 spots, first come first serve. There are bears in the area and no bear boxes so you will need to keep things locked in your car. It's a great view of laramie peak and you are surrounded by pine trees. It was a nice surprise to find friend park.
