What campers like
Affordable city park camping: Torrington's Pioneer Park offers excellent value. "We got a drive thru site with water & 50 amp. Plenty of room for our 40' class a and dingy. No sewer hookup, but a dump station on site. Plenty of shade trees and it's a short walk to the river. First come, first serve. At $20, it's a deal!"
Waterfront dispersed camping: Grayrocks Reservoir Public Access provides prime lakeside spots. "We found a spot right on the lakeside which was secluded from everyone. If you are looking for trees, this is not the place. Bring lots of water toys," advises a recent camper.
Family-friendly amenities: Local parks provide recreational facilities beyond just camping. "Nice site with water & electric. Good spacing between sites. Clean and open. Nice to walk about the whole area. Concrete bean bag toss games and about 5 horseshoe pitches. Bring your own toys. Basketball court and kids playground as part of the whole park."
What you should know
Weather considerations: High winds affect camping comfort, particularly at open sites. "It can be noisy if neighbors are running generators but otherwise very nice," notes a camper at Two Moon campground.
Limited shade at some locations: Several campgrounds offer minimal tree cover. "Sites were nicely spread out for a major CG. Most near water had trees. Ones in middle not much shade," reports a Guernsey State Park visitor.
Train noise: Several campgrounds sit near active train tracks. At Lewis Park, "there are a few Union Pacific freight trains that pass right by the campground per day, but we didn't find that to be as bothersome as we expected."
Water quality alerts: Monitor reservoir conditions before swimming. "Beware of the water. There was some sort of bacteria warning when we visited. Other than that, there was privacy, tons of open air, and a beautiful view."
Tips for camping with families
Community park advantages: Lewis Park offers free camping with many amenities. "Great little community park that offers RV and tent sites for free. Well maintained city park with community pool, mini golf, playground, grills, tennis courts and skatepark."
Budget-friendly options: Several parks charge minimal fees. "Peaceful spot with electric, water, and restrooms for $20," notes a camper at Pioneer Park.
Recreation variety: Two Moon — Glendo State Park provides diverse activities. "Glendo Lake is a great place to go with the family to get away! There is fishing, hiking, beautiful views, and it's peaceful. The camp grounds are nicely put together."
