Cabin accommodations in Alta, Wyoming are situated near the Grand Teton mountain range, with altitudes ranging from 6,400 to 8,500 feet depending on location. The area experiences cool summer evenings with temperatures often dropping into the 40s, even in July and August. Many cabin properties remain open from late May through mid-October, with seasonal closures during the snowy winter months.
What to do
Fishing access: 10-minute drive to Indian Creek from most cabin locations, where anglers can enjoy the Palisades Reservoir. "The lake and backdrop is beautiful and worth the visit. The clay quicksand-like ground close to the lake was fun to play in and explore!" notes Jeni N.
Boat rentals: Available at Colter Bay: Colter Bay Tent Village offers water recreation options with boat rentals. "Amazing lake right off the campground where you can swim and rent boats. Awesome spot, just couldn't get used to the number of people and price," explains Natalie B.
Mountain biking: Multiple trails accessible within 15 minutes of most cabin properties. "There are many great trails for bikes," shares suzy H. who stayed at Colter Bay. Rental equipment available in Victor for those without bikes.
What campers like
Private bathrooms with heating: Teton Valley Resort offers modern bathroom facilities that campers appreciate. "Large, clean, individual bathrooms with showers. They also appeared to be doing a lot of construction," notes Angela G., who visited during winter months.
Evening community activities: Organized campfires and social events at several properties. "They have little s'more bags that they give you and do little community bonfires each night," shares Amber W. about her experience at Teton Valley Resort.
Mountain views from premium cabins: Teton Peaks Resort features cabins with direct views of the Teton range. "We stayed the first night in the glamping tent 'Eagles rest.' We hiked close by the next day, ate in town, loved it so much we booked in last minute again cause we didn't want to leave," reports Janet D.
What you should know
Seasonal weather preparations: Cabins at higher elevations experience temperature drops overnight, even in summer. "We were thankful for the space heater that was in there. It got down to just above freezing that night," reports Janet D. about her May stay at Teton Peaks Resort.
Limited connectivity: Cell service varies by location, with stronger signals near Victor and weaker coverage in more remote cabin areas. WiFi access depends on property, with Headwaters Campground offering limited service. "Very limited Wi-fi that had to be accessed at the lodge reception area. No cell phone service. A courtesy phone is available at the lodge reception desk," explains Susan R.
Bathroom facilities: Cabin bathrooms range from none to full private facilities. "Clean bathrooms, super close proximity to the park and town, and quiet," reports Erin about her stay at Fireside Resort with her small campervan.
Tips for camping with families
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many cabins are located in areas with regular wildlife sightings. "We saw a bear. And there were obvious signs that the bears were in the area a lot. When we saw the bear near us there was also 3 rangers following it keeping the campers safe," shares Heather H. from her experience at Colter Bay.
Cabin availability strategy: Reserve 3-4 months in advance for summer stays, especially at Hover Camp where cabins fill quickly. "We needed a place to stay in our van for a few nights on our way to Grand Tetons. They also have large RV/camper spots, tent spots, and cabins. There's a play area for children too," notes Joey and Lauren T.
Food storage requirements: Bear-safe storage required at all cabins. "They ask to clean up your site each evening and put grill and coolers away so as to not attract the bears," explains Brenda L. about her experience at Headwaters Campground.
Tips from RVers
Road access considerations: Some cabin areas have narrow access roads. "The road is a bit narrow and rutted, but those confident in their driving skills will be fine," advises Katherine B. about reaching Indian Creek.
Hookup variations: RV sites with cabins nearby offer varying levels of service. "They rent cars on site which is really convenient. Only electric hook ups and cable tv. There was water available to fill your tanks and a dump station on site," advises David H. about Fireside Resort at Jackson Hole.
Winter access limitations: Mountain passes can be challenging for RVs accessing cabins in winter months. "If you visit in the winter, make sure to bring chains as this pass can get pretty rough," notes Angela G. about traveling to Teton Valley.
