Best RV Parks & Resorts near Gillett, WI

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks provide a range of camping options within driving distance of Gillett, Wisconsin. Mohican North Star RV Park accommodates big rigs with 50-amp electric and full hookups available April through November. Fawn Lake Campground features spacious sites with water, sewer, and electric connections, plus a small swimming pond on the property. "We have already booked for next year. We love the complete hook ups, no worries about electric, water or sewer," noted one camper about their experience. Tranquil Timbers Camping Resort in Sturgeon Bay operates seasonally from May through mid-October with full RV hookups, while Kewaunee RV & Campground offers similar amenities approximately 30 miles east of Gillett.

Throughout the region, most RV parks require reservations during peak summer months and fall color season. Sites are typically equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and access to shower facilities. A recent review highlighted the importance of checking specific site dimensions before booking, noting "very small spaces right by the road" at one location. While some campgrounds provide sanitary dump stations, not all facilities offer this service - confirming dump station availability before arrival is recommended. Full hookup sites generally command higher rates, though they eliminate the need for water tank management during longer stays. Many parks welcome pets but enforce leash rules and noise restrictions, with one reviewer cautioning about a campground that was "not pet friendly" despite advertising otherwise.

    Brown County Reforestation Campground

    Big rig friendly

Great place to stay! Big rig friendly! Gravel pads and each site comes with a picnic table and fire pit. Bathrooms in the campground were clean and I believe there were showers.

    Mapleview Campground

Joyce and Stan make this place an Oasis

What a great little spot to visit. They have many sites in the field or in the woods. Most with electric 30/50 amp and a beautiful lake with many family friendly things to do. The people are friendly and they have clean showers and bathrooms along with laundry.

    High Cliff State Park Campground

    Escarpment

Grew up near here and used to backpack across Lake Winnebago to winter camp and hike in January when the park was empty and no mosquitos to chew on my butt.

Indian Burial Mounds, old kilns, trails, hills, observation deck, sledding in winter, and lots of other things to do all year round.

This Park is actually on an escarpment that winds around Lake Michigan all the way to Niagara Falls. Limestone cliffs for climbing on, scenic.

in the summer the lake gets green with algae and there is a summer stretch wherever the lake flies hatch and get thick.

Good park for families. Close to small towns for resupply. Appleton & Green Bay are within striking distance as is Lake Michigan.

Bring arctic survival gear in January...subzero temps with wind chills in the negative teens is normal. Fantastic cross country skiing/snowshoeing.

    Peshtigo River Campground

Great for Families and a weekend getaway!

I grew up about 10 minutes away from this campground and it is still an awesome place to go when we are looking for a “staycation”!

It’s right by an elementary school so it’s a very safe area, across the road from an AMAZING playground that all ages will love, also about 50ft from a beach! The beach isn’t huge, and is open to the public so at times it gets crowded but is very safe and clean. The beach is on the peshtigo river and is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, jet skiing, and tubing! There is a boat launch less than half a mile towards town on the river that is open to the public! Also includes a skatepark!

There also are two pavilions on parks grounds, both covered. One is smaller on the beach and includes grills and tables, and the other one has a stage on it for performances!

This campground is a mix between RV’s and tenting so you get the best of both worlds! Forget some necessities? No Worries! You’re a 10 minuet drive from Walmart and within walking distance of a cafe and gas stations! There are bathrooms, water hook ups, picnic tables, fire pits, and parking.

(I unfortunately do not have any recent pictures because I lost all of them but google really does a great job of showing what I’m talking about!)

    Governor Thompson State Park Campground

    Private!

Park is located in the Peshtigo River state forest. Pet friendly!! Your pets are aloud on trails and with you at your campsite. They must be on a 6 ft leash. The park is beautiful. What surprised me the most was the pit toliets that looked like tiny houses. Pictures are attached. There is a small lake which is great for kayak and swimming. This park also has a boat launch onto the Cauldron Falls Reservoir. I've attached photos of the map. Almost all the campsites are private and hidden away in their own little spots. There are a few hiking trails which i enjoyed spending time on. If you go down the street a bit you will find Old Veterans state park which has a secluded quiet lake and beach. I spent an afternoon at the beach and never saw a soul. There is not a camp store. The only thing you can buy at the park is firewood.

Daisy Field Campground — Potawatomi State Park

    Costs keep rising

General: Located along Sturgeon Bay in the southern part of Door County, Potawatomi’s Daisy Field Campground is divided into two loops: north and south. In addition to paying the campsite fee, you need to pay a daily ($11) or annual ($38) for an out-of-state fee (slightly less for residents). The gate attendant tried to charge us for three days - we were camping for two nights but we convinced him this should not be the case. These additional fees are making private campgrounds much closer in cost and a bit more desirable. Note: you are near the Door County regional airport; we heard many planes in the early evening, but it quieted down later.

Site Quality/Facilities: 125 sites in two loops. Gravel pads except for the two handicap accessible sites in the south loop plus one handicap accessible cabin in the south loop. Be aware that in the south loop, many (but not all) of the even-numbered sites on the north side (10-46) slope upward and/or sideways while many of the odd-numbered sites (33-43) tend to slope downward. The sites on the south side of the loop appeared to be more level. Our site (40) was challenging for our camper van to find a level spot (it tended to slope sideways no matter what we did). Even-numbered sites in the north loop (86-102) appeared to be more level and they have a filtered bay view but they are right on the road. Each site has a fire ring and large picnic table; some are electric and some with no hook-ups. The sites are all wooded and there is reasonable separation between them. There is a nature center, camp store and sports rentals available between the two loops. Firewood is also available for $7 a bundle.

Bathhouse: There is only one bath/shower facility between the two loops which was not nearly adequate for 125 sites (this is not the first Wisconsin state park we’ve been in that has had only one bath house for the entire campground). It was reasonably clean, but it looked like their idea of cleaning was to blast it with a power hose as the floors, sinks, and toilets were extremely wet just after cleaning. The showers were ok, but you have to keep pressing the button every minute to keep the water flowing. There are several vault toilets – I saw two in the south loop and one in the north loop.

Activities/Amenities: Several hiking trails lead directly from the campground. We hiked the Ice Age Trail from the campground to the observation tower but were dismayed to discover it is permanently closed due to structural issues. There are sport rentals (bikes, kayaks, etc. available) which is a nice amenity.

Don’t get me wrong – we enjoyed our stay here but with state parks increasing their costs (especially for non-residents), it was only $7 less to stay here in a tent site than it did at the private campground we stayed at the previous night with more amenities and cleaner/more modern bathrooms.

    High Cliff State Park Campground

    Family Camping at High Cliff

I took my family and my brother’s family for a weekend of camping the weekend of October 23, 24 and 25. Apparently there is an annual trick or treating activity that takes place with the RVs in the campground. It was an unexpected surprise that my kids loved.

The sites themselves were gorgeous because of the fall foliage. They were a bit close to the RV sites which were all alight with Halloween decorations. And there were people partying for most of the night, it was a little loud until about 1 AM.

The hiking was so much fun. The Lime Kiln Ruins were a sight to see for the kids and the path was full of fantastic cliffs for the kids. For me, too.

I have to admit that the weather was cold and overcast. I camped with one child under 10 and she had a hard time with the cold weather at night. The nighttime temps dropped under 30 degrees both nights, it got cold!!! She was a champ, tho.

We had a great time and will visit again.

Guide to Gillett

Camping options around Gillett, Wisconsin include areas for both tent and RV camping within a region characterized by the northern hardwood forests of the Nicolet National Forest. The area sits at approximately 800 feet elevation with summer temperatures averaging in the mid-70s and cooler nights in the 50s. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from May through October, closing during Wisconsin's harsh winter months.

What to do

Water activities on Boulder Lake: Boulder Lake Campground offers swimming in a sandy-bottomed lake that isn't very deep, making it ideal for families. "The lake is super clean, the sites are very nice, and it's nice and secluded," notes camper Brandon L. The shallow shore is particularly good for casual swimmers and paddlers.

River tubing adventures: Peshtigo River Campground provides tube rentals for $14 per person with cooler floats available for $8, including bus transportation to the launch point. "They have trips to tube down the river," shares Jill G., while another camper reports, "We waited for about 40 minutes for the bus. Once the bus came, everyone piled on. We had our own tubes so we put them on ourselves as well as our cooler."

Outdoor recreation beyond water: Access to hiking trails, parks, and outdoor activities makes Boulder Lake a versatile destination. "Boulder lake is amazing and is located conveniently close to the Wolf river, which has whitewater rafting and trout fishing," writes Christopher R. The campground connects to trails in the Nicole National Forest for hiking opportunities.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathhouses and shower facilities across multiple campgrounds. At Peshtigo River Campground, visitors appreciate "some of the cleanest bathrooms we've ever found," according to Mike W. Similarly, at Boulder Lake, Julia B. notes, "Shower house was nice and clean."

Family-friendly amenities: Multiple campgrounds offer recreational facilities specifically designed for children and families. Tayah H. describes the Peshtigo River area as "right by an elementary school so it's a very safe area, across the road from an AMAZING playground that all ages will love, also about 50ft from a beach!" The area includes pavilions with grills and picnic tables.

Peaceful atmosphere: Campers value the quiet environment at River Forest Campground. "Rustic, peaceful and quiet," writes John G., while Crystal H. calls it a "Phenomenal views, family friendly, accommodating and peaceful" destination. Seasonal sites often offer additional privacy and space.

What you should know

Limited dump stations: Not all campgrounds provide sewer hookups or dump stations. At Countryside Motel & RV Sites, a reviewer cautions, "NO DUMP STATION AT ALL. No garbage dumpster. Water and electric only. I thought they had to have a dump station by law to be an rv park." Always confirm waste disposal options before arrival.

Size restrictions and site variations: At Fawn Lake Campground, the layout provides different camping experiences based on location. "The tent sites at this camp ground are in the back of the campground located in the woods," explains Rachel C., providing better privacy for tent campers compared to RV sites.

Operating seasons: Most RV campgrounds near Gillett operate seasonally. Mohican North Star RV Park runs from April 1 to November 1, Tranquil Timbers operates May 1 to mid-October, and Kewaunee RV & Campground is open May 1 to October 1. Winter camping options are extremely limited in this region.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with accessible water features. Fawn Lake Campground offers "a small pond with in the campground which you are able to swim in, kayak in and go frogging in," according to Rachel C., while McKenna R. adds, "They have a nice pond for swimming and a playground right by it for the kids."

Budget-friendly alternatives: Consider state parks as lower-cost alternatives to private RV parks. One camper at Tranquil Timbers notes, "I'd just assume go to Peninsula State Park instead for a much better camping experience for a small fraction of the price." State parks typically have fewer amenities but offer natural settings at reduced rates.

Activity-centered campgrounds: Some campgrounds specialize in recreational programming. Crystal H. shares that at River Forest Campground, "We took our 3 girls there this last week for their very first time camping. The kids got to sing karaoke and go tubing among many other activities."

Tips from RVers

Electrical service variations: RV campgrounds in Gillett region offer different electrical capabilities. John G. reports about River Forest, "The site has water and 20 amp electric service, the power is substantial to power the necessities." Always check amperage before booking if you have specific electrical requirements.

Road noise considerations: When selecting an RV site, consider proximity to highways. David V. notes about Maple Heights Campground, "Busy highway noise all night. Showers pool mini-golf. No lake river or fishing." Sites further from main roads typically provide a quieter experience.

Site spacing and privacy: Many rv campgrounds near Gillett, Wisconsin have varying site sizes. Jennifer G. at Kewaunee RV & Campground observed, "The sites are a little small but the hospitality of the owners/hosts ensure that we'll be back." At Peshtigo River Campground, Kelli V. had a different experience: "We thought we had a small site- until we got there. Site 86 is the smallest on the map but it is not small at all!"
