Daisy Field Campground — Potawatomi State Park

      Costs keep rising

General: Located along Sturgeon Bay in the southern part of Door County, Potawatomi’s Daisy Field Campground is divided into two loops: north and south. In addition to paying the campsite fee, you need to pay a daily ($11) or annual ($38) for an out-of-state fee (slightly less for residents). The gate attendant tried to charge us for three days - we were camping for two nights but we convinced him this should not be the case. These additional fees are making private campgrounds much closer in cost and a bit more desirable. Note: you are near the Door County regional airport; we heard many planes in the early evening, but it quieted down later.

Site Quality/Facilities: 125 sites in two loops. Gravel pads except for the two handicap accessible sites in the south loop plus one handicap accessible cabin in the south loop. Be aware that in the south loop, many (but not all) of the even-numbered sites on the north side (10-46) slope upward and/or sideways while many of the odd-numbered sites (33-43) tend to slope downward. The sites on the south side of the loop appeared to be more level. Our site (40) was challenging for our camper van to find a level spot (it tended to slope sideways no matter what we did). Even-numbered sites in the north loop (86-102) appeared to be more level and they have a filtered bay view but they are right on the road. Each site has a fire ring and large picnic table; some are electric and some with no hook-ups. The sites are all wooded and there is reasonable separation between them. There is a nature center, camp store and sports rentals available between the two loops. Firewood is also available for $7 a bundle.

Bathhouse: There is only one bath/shower facility between the two loops which was not nearly adequate for 125 sites (this is not the first Wisconsin state park we’ve been in that has had only one bath house for the entire campground). It was reasonably clean, but it looked like their idea of cleaning was to blast it with a power hose as the floors, sinks, and toilets were extremely wet just after cleaning. The showers were ok, but you have to keep pressing the button every minute to keep the water flowing. There are several vault toilets – I saw two in the south loop and one in the north loop.

Activities/Amenities: Several hiking trails lead directly from the campground. We hiked the Ice Age Trail from the campground to the observation tower but were dismayed to discover it is permanently closed due to structural issues. There are sport rentals (bikes, kayaks, etc. available) which is a nice amenity.

Don’t get me wrong – we enjoyed our stay here but with state parks increasing their costs (especially for non-residents), it was only $7 less to stay here in a tent site than it did at the private campground we stayed at the previous night with more amenities and cleaner/more modern bathrooms.

      Tranquil Timbers

      NOT PET FRIENDLY

Tranquil Timbers advertises pet friendly but they ARE NOT pet friendly. If your dog makes any kind of noise whatsoever, they are NOT welcome. Motorcycles and noisy kids however, park approved!

Harbour Village Campground & Water Park

      “Rustic” tent camping

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the “Rustic” tent camping site. We were the only people that camped over the weekend in the Rustic area. It was a very nice set up. Secluded and far away from any RV campers.

Our only complaint was that there was a HUGE party at the RV sites. Music blasting so loud from 7pm - 11:30pm. (Quiet hours are from 11pm - 8am) so that was really frustrating, especially when we were just trying to get away from city life and enjoy our campfire.

Harbor Village is the perfect location for Door County. It’s nestled next to Door County Coffee, Winery, and Brewery. Plus all of the site seeing is within an hour or two.

      The amenities were nice.

Other than the noisy neighbors, we enjoyed our time at Harbor Village. When we visit Door County, we will most likely stay here again.

      High Cliff State Park Campground

Close to town but surrounded by nature.

This is a state run campground that provides plenty of hiking, biking and horse riding trails. There is also access to Lake Winnebago for boating and swimming. The camp sites are all either partially or fully shaded with a good amount of privacy for each site. Plenty or pit toilets are provided and there are also plumbed toilets and showers available on the campground.

This campground is perfect for a weekend getaway or for those families just starting out. It is close enough to town to be able to run in and get forgotten items. There are plenty of playground equipment for kids to run and climb on. If you are looking for a rustic get away this may not be exactly what you are looking for but it is a great spot to get out of the city for a day or two.

      Peshtigo River Campground

Great for Families and a weekend getaway!

I grew up about 10 minutes away from this campground and it is still an awesome place to go when we are looking for a “staycation”!

It’s right by an elementary school so it’s a very safe area, across the road from an AMAZING playground that all ages will love, also about 50ft from a beach! The beach isn’t huge, and is open to the public so at times it gets crowded but is very safe and clean. The beach is on the peshtigo river and is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, jet skiing, and tubing! There is a boat launch less than half a mile towards town on the river that is open to the public! Also includes a skatepark!

There also are two pavilions on parks grounds, both covered. One is smaller on the beach and includes grills and tables, and the other one has a stage on it for performances!

This campground is a mix between RV’s and tenting so you get the best of both worlds! Forget some necessities? No Worries! You’re a 10 minuet drive from Walmart and within walking distance of a cafe and gas stations! There are bathrooms, water hook ups, picnic tables, fire pits, and parking.

(I unfortunately do not have any recent pictures because I lost all of them but google really does a great job of showing what I’m talking about!)

Daisy Field Campground — Potawatomi State Park

Great State Park Campground Near Town

Overall this camp was a great experience. There are nice trails that run by the water. The sites were nice with fire ring, table and bench. The sites were near one another but vegetation between to give some barrier. The mosquitoes were pretty heavy in late July. There was one shower house that seemed to be pretty busy most of the time. There was also a child's playground with lots of space. Overall it was a great place to visit and check out the area.

      High Cliff State Park Campground

Nice state park with lots to do

We went to High Cliff over the 4th of July, so it was quite busy.

We booked sites 22 and 23 which are a double site. Pretty good space, we were able to fit 4 tents and a sleeping hammock. There is overflow parking directly across from the site. There is a main hiking trail behind the sites, but right beyond that are some nice rock formations. A short walk down that path is to a nice look out, especially for sunset.

The beach was very busy, but it was a holiday weekend. There is a large grassy area above the beach with grills and picnic tables. The water at the beach was very mucky when we were there.

The marina was nice. We didn’t have a problem parking. The water was very choppy, so we didn’t stay out long.

There are some nice trails. We saw a lot of families with bikes. The park is also very close to a town with a grocery store (Dicks Family Foods) if you need to stock up. We had a fish fry in town which was delicious!

      High Cliff State Park Campground

So much to do for everyone

No matter what your skill level you can find a trail here from easy to challenging to hike or bike.  There is a beach, a marina, Lake Winnebago, horse trails, hiking, biking and pet beach and picnic area.  The park is very clean and pretty.  There is a playground, several vault toilet areas spread around and a shower house.   Some sites have electric and there is a dump station and water fill up.

Both AT &T and Verizon provided good service and the ability to stream.  Spaces are large and have many  trees for shade and privacy.

    Guide to Gillett

Cabin accommodations near Gillett, Wisconsin offer year-round options within the dense forests of Oconto County. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing from December through February, while summer daytime highs typically reach the mid-70s. Most cabin rentals in this area require advanced booking during the peak summer months when humidity levels increase and thunderstorms are common.

    What to do

Water recreation opportunities: At Chute Pond Park, visitors can enjoy multiple water activities. "The fishing is fantastic. Even a place to ride a tube down a lazy river," notes Jeremy B. The park also offers kayak rentals at $20 per hour as of 2024.

Hiking trails: The region features numerous hiking paths with varying difficulty levels. "Nice hiking trails were clean and nice," reports Jeremy B. about Chute Pond Park trails. Another visitor mentions, "One trail leads to a scenic overlook and another leads to slippery rock. Slippery Rock is a waterfall from the river that you can actually slide down."

Riverside activities: Tilleda Falls Campground provides water-based recreation on the Embarrass River. "On the Embarrass River, a lovely small cascading falls and swimming area," writes Mary P. The campground combines fishing opportunities with swimming areas and waterfall views.

    What campers like

Secluded woodland sites: River Forest Campground offers private cabin locations. "Sites are very spaced out, group sites can accommodate up to 30 people per site," explains Amy A. The campground maintains separation between sites, creating a more private cabin experience.

Family-friendly amenities: Cabin guests appreciate kid-focused facilities. At Diamond Lake Family Campground, "kids had so much fun with the water chute and inflatables," according to Jennifer G. The campground provides various water features specifically designed for children.

Convenience stores: Most cabin locations maintain on-site shops for essentials. "They have a convenience store that magically has anything anyone may ever forget for peace of mind that you won't have to leave your secluded nature sanctuary," states a River Forest Campground reviewer. These stores typically stock basic camping supplies, food items, and firewood.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Book cabins well in advance, especially for summer weekends. According to a Diamond Lake visitor, "As a privately owned campground, they take their rules and security seriously to make sure their campground is safe, clean, fun, and quiet."

Site selection: Different cabin locations offer varying levels of privacy and amenities. "The site we booked was very level and spacious for our toy hauler," notes Emily W. about Tilleda Falls Campground. When booking, ask specific questions about site size and features.

Seasonal considerations: Many cabin facilities operate from May through October only. "Clean showers used their services to get a tubing trip in on Peshtigo River," reports Lula L. about Peshtigo River Campground. Check opening dates when planning early or late season trips.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated kid areas: Choose cabin locations with specific children's amenities. Pine Grove Campground offers "a kid-friendly pool, arcade, park, and bounce house area that our group of kids loved," according to Andrew C.

Consider noise levels: Family-oriented cabins may have scheduled activities. "If you're too close [to the office], the dance parties that they host can get a bit loud, but are still fun for the kids to drain some energy," advises Joe W. regarding Pine Grove Campground.

Plan for weather changes: Northeast Wisconsin weather can change quickly. "Coming was great. Needs some improvements on the hiking areas," notes a visitor to Potawatomi State Park, suggesting that some trails become difficult during wet weather.

    Tips from RVers

Utility access varies: Electric service differs between campgrounds. At Badger Park Campground, "Great antenna coverage and T Mobile signal," reports Barbara P. Not all cabins provide full utility hookups.

Spacing considerations: RV sites with cabins offer different privacy levels. "Large sites, trash cans at site which was a treat!" comments Barbara P. about Badger Park. Verify site dimensions when booking larger vehicles.

Early arrival recommended: Many campgrounds have specific check-in windows. "We had a wonderful time, there is so much to do here you don't need to leave the park," states Karyn S. about High Cliff State Park Campground. Arrive during office hours to ensure proper check-in.
