Merrick State Park Campground welcomes pets throughout its varied camping areas including South Campground with riverside sites, the Island sites offering maximum privacy, and North Campground with electrical hookups. Leashed pets are permitted on all designated campsites and trails but must be attended at all times. The campground features multiple water access points ideal for dogs who enjoy swimming, though the shoreline consists primarily of large riprap rocks that can be challenging for pet entry. Sites range from primitive walk-in tent spots to RV-compatible sites with electric hookups. Prairie Island City Campground also accommodates pets with spacious riverfront sites and is located across from a dedicated dog park where pets can run off-leash while supervised. Both campgrounds provide clean restroom facilities, though campers report varying cleanliness levels depending on time of day. Sites at Merrick fill quickly during peak season despite frequent train noise that some pets may find disturbing.

The Mississippi River backwaters provide excellent opportunities for dog-friendly kayaking and canoeing, with multiple boat launches available at Merrick State Park. Turtle crossings are common throughout the park, requiring extra vigilance when walking dogs on trails or roadways. During summer months, mosquitoes can be problematic for both humans and pets, so appropriate repellents are essential. The South Campground at Merrick offers the most direct water access for pets, while Prairie Island features grassy tent sites suitable for pets who prefer softer ground. Both locations experience seasonal flooding that can affect site availability. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound with eagles commonly spotted overhead, though this also means pets should remain secured to avoid wildlife confrontations. Temperature extremes during summer and fall should be considered when planning overnight stays with pets, particularly at sites with limited shade coverage.

Island Campground — Merrick State Park

Island Campground With Incredible Water Access

Second stay, first review of Merrick.  We have always reserved an Island site, since they offer the best privacy from neighbors in southern camp along the Mississippi backwaters on Fountain City Bay.  We always bring the kayaks, so the water access offered is why we stay.

      3 Campgrounds:

       - Island sites offer the best-in-park privacy for a campsite, but they are walk in (carts provided for hauling in).  Worth the short walk in from the lot for what you get. We think site 50 has the best view and launch, with not as much riprap as the other island sites, but you can make any of them work.

       - South Campground sites are closer together with fewer trees, but still offer a front row seat to the Friday evening boat show. Many sites have pretty good direct water access here too

       - North campground has electric and showers/flush toilets, access to water, but no water views

      Notes to self:

       - Bring your bugspray or thermocell, we definitely needed protection.

       - I grew up in a train town, so I loved hearing the trains in the distance, but if you were up at North camp, it would indeed be really loud.

       - Porto-pots were passible but not great.  Watch for spidies.

      Prairie Island City Campground

      Nice for RV Camping

If you are a tent camper, I would suggest going to local nearby state parks vs. this campground. Nice for a quick weekend away in an RV. On the Mississippi River and close to town. Across the street from a dog park so if you bring your fur-friend with, there is a nice enclosed area for them to run while being supervised.

      Maple Springs Campground

      Eden

We stayed here for the month of august, and this place is awesome! Beautiful spaces of various size, a river runs next to it and they have duck races. Dog park, small general store, backs up to a national park, close to town, immaculately maintained, volley ball court, lots of shade trees, easy access, and Andy(owner/operator) is the nicest person you’ll ever want to meet. For those so inclined there’s church service on Sunday in an old (cool looking!) barn! Fire pits at every spot. There is WiFi there, but little to no phone service unless you have a cell booster. 5/5 will definitely be back!

      Sleepy Hollow Campground

looking for a quiet place to recharge this is the place for you

We ran across a little camp ground called Sleepy Hollow Campground W922 Lower Eagle Valley Road, Fountain City, WI. 54629(609) 687-8351 This is one of the nicest places we have found. It is not marked on RV Trip Wizard or any others that we could find. I found it by accident through Google Maps. It looked like what a campground would look like from the air and by querying the address I found the name of the campground called Sleepy Hollow. They do not advertise and it is a small camp with little amnesties. It has a shower house with restrooms and a laundry. They are clean and well maintained. They have 13 pull through sites 80” in length and very wide with full hook-ups, eight back in sites with just water and Electric. And tent sites as well. It is on a quiet road called Lower Eagle Valley Rd. It is set in a valley with 3 to 4 hundred foot hills full of trails on a working farm. About a mile from the Mississippi just north of lock and dam no. 5A if you are looking for a quiet place to recharge this is the place for you. This is a camping site where there are adults, not designed for kids.

      Eagle Cliff Campground and Lodging

      Perfect set-up

This campground has it all. Situated right along the Root River next to the bike trail. They offer kayak, canoe and tube rentals and shuttles. They also have bike rentals.

This facility is clean and very well kept. Even the shower rooms are very nice and sanitary.

This is by far my favorite camping spot. I would recommend this place to any and everyone. Family orientated and pet friendly.

    What campers like

Train noise levels vary by loop: Train tracks run near several campgrounds in the region. At Merrick State Park, Patrick M. observes, "I grew up in a train town, so I loved hearing the trains in the distance, but if you were up at North camp, it would indeed be really loud."
