    Rifrafters Campground

Great folks just not our preferred type of campground

Amy and I spent the Labor Day Weekend in Fayetteville, WV. The New River Gorge area is amazing. We camped at Rifrafters Campground. It is family owned and operated. The owners were great and made a point to stop by our site and see how we were doing. The campground is clean, well maintained and conveniently located. It is only about 7 minutes from the New River Bridge welcome center.

There were several long term campers, sites were very small and close together. Fire ring and picnic table ended up under our awning. Water, electric and cable service and a few sites had sewer. Campground WiFi was weak at our site (#27).

While this was a positive stay, we prefer State Parks versus RV campgrounds.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

    Little Beaver State Park Campground

    Little Beaver State Park

Little Beaver State Park is a lovely little park just off Interstate 64 between Beckley and White Sulfur Springs. It has 16 sites with water and 30 sites with both electric and water. Some of the sites are pull throughs which could accommodate big rigs. There is a dump station available. There is a very nice shower house as well. Check out the website for more information.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

    Great Way to Getaway

The Breaks are considered the “Grand Canyon of the south”. Great mountaintop views, hiking, geocaching, kayaking, paddle boats, a zip line, and seasonal white water rafting all available. A few miles from the campground you’ll even find river access with a sandy beach for summer fun. A wonderful getaway when you want to be away from it all. Several campground sections to choose from with primitive sites to full hookup with electric, water, and sewer. Dump stations are available also. There are laundry facilities and bathhouses (didn’t use either so not sure on condition), playgrounds, picnic shelters, cabins, and inns. Each campsite had a fire ring and picnic table. Spots are definitely not level, so bring a variety of blocks—you’ll need them. No outside lights at the sites so when it’s dark it’s d-a-r-k. Beautiful campground.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

Nice Campground, Challenging to get to.

Nice Campground, once you get here. The roads to this amazing State Park are two lane and twisting. We have a 38' 5er and a CrewCab Dually tow vehicle. We didn't have a lot of issues getting here but it is quite mountainous with a lot of climbs to get here. The Park is well appointed and the campsites are nice for a state park. Be careful when choosing a site as some are challenging to get into with larger units. We had a pull through which was big enough for our rig. Sites are gravel and spacious. Fire ring/grill combo provided at each site. Bathhouses were clean and well stocked. Be sure to bring all necessary supplies BEFORE you get here, nearest stores are a 20 minute drive away on crooked mountain roads. Will we return? Maybe for a special event but not for a general getaway

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

Needs to be updated and repaired

Roads in campground are rough in places. Electrical boxes are in rough shape at some sites. 30 amp kept tripping the breaker. WiFi does not work. Several sites have full hookup but sewer hookups need to be repaired and water hookups are far away.

    Lake Stephens Campground

    Popular summer camper location.

Lake Stephens Campground is a popular location for residents of Beckley (and surrounding areas) to park their RV’s/campers, for extended periods of time, as an easy getaway. The RV/camper area consists of a large circle of campsites that are very close to each other. The common area in the middle has a playground, restroom/showers, vending machines and some field area to play. The RV area seems to have grown into a very friendly community. They have regularly scheduled events like movie night, and they even host a “trick-or-treat” event each year that attracts hundreds. Amongst other things, the park has picnic areas, a beach with a sectioned off swimming area, a small water park area, and several hiking trails.

Guide to Logan

Camping options near Logan, West Virginia include tent sites and RV spaces scattered throughout the forested terrain of southern West Virginia. The region's elevation ranges from 600 to 1,600 feet, creating varied camping environments across the area. Many locations operate year-round with modified winter services, though some remote sites have limited cell service regardless of season.

What to do

Hiking opportunities: At New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Army Camp Campground offers quick access to riverside trails. "Though all campground trails are short and directly to the edge of the New River...innumerable trails are a short drive away," notes visitor Dave V. at Army Camp.

Fishing access: The Kanawha River boat ramp near Saint Albans provides easy river access for anglers. "The park also has a public boat ramp which is part of the Port of St. Albans. The ramp gives you direct access to the Kanawha River," explains Jennifer B., who camped at Saint Albans Roadside Park.

Off-road adventures: Many travelers use campgrounds as bases for ATV trail exploration. "Close to Hatfield McCoy off-road/ATV trails but there are other things to do in the area," reports camper J.A. who stayed at Backwoods Camping & RV Park.

Coal mining history: Learn about regional industrial heritage by visiting nearby historical sites. "Check out some of the mining history at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, about 30 minutes away," suggests Jean C. who visited Army Camp Campground.

What campers like

River proximity: Many campgrounds feature waterfront locations or nearby water access. At Saint Albans Roadside Park, reviewer Sofia A. notes, "I arrived and found the dump station and filled my water tank with potable water," highlighting the practical amenities at this riverside location.

Affordability: Budget-friendly camping options exist throughout the region. "Several cabins, RV spots and grassy tent areas. The staff are very easy to work with - they will sell and chop the wood you need, let you put your tent in any of the open grass areas around the lot," explains J.A. about their stay at Backwoods Camping & RV Park.

Helpful staff: Many campgrounds in the Logan area receive praise for hospitable service. "Host John is above and beyond. His level of service was next level and was happy to offer suggestions for food, etc. Made sure I had everything and when bad weather was coming through, he made sure I was aware and safe," mentions Tara R. about Hilltop Sunrise.

Secluded camping spots: Campers seeking privacy can find quieter options outside main camping areas. "Up front is a regular campground but we are in the back, secluded and peaceful. Site 34. There are about 8 nice sites out back with water and electricity," shares Larry M. about his experience at Rifrafters Campground.

What you should know

Road conditions: Many campground access roads present challenges for larger vehicles. "After you get off the highway expect narrow twists and turns to reach the park," warns Angelo V. about Kanawha State Forest, adding "the park itself isn't nearly as bad as the stretch between highway and park entrance."

Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience environmental or transportation noise. "You are literally about 20 yards from the main road, which is the only negative thing with road noise. On the other side is the Kanawha River," explains Andrew S. about Saint Albans Roadside Park.

Seasonal variations: Weather impacts site conditions significantly throughout the year. "After a night of rainfall, the New River has swollen beyond its boundaries by 50 feet or more on either shoreline," observes Dave V., highlighting how quickly conditions can change at riverside campgrounds.

Cell reception: Digital connectivity varies widely across the region. "Don't expect to have signal. I'm on Tmobile and I had an occasional bar. Starlink worked alright if I aimed it properly through the trees," notes Angelo V. about Kanawha State Forest.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. "There is a fenced in playground that is very nice. If you're a boater there is a boat slip a hundred yards away to get onto the Kanawha River," explains Andrew S. about Saint Albans Roadside Park.

Safety considerations: Family-friendly campgrounds typically offer secure environments. "Safe place - no issues with safety or security while we were there," notes J.A. about Rifrafters Campground, which received similar safety feedback from multiple visitors.

Water safety awareness: Rivers in the area require careful monitoring, especially with children. "Caution: Use extreme prudence if choosing to enter the New River itself. This is an incredibly popular whitewater rafting and paddling river...currents are fast, powerful and dangerous," warns Dave V. about Army Camp Campground.

Activity options: Family camping improves with access to diverse recreation. "The playground was great for our daughters to burn off some energy," shares Melissa O. about her stay at Rifrafters, mentioning this alongside the campground's helpful staff and comfortable sites.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV campers should prepare for variable parking conditions. "Some sites are better than others! Our site was very hilly and the picnic table and fire pit were a bit treacherous to get to," reports Jacqueline K. about her stay at Kanawha State Forest.

Hookup variations: RV camping near Logan offers diverse utility connections. "The site was right next to the road, had electric, water & sewer hook-up and was easy no hassle camping," explains Randy & T. about their experience at Hilltop Sunrise.

Size restrictions: Larger RVs face limitations at some area campgrounds. "The sites did hold a bit of water after a strong rain, be prepared if bad weather is expected," notes Jason G. about Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park, one of the few parks that can accommodate larger rigs.

Overnight options: RVers passing through find convenient stopover locations. "This was a nice stop. Fairly quiet with the exception of an annoying dog that barked incessantly," reports SkywaystoHighways.com Y. about Kanawha State Forest, which serves as both a destination and transit camp.
