Granite Creek courses north into the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River, between Russian Butte to the east and Mailbox Peak to the west. The stream surges swiftly through the gorge between those mountains, and the roar of whitewater rapids dominates the valley.

      Overview

Wenatchee Guard Station, located about 40 miles southeast of Pomeroy, offers a panoramic view of Wenatchee Creek and access to a scenic drive along Wenatchee Creek Canyon. The year-round cabin attracts cross country skiers and snowmobilers in winter and horseback riders and hikers in summer. Dogs and horses are allowed at the cabin. The site is accessible by automobile June 1 to November 1, weather dependant. Winter access requires skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles. As early as the 1910s, the site was used as a Forest Guard Camp. In 1927, a log cabin was built and used until it was replaced with the current guard station, completed in 1935 by the Civil Conservation Corps.

      Recreation

Horseback riding and hiking trails can be accessed from the cabin. Another way to enjoy views along Wenatchee Creek is by taking a scenic drive. Berry and mushroom picking is possible, and in winter, trails are groomed for snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

      Natural Features

Wenatchee Guard Station sits at 5290 ft in a grassy clearing on a high plateau dotted with mixed conifers, offering majestic views of the northern tip of the Blue Mountains. In the spring, wildflowers, such as yarrow, Piper's anemone, Big-leaf sandwort, Showy Aster, Camas pink fairy, daisy and sagebrush sweep color down the slopes into the valleys.Campers enjoy the view of Grouse Flats and look for herds of Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer. They can also listen for the call of geese, ducks, hawks, grouse, wild turkeys, screech owls and wrens.

      Nearby Attractions

The cabin is about 35 minutes from any general store. The town of Pomeroy has a county museum, art gallery and antiques.

        Lovely lake!

This campground worked great for our small teardrop trailer. It wasn’t the quietest campground we’ve stayed in, but people were respectful of the quiet hours. Sites were clean. Restrooms were acceptable. Last several miles of the road were very washboard-y - something that has not changed from previous visits over the years.

        Beautiful View, Long Hike

Trailhead view is beautiful. Hike is down to the Snake River, which is over 5 miles each way. Major elevation change. Parking is free for up to 48 hours. No amenities. Small store and restaurant nearby.

        Easy access RV park

All paved parking spots and easy to access! Only downside is having to walk the dogs across the parking lot to go to the bathroom in the grass, but it’s nice to have the grass! Dog poo bags and trash cans available.

        Great trip

A group of friends and I went and tent camped in spot 14 for a couple days and had a great time. The site was fairly trashed when we got there so we did some cleanup but besides that it’s surrounded by a beautiful forest and even on a 95 degree day the shade is perfect and the water was refreshing to swim in. I liked the spot we stayed in, it was spacious enough for 3 tents (10 person, 5 person, and 2 person tents) it was shaded and fairly spaced out from other spots. The lake was pretty busy and there were lots of people but it’s easy to find places on the water to have to yourself. There was also an awesome rope swing maybe half a mile from the camp site, super fun!

        Smoke free Casino

I didn't stay the night, and I'm not a gambler, but I did stop in just to have a look. This was the first casino I have ever been to that didn't gag me with cigarette smoke the minute I walked in the door.

        Racist staff

The management is incompetent. Catherine Thagard is claims policies that are not written and informs customers upon arrival. They threaten you, their male management is racist and aggressive. They bend their "rules" and policies dependent on "who" you are. Most importantly, they treat their employees horribly. Only stay here if you want to fund a racist, masaginistic company that abuses their staff

        Gorgeous on the water

Super pretty, gets real cold at night. Very convenient stop between pullman/moscow and clarkston/lewiston. The wildlife is very loud and very curious so bring earplugs if your sensitive to noise. Very clean, will absolutely be going again.

This is a beautiful and quiet campground

We were there in mid March, the only ones there at the time. There are seven campsites total, three can be accessed with an RV, we did ok with a 27' travel trailer, but I wouldn't recommend going there with anything larger. the rest of the sites would be tent only. There is a clean outhouse, no water or garbage service.  We will stay there again.

        North Thomason Meadows

Wildflowers, raptors, beautiful views at the top of Imnaha Canyon

I recommend this section of Wallowa-Whitman NF Rd 46 (4600) between Thomason Meadow Guard Station and Buckhorn Lookout because it is grazed less than surrounding areas, and thus has more plant diversity--i.e. great WILDFLOWER BLOOM in the spring. At 5000 feet, June to early July is a peak bloom time.

This is the top of the Imnaha River breaks, and you can see fully down into the BEAUTIFUL canyonlands of the Imnaha and Snake. Birdwatching was good for us out here too, especially raptors. One of the trailheads to the historic Nez Perce Nee -Me-Poo Trail is near this "Camp-1" dispersed spot.*

*One of our maps calls the marked spot "FSR 46 Camp-1," but the dispersed camp sites are all along NF Rd 46 from here north to Buckhorn.

The drive up to this area is well-maintained gravel, and an SUV with decent tires can do it. (We did it with a truck hauling a toy-hauler trailer). Bring all the water and supplies and tools you need--this area is REMOTE.

Take Crow Creek Rd off of Hwy 82 (btwn Enterprise and Joseph). All is paved until your intersection with Zumwalt Road, where you veer R to stay on Zumwalt (aka Zumwalt-Buckhorn Rd). It's gravel after that intersection.

Follow signs to Zumwalt Prairie or Buckhorn Lookout.

Crossing over Zumwalt Prairie is a GORGEOUS drive. The Nature Conservancy has their Zumwalt Prairie Preserve here, and it's a great side trip from the camp spot.

This section of NF-46 road is extremely quiet. Only the occasional ranch vehicle travels through. In fall this is a popular camp area for hunters.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of zero water, zero data, the ecosystem/soil that has been abused in the past (not wilderness), the 50-minute drive to WiFi/ restaurant/ water refill/ black water dump. But if I was comparing primitive camping to primitive camping, this would be a 5 of 5.

I would go back here (in late spring or early fall) in a heartbeat.

        Right on the river

Campground right on the river and surrounded by businesses but no noise issues.

Pull through site was paved and level. You do need a water pressure regulator. Office does suggest the route to take for easier pull in. Some of the long term campers have multiple cars and large add-ons, so was tricky getting out.

Showers were nice and plenty of room. Sign on indoor pool stated it was closed.

Check in was easy, they do offer food items for sale but the beverage coolers were pretty sparse.

        Beautiful, busy, and loud

Beautiful location, with the lake nestled in the trees. We enjoyed the hike around the lake, and the beautiful night sky. Unfortunately it is a very popular location, so if you’re looking for solitude you won’t find it here. Each campsite was full, and the parking lot was overflowing with day visitors (Friday and Saturday).

        Fantastic Layover

I was so happy to find this place when looking for a place to stay overnight with my horse. The facility has a perimeter gate as well as gates to each pasture (2). The fencing was nice metal panels between sturdy posts. There was Hotwire strung on the inside of the pasture in places to keep horses off the Arbor Vitae trees. Grass was mowed short and my horse could see another horse all night. He had a big water trough to drink from. The hosts checked on him and sent me updates through the evening while I was in town. I recommended them to others I met on my ride through the Lolo area. I was very impressed and happy with the experience.

        River tent camping

We stayed in one of the few tent spots on the water. The backdrop is stunning and the water is close enough falling asleep to it is relaxing. It’s a little small overall and would be cramped if the park was full.

        Family friendly oasis

We had so much fun here! The spots are roomy and grassy. There are several bathrooms on the property that were maintained daily over the weekend. There is potable water and garbage cans at nearly every other site. Dog friendly. There is a day use area with a gravel hike through the hills a canoe launch, fishing areas, tons of covered gazebos with bbqs at each, and a swing set. There is also a massive gazebo you can rent out with several bbqs, a sink, electrical outlets. We had so much fun and will definitely be back!
