    Grande Hot Springs RV Resort

Great relaxing campground with wonderful views

We've been here several times and will continue to visit. About a hundred pull through spots, full hookup. Relaxing informal campground with gravel roads and grass strips between sites. Level w easy entry/exit. Hot spring on site in wildlife preserve across the road. Many trains pass by about a quarter mile away and we didn't mind the relatively low noise trains. Interesting college town la grande nearby. Grand ronde River and Morgan lake are interesting

Don’t follow Google or you will drive on a rough gravel road for several miles

Approach the park from the La Grand/Baker Highway. One we arrived, we found the folks very nice. There were very few frees so shade is lacking. Ice is available at the park. The pool was open and refreshing. Full hooks available

    Hilgard Junction State Park Campground

    Wow what a surprise

Hilgard junction is a small 18 site campground just below highway 84 west of La Grande. It is right on the grande ronde river which was cool and peaceful when we were there. I am not sure many people know about this spot, I didn't and I have been driving by for 6 years now. Even if you are traveling through the day use area is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. Even though the freeway is about 60 yards away and up the hill the traffic noise was muted.

    Hilgard Junction State Park Campground

    Neat, Convenient, Busy

Hilgard Junction is a small, Riverside day use area, travel rest-stop and campground at the junction of I-84 and Highway 244 on the Grande Ronde river at the base of Mt. Emily.

This park is near La Grande, Oregon so if you are not just resting on your trip, you can run into a cute little university town to explore the Eastern Oregon local life.

Crystal clear water runs this high in the Grande Ronde, making for fun swimming and water play. Make sure to bring your gold pan to this shallow river bed, as it has been historically found all along this river. The RV park has no connections so bring your generator and solar panels with you. This is self contained type of camp, that provides two bathrooms and firewood.

It is an ADA friendly area with paved rv spots and designated well kept tent spots. Keep in mind this park is directly off of the interstate so there are a lot of random travelers coming and going at all hours of the day and night. One minor bit of awkwardness is that there is a youth correctional facility less than a mile up the road. So your traveling children maybe curious and ask odd questions if they see it.

    Moss Springs Campground

Quiet Campground on the Edge of the Eagle Cap

Moss Springs is a quiet campground on the edge of the Eagle Cap about 9 miles up the a forest service road from Cove, OR (which is about 14 miles past La Grande).

Most people use this campground for parking to hike into the Minam Lodge or to backpack into the Little Minam, or to park their trailer to ride their horses into the area, so there are plenty of people in and out, but not many people staying just for the campground.

The facilities are basic, picnic tables and fire rings at each site. There is also an area for livestock unloading and places for tying up your horses.

There isn't much around, but the road back to cove, while not paved, isn't bad, and there is a great mini mart right on main street where you can buy anything you forgot (including gas).

    A-Frame RV Park

    Friendly Front Desk Staff

Paid $44 for a night with full hookups. We appreciated the friendly staff. Dog Friendly with a 14 acres off-leash dog park! Washrooms were small but very clean. Even though it is 1 minute off the highway it was fairly quiet.

Fox Hill Campground by MERA Motocross Track

Fox Hill Campground – Thanksgiving Night Stay

We stayed at Fox Hill Campground over Thanksgiving night (driving from Hells Canyon), and it turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly peaceful stop. There aren’t many photos online, so I didn’t know exactly what we’d find, but the campground ended up being a real hidden gem.

The pull-in sites are huge — spacious enough for large vehicles, and there are only a handful of them which creates a quiet, uncrowded feel. Each site has benches, and the overlook of La Grande below is nothing short of enchanting, especially at night when the town lights shimmer in the distance.

Since it was the holiday, we were the only van campers in the entire area. The silence was incredible — no traffic, no other visitors, just the stillness of nature. Waking up to the soft sound of morning rain only added to the atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, roomy campsite with beautiful views and minimal distractions, Fox Hill Campground is absolutely worth it. Just be aware that it’s a primitive site with limited amenities — but if solitude and scenery are what you’re after, this place delivers. I only wish more photos existed online, because it truly deserves more attention.

Guide to La Grande

Camping opportunities near La Grande, Oregon include established campgrounds and dispersed sites within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Situated at approximately 2,800 feet elevation, the area experiences warm summers with temperatures reaching 85°F and cold winters with frequent snowfall. Many campgrounds remain open from April through October, with seasonal closures due to snowfall and road conditions.

What to Do

Mineral soaking pools: Grande Hot Springs RV Resort offers natural hot spring soaking pools with evening access. "The two hot spring fed soaking pools were open for 'twilight soak' until 11 PM which was a great touch after a long day on the road," notes Paul B.

Wildlife viewing: The camping areas provide opportunities to observe local fauna. At Pilcher Creek Reservoir, campers report diverse wildlife encounters. "Saw a ton of wildlife too (bring your bear spray)," advises Kennedy F., who stayed at this free campground about 25 minutes from the freeway.

Fishing access: Several campgrounds offer easy water access for anglers. At Bird Track Springs, campers can access the Grande Ronde River for fishing. "Crystal clear water runs this high in the Grande Ronde, making for fun swimming and water play. Make sure to bring your gold pan to this shallow river bed, as it has been historically found all along this river," reports Brandon K.

What Campers Like

Natural water features: Wallowa-Whitman NF 21 - Dispersed provides access to nearby streams. "Close spot from the highway for easy camping on a roadtrip! Open forest area spots, pretty quiet," says Rachel W. about this dispersed camping area that makes a convenient overnight stop.

Budget-friendly options: Free camping options exist within driving distance of La Grande. "Free camp site just a short drive from the interstate (~8 miles). Be aware the road leading to the camp is mostly gravel. The 16 sites are first come first serve," explains Julian R. about Pilcher Creek Reservoir.

Accessibility: Some campgrounds provide barrier-free access. "ADA friendly area with paved RV spots and designated well kept tent spots," mentions Brandon K. about Hilgard Junction State Park Campground, making it one of the more accessible pet-friendly camping areas near La Grande.

What You Should Know

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires navigation of unpaved roads. "If you approach the campsite from the East, be prepared for a bumpy road. The road from the West (LaGrande) is much better even if it takes you a few miles out of the way," advises Bill B. regarding access to Grande Hot Springs RV Resort.

Highway proximity: Some campgrounds experience road noise from nearby highways. "This is my favorite place to stop while travelling through along I84. It is so convenient being right next to the freeway. Only negative is that it's right next to the freeway so it's a little noisy but doesn't bother me," explains Brad C. about Hilgard Junction State Park Campground.

Seasonal limitations: Weather affects campground availability and conditions. "Pulled in and the site looked great and was in a very convenient location, however is closed for the season. Facilities all looked neat and tidy. Maybe next year!" notes Jacob B., highlighting the importance of checking seasonal closures.

Tips for Camping with Families

Educational opportunities: Some campsites offer learning experiences. "The Jr rangers program for the children was wonderful and hands on," shares Jenny M. about Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area, noting that "The park rangers were so nice. They had informed classes about animals in the forest."

Water play areas: Kids can enjoy various water activities at several campgrounds. "The nature trail along the creek was cool. Saw huge bull frogs, tadpoles, and fish. Also saw mule deer," reports Cheryl S. about her stay at Grande Hot Springs RV Resort.

Pet considerations: Many sites welcome dogs with specific amenities. "Light sleepers would have a hard time here due to highway noise but overall good rest stop. My dog wouldn't stop trying to eat all the horse poop around the camp site," notes Aspen S. about Wallowa-Whitman NF 21, one of several dog-friendly campgrounds near La Grande.

Tips from RVers

Site specifications: RV campers should note the varying site configurations. "The park is clean and flat," reports Bill B. about Grande Hot Springs RV Resort, while David M. mentions, "Very quiet wide open campground surrounded by snowy peaks. Full hookups at all sites, mostly 30 amp service but many sites have 50 amp also."

Maneuvering considerations: Some campgrounds present challenges for larger rigs. "Not for bigger rigs. 4 spots fairly close together, picnic tables, pit toilets. Loop in is tight, and while we are only 34' long, we're 13.8 on truck and had to do some creative maneuvering to get ourselves back out," warns Erin H. about Spring Creek Campground.

Hookup availability: Electrical service varies between campgrounds. "Big sites. Very nice staff and easy in and out," notes Kathy F. about La Grande Rendezvous RV Park, which offers full hookup sites that accommodate larger RVs.
