    Belle Isle State Park Campground

    BELLE ISLE STATE PARK

First time staying in a travel trailer at a state park. We booked the day of, because we were being indecisive, and there were a few spots available.

We came in after hours, and the guide at the entrance told us where to get our packet (from the kiosk in front of the camp store).

It’s very easy to find everything here, and the camp ground had both pull-throughs and back in spots. Plenty of separation between you and your neighbor for some privacy. No issues with the water/electric/dump station. Almost no cell service to speak of, but that’s the beauty of going to a place like this. Very kid and pet friendly. The community showers and bathrooms are very clean.

Lots of bugs and mosquitos. Plan accordingly.

Both the visitor center and camp store have plenty of souvenirs, but not much besides that. Just know, if you don’t plan well enough to bring something, you’ll be traveling 20-30 min out of your way to reach anything besides a gas station (nearest grocery store/Walmart is 25 min away).

Overall, it was a great first experience in our RV at this state park!

    American Heritage RV Park

Cannot Recommend for Big Rigs or Groups

We recently brought a group of ten campers to American Heritage RV Park because several of us had stayed there before and remembered it as a clean, well-kept park. Based on those positive experiences, we recommended it to our group and looked forward to sharing the campground with them. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet our expectations. Because sites are not assigned in advance, we could not choose sites that worked well for our group. Our 42-foot fifth wheel was placed in back-in site#136, which— like the other back-in sites— has a tree planted at the rear that prevents fully backing in. This left us very close to the road, with no way to park in front and no room to park alongside without blocking our steps. We first parked across the road in a grassy area but were told to move. When we parked in another group member’s pull-through site, we received a call saying two vehicles were not allowed— even though we observed several sites with two vehicles. The office directed us to the overflow lot near the front of the park, the farthest point from our site on the back row. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were told she works off-site. I emailed her asking her to visit our site, but she never responded. We were also told we could not put up a dog fence that extended onto the grass, though this rule was not posted anywhere. When booking months in advance, we requested that our sites be grouped near a cabin for one of our members— an 86-year-old woman in a wheelchair who requires oxygen. She was placed first in Cabin 5, then moved to Cabin 8 after a request for a larger and closer cabin. The second cabin was still far from our sites, down a hill and facing the woods in an unlit area, making it hazardous to reach at night, expecially for her. We also saw another camper with a rig identical to ours struggle to get into a back-in site, ultimately hitting a water faucet across the road, leaving the park without water for over two hours. These sites are simply not suitable for big rigs. While the park is clean, our overall experience was frustrating. Guests who book early, provide rig sizes, and pay for extended stays should reasonably expect sites that accommodate their camper and tow vehicle, and that group requests would be honored when possible. Large rigs should be cautious— the back-in sites are tight and maneuvering is difficult. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I cannot recommend American Heritage RV Park.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great RV Resort

We picked Americamps because we were traveling through the Richmond area and it was very convenient to I-95. We usually pass up on RV parks because most are wide open fields with large trailers and/or motor homes parked close together and prefer more private camp spots in out teardrop. But upon our arrival we were happily surprised. Amricamps has mostly full hook up sites (about 2/3 pull through sites and a 1/3 back in) and a small tent area with a handful of sites. While the sites were close together in typical RV park style, they were not scrapping together like we’ve seen at some places and there were many well established trees to provide lots of share instead of being in an open field. All the sites were level, most were gravel, but some were concrete pads. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Hook ups also included cable with about 70 channels.

Check-in was easy and the staff was very helpful. Check-in is at noon, but our road trip got us there about 11:20 and the staff had no problem letting us in early. Thanks! A host guides you to your site and assist you in positioning if needed. The campground is gated and you are provided a gate code. We stayed on site D-08 on this visit. The site was level, gravel, and had good shade.

We used the bathhouse in the main building as it was closest to our site. It was very clean and air-conditioned, which was nice on this warm summer stay. There is a second bathhouse on the property but we did not visit it.

Firewood and a good-sized camp store was available at the office. The resort has many amenities to include a heated pool, fitness center, playground, dog park, laundry, a rally room with a large deck and gas grill, dump station, and propane filling station.

We found good cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The campground did have wi-fi and it worked good at our site.

Pro Tip: There is a FREE breakfast every morning in the rally room. The morning we were there they were making waffles, and had bagels, pastries, fruit, and a variety of drinks to include coffee. They also had an ice cream social in the rally room the first night we were there, so watch the bulletin board for cool events like that. Additionally, right across the street (a short walk depending on where your site is in the park) there is a brewery that also serves food.

While we were hesitant to stay at a RV park, we found this place to a pleasant surprise. Very quiet and clean for its size. We’ll definitely keep this one on the list when passing through Richmond.

    Americamps RV Resort

    Great Proximity to Richmond

We’re originally from Richmond and needed a centrally located campground to spend 5 weeks in our class A while taking care of some things in town. (We’re full time travelers in our motorhome.) The location is the best in the Richmond area for a full hookup campground for a large RV. It’s right off I-95 and is mostly good size pull through sites. The kids loved the playground and pool area. The staff was friendly and put on some fun events during the time we were there like mimosas on Mother’s Day and a larger race day event with a band and food trucks. It’s a large campground but was surprisingly quiet. Very convenient to restaurants and shopping. Would certainly recommend for a quick overnight stay or if you need to visit Richmond.

    Fort Eustis Recreation Area

    Excellent Bargain

    Season: year round

    Reservations: 757-878-2610 or 2565

    Pets: Leashed

    Sites: 9 $20.00 with w/e/s

    Cabins: 5 $75.00 daily

Picnic table, grill, playground, bowling, paintball, tennis, propane, water, electric, trash, laundry, showers, fishing

It was as if they have two sections in the campground. One section seems to have long term and then the section where the 9 sites are is nice and open with many mature trees. There is nice separation between sites. I loved the area but I am a country girl at heart. Nice to be in the heart of the military. BTW"GREAT" Military Transportation Museum. The commissary is fantastic, didn't go to the PX.

The Colonies RV and Travel Park

    Historic

Sites: 22 with 1 pull thru 13 full hookups 12 Tent sites

    Electric: 30-50 amp

This is a private campground and you do not have to be military to stay. It really is in a great location.

Beach, dump, firewood, showers, fire pit, store, ice picnic table, playground, toilets, concrete pads, horseshoes, trash. A wonderful spot for a campground on the Historic Fort Monroe. There is no gate to have to pass through to reach the campground. It is located on the far end and on a beautiful flat grassy area with beautiful mature trees. Well maintained and very quiet. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum. You have water on two sides with excellent walking area.

Guide to Lanexa

Campgrounds near Lanexa, Virginia occupy the coastal plain region where the York and Rappahannock rivers feed into the Chesapeake Bay. Most sites sit at elevations under 100 feet and experience humid subtropical conditions with warm summers reaching 90°F and mild winters rarely dropping below freezing. The camping season runs longest from April through November, with water-based activities peaking from June through September when water temperatures average 75-85°F.

What to do

Water recreation opportunities: Bethpage Camp-Resort in nearby Urbanna offers diverse water activities beyond simple swimming. "We loved having both options for spending some time in the water" with both lake access and pools available according to one visitor. Kayaking is also available for those wanting to explore the waterways.

Historic explorations: The region sits within Virginia's Historic Triangle. While staying at Military Park Cheatham Annex, visitors can access multiple sites via the Colonial Parkway. "It is immediately adjacent to the Colonial Parkway for easy access to historic Jamestown as well, making for a great base for exploring the historic sites and state and national parks of the area."

Fishing spots: Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay provides dedicated fishing areas including a pier specifically designed for crabbing. "We had never been crabbing and this beautiful rv park has its own crabbing pier. There is boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," noted one visitor who tried this regional activity.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Unlike the tight quarters mentioned at some parks, Grey's Point Camp receives praise for its open layout. "The sites are spacious and always clean when we arrive," mentioned one repeat visitor. This extra space makes a significant difference for campers with larger setups or those wanting privacy.

Family activities: Multiple parks schedule regular events to keep children engaged. "We loved this campground! It was also kid friendly which is something we're always looking for. We had so much fun and there is quite a bit to do," wrote one camper about their Bethpage Camp-Resort experience. Activities range from organized games to playground facilities.

Beach access: Waterfront camping allows for immediate water recreation. The Colonies RV Park visitors appreciate the proximity to swimming areas. "Beach access, country store, water on 2 sides. Located on historic Fort Monroe, VA the fort has a lot to offer," explains a camper who enjoyed the waterfront setting.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Early booking becomes essential during peak periods. "We went the last weekend the pool was open, which wasn't crowded at all," noted a visitor to Grey's Point Camp, suggesting significant crowd differences between peak and shoulder seasons.

Weather considerations: The coastal location experiences occasional severe weather. "We stayed here Sept 2020 during tropical storm and covid, lol. Was a great safe location in port of storm, the sites mostly drained well. Very few sites had issues," reported one camper, indicating the importance of site drainage when booking.

Permanent residents: Several parks maintain a mix of transient and permanent campsites. At Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay, "Annuals run the place and take up the most desirable sites. Other sites are unlevel and muddy," according to one less satisfied visitor, highlighting the importance of understanding campground composition when booking.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and kid amenities: Anvil Campground offers specialized children's facilities despite its compact size. "We really loved the sandy playground. It is completely fenced in and has play equipment, hammocks and a zip line. The grandkids loved the zip line," shared one grandparent, noting the security feature of the fenced area.

Swimming options: Multiple swimming areas cater to different age groups. "Great pools and splash pad. Beach. Boating," listed one visitor to Grey's Point Camp, indicating the range of water options for children of varying swimming abilities.

Seasonal activities: Holiday periods feature additional programming. "Casino night was a blast! Overall a family friendly place with plenty for the kids to do!" mentioned a visitor to Bethpage Camp-Resort, highlighting the special events that enhance family stays.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Experienced RVers recommend considering proximity to amenities when choosing sites. At American Heritage RV Park, "We like the upgraded sites. But they lack shade. It was extremely hot that weekend," cautioned one camper, pointing out the trade-offs between newer facilities and natural cover.

Leveling considerations: Many regional campgrounds offer concrete pads, but quality varies. "Our site was very nice site#10, a leveled concrete site with room to park our towed vehicle while still attached to our Motor Home. We also had a level concrete patio with a picnic table," noted a satisfied visitor at American Heritage RV Park.

Location for day trips: Position your base camp strategically for regional exploration. "This park was very convenient to Williamsburg, Richmond, and Virginia Beach. The staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating," shared a visitor who used American Heritage RV Park as their hub for exploring multiple destinations within driving distance.
