This was our 3rd night camping spot on the white rim. It’s 6 miles off the main road. Super sandy driving. Vault toilets. Unforgettable views

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need reservations for camping at Canyonlands National Park?

Yes, reservations are strongly recommended for camping at Canyonlands National Park. For Taylor Backcountry Campsites and other backcountry locations along the White Rim, permits are required and should be secured well in advance, as these sites are highly sought after. Backcountry permits for the White Rim can be booked up to four months ahead through recreation.gov. The developed campgrounds in the park also fill quickly during peak seasons. Planning ahead is essential, especially if you're visiting during spring or fall when the park experiences its highest visitation.

What amenities are available at Canyonlands National Park campgrounds?

Amenities at Canyonlands National Park campgrounds are intentionally minimal to preserve the wilderness experience. At Taylor Backcountry Campsites, you'll find vault toilets but no running water, electricity, or cell service. The site is located about 6 miles off the main road with sandy driving conditions. The campsite offers stunning panoramic views of the canyon landscape. Other campgrounds in the park typically provide pit toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no hookups or showers. All campers must pack in their own water, food, and other supplies, and practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash.

What campgrounds are available inside Canyonlands National Park?

Canyonlands National Park offers several camping options. The main developed campgrounds include Island in the Sky's Willow Flat Campground and The Needles district's Squaw Flat Campground. For backcountry enthusiasts, Taylor Backcountry Campsites provide a more remote experience along the White Rim Trail. Additionally, there are numerous designated backcountry sites throughout the park, particularly along the White Rim Road and in the Needles district. Each area offers a distinct experience of the park's diverse landscapes and geological features.

Are there any free or dispersed camping options near Canyonlands National Park?

While Canyonlands National Park itself doesn't offer free or dispersed camping, there are options on nearby BLM land. The areas around Moab and along Highway 191 have several designated dispersed camping areas. For true dispersed camping experiences, consider the BLM lands near Lockhart Basin or the areas south of Moab. Remember that all camping within Canyonlands National Park boundaries requires permits and designated sites must be used, including at backcountry locations like Taylor Campsites.
