The rough dirt Timpooneke Road also begins at the campground, nearly circumnavigates Mount Timpanogos and offers excellent mountain biking and birding. The campground sits along the 20-mile paved Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. It passes through alpine canyons, mountain meadows, aspen groves and pine forests, offering breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range.

    Natural Features

The campground lies among dense, shady stands of aspen, fir and spruce trees at an elevation of 7,400 feet. Stream and riparian area are located within the campground. Wildlife and summer wildflowers are abundant and autumn leaves put on quite a show.

    East Canyon Campground-Yurt

We stayed in a yurt and it was an amazing experience! The yurt had a cozy gas powered fireplace. It got down to about 30 degrees but we were actually too hot. Beautiful views of the lake and mountains. Woke up to deer outside our yurt. Great experience!

    Beautiful camping in the mountains

You’ll love it. Campground is in a beautiful setting. You’ll love sitting around your campfire watching the deer scamper in the mountains. RV camping is a must for me and full hookups are available. The price is very reasonable and anything you could ever need is easily accessible in Tooele right outside the gate.

    Love this nearby yurt

This is a great place to take a small group for some winter backcountry fun not far from the city. There are more remote yurt options around, but this one feels pretty remote with its 2.5 mile hike in. It does tend to fill up fast so book early. It has a spacious bunk area with a nice wood burning stove that keeps everything toasty during the cold nights. Grab the gang and have a great time.

    Utah Lake

Utah Lake State Park gets a lot of users both day users and overnight. It is pretty close to population centers.

I like to go to fish. There are a lot of catfish and white bass. Some walleye. The kids like to swim though the water is a little muddy in some parts

Amazing campground a short drive from the city

This campground is well maintained and nestled into some nice pine trees in view of the backside of Mount Timpanogos, it is divided into 3 areas, one of which has horse corrals. While there are many campgrounds in Utah that rival it, this one is special because it's such a short drive after work.

    Beautiful scenic campground

This was a beautiful campground. Very nice. I love how it is near a river. You can hear it at night. It's so nice to get to a cool area out of the hot valley and into the cool scenic back country of Utah county. Bathrooms were fresh non out house smelling for sure. Highly recommended.

    Great SLC stop over

This my 3 stay here at Utah Lake state park. 2x in July and now in September. I’m a single female traveler. With the heat this summer I’ve been boondocking in the mountains and then come down to the valley to restock and plug in for a few days. This state park checks all of the boxes.

Lots of trees for shade and lots of bugs.

This is a fun place to stay when you want to go someplace close. There are lots of trees for the summer months and lots of shade. There are a couple good beaches. This is Utah's biggest fresh water lake. There are lots, and lot of bug so bring bug spray.

Awesome mountain views. Good fishing in the Provo river or lake fishing. You can build a fire and get firewood from camp host. There is full hook ups and also spots for a tent. Most spots have a pavilion and nice tables. Great bathrooms with running water. I can't remember which spot we stayed at but they are were really nice.

    Lovely!

Utah is such an amazing place to visit for the outdoors. My family and I come here once a year because we love hiking and being in the outdoors. This place was great and provided us a place to stay for a few nights before making the long drive home. There are some great hikes nearby that I highly recommend. We went on a 10 mile round trip hike one of the mornings and the views were incredible. The campground was great, and the campsites were awesome. Each campsite is separated by trees so you feel like you have some privacy which we really loved. There is a great burger joint nearby that I recommend going too. We ate here twice!

    Fantastic Mountain Biking Around Here!

This is super close to my favorite mountain bike ride in Northern Utah - The Wasatch Crest Trail. As you can tell in the pictures, this area is very lush and rich with pine trees. It stays relatively cool, even in the summer time. One of the best reasons to stay here is for the mountain biking though. There's nothing like riding a bike through deep dark forests, soaring mountains, and stretching meadows riddled with flowers. Doughnut Falls is also a very worthy destination if you don't like mountain biking. It is a family friendly hike we've done many times with a three year old, especially considering how rewarding the waterfall payoff is at the end! Highly recommend camping in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Dixie Creek Campground — East Canyon State Park

A good example of how government campsites should be done

Overall, the facility is neat and clean for a campground. My visit was at the end of the 4th weekend, so some messes were expected. My campsite was in good shape upon setting up my 30ft trailer. All sites are back-in and mostly flat asphalt. A little rig leveling might be needed. The outside of the loop at Dixie C.G. is electric and water only. The inside of the loop has full hook-ups.

All sites have long, sturdy metal tables and a metal cover over a concrete pad. A fire pit was adjacent. Even with fire restrictions almost everywhere else in Utah, wood fires were permitted in the provided pit. Common area toilets are well maintained, containing flush toilets and running water. Most service buildings also contain free showers.

A one-star deduction is due to the effects of climate change, which is out of the Park's control to an extent. That said, my beef is with maintenance of the beach - a nice beach by the way. It's obvious where the historical water level use to be. Wish I could have seen the reservoir full because it may never happen again. But I digress. I think the park should rake or scrape the beach surface to remove offensive weeds and people's discards. That takes workers, budget and equipment. My guess is our State representatives lack interest to fund state parks for such mediation measures. It would greatly enhance the visual appeal and safety for families at the water's edge.

    Very peaceful!

Campground was full, but there is a road that has lots of pull offs with fire pits and picnic tables. Spread out sites. Primitive so no power or water but for $15 and only minutes from SLC and the salt flats I’ll take it. It is gated and closes at 7pm so get there early to grab a good spot.

    Great campground

This is a great campground! We did the dry camping and we were in the location all the way to the back. The only two bad things that we noticed it was there was a lot of trash left over at the campground from the previous occupants. And there is no cell service at all unless you’re up near the gate. Other than that a great location the lady at the gate was very very helpful very very nice. Very knowledgeable was able to provide a lot of answers to our questions. We brought a whole bunch of teenage girls for my daughter‘s birthday party and they were able to be loud and did not disturb anybody. The dry camping spots are very spacious lots of space for the walk around and play and run.

    Great getaway

We only stayed overnight but it was a blast! The campsites had good space between each other. Each one had a fire pit and picnic table. We woke up to see cows in the morning which the kids loved. Had some great areas for hiking and is really close to the reservoir for some awesome fishing. Would definitely come back.

It has everything you could need to camp comfortably in a beautiful setting

You’re gonna love sitting out by your fire pit watching the deer scamper all over the mountains that surround you. Camp management is wonderful they go above and beyond to reserve you the best campsite available. I just wish it was open all year. We go at least two or three times a year for a week at a time. Full hookups are available and you’ll love your mini vacay!!!!

Great Views of Deseret Peak at the End of the Road CG

A wonderful place to set up camp for a week for a week or to use as a basecamp to climb the high peaks that surround the terminus of the South Willow Canyon road!  On the way into the campground you get a great view of the rugged 11,000 foot Deseret Peak that looms over the campsites.  While you can't really see it from most of the campgrounds, the serenity afforded by the trees and distance between the sites is more than enough to satisfy most outdoors people.  For those that want to get a little closer to the peak, there is a 7 mile one way trail to the top of Deseret Peak that offers amazing views of the Great Salt Lake Valley! You can see all the way to the northern end of the lake as well as beyond the Bonneville Salt Flats into Nevada.

As for the campground itself it is fairly primitive and is very much like all of the other campgrounds in the canyon.  It is however a little bit larger, having 12 single sites for $15 and a double site for $31.  Like the other campgrounds you also need to bring your own water and trash bags as those amenities are not supplied.  There are fire rings and picnic tables at every campsite and enough room for 1 car to park off of the dirt road.  Another thing that is a little unique about this campground is that the stay limit is 7 days instead of the usually 14 that I see at most places

Beautiful location, but bring everything you might need

I have a small SUV, so I buy firewood and fill up water containers after I've set up camp. I usually expect a decent drive to find what I need, but this involved a very long drive down a rutted gravel road, out of the canyon, and back to Grantsville. I think it was 40 minutes each way.

The campground itself was lovely. Very peaceful, good distance between sites. The camp host was really nice. We lent him a towel on the way in so he could wrap up an injured bird he'd found. I only pack old raggedy towels for camping anyway, but he was so appreciative and came back a couple times to give us updates on the bird (happy ending: its broken lower beak can be replaced with a prosthetic) and free samples of this chocolate filled marshmallow someone dropped off by the pallet load for them to distribute.

We were with a bunch of kids, so we only checked out one part of the Medina trail, but it was beautiful, with lovely views.

I would definitely camp here again, but pack more efficiently so I could do it all in one trip. The four stars is less about the campground and more the state website's lack of clarity ("no water" can mean there's water just at the entrance to the park, or it can mean something more like this).

Avoid unless you like very windy camping

Very windy---20-30mph winds nearly everyday. That's why it's popular for hang gliding. Unless you're coming here to fly then it's a terrible spot!

    Pretty solid for a night

This place is up pretty high with mine, town, and mountain views. The camping is free and dispersed and there are lots of RVs up there. There weren't many other tents probably because it was so windy. The location is where paragliders take off from which I'd imagine is pretty cool to watch but it definitely creates more noise. It's a great place if you're in the area and looking for a last minute free place to crash. Stake down your tent if you have one though. The road is fine all the way there and there are just a few bumps when you get up.

    Decent place near SLC

Pulling up we were a bit confused as there were paid sites near the bathroom. It appears that anything beyond that is dispersed. Easy access for big rigs with just a couple stretches of gravel road.

Nice level ground, wide open space. It can get extremely windy at night, but that was to be expected. There is an excavation site next to the hill that runs throughout the night. It adds a bit of light and noise, but it wasn't terrible.
