    Ken's Lake Campground

Great BLM campground, near water, convenient base camp!

Kens Lake is a hidden gem of the Moab Valley. It's a great spot to camp and is close to town and great biking, hiking, park-touring. Kens lake is actually a reservoir...it has a gravel bottom and the shores / beaches are gravel as well. It's a nice spot to cool off during the heat of the day. Not a lot of shade, no lawns, but it does have a great hiking trail that meanders around the hillside and across a stream. Kens lake is big-rig friendly. My parents parked their toy hauler 5th wheel at a spot in the Kens Lake campground and it was a bargain compared to the RV resorts, with much more character too!

    Hill AFB FamCamp

    Cute little spot

Great amenities, dog park, showers, laundry. Stayed here long term a couple times and it’s always a great stay! Close to the park, splash pad, and track. Hosts are pleasant. A little close together but good for being on base.

    Tanners Flat

Good location for exploring Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake City

You really need to know this: No dogs are allowed because this campground is in the Salt Lake City watershed.

And this: As inviting as the water running through the campground may look, you are not allowed to swim, wade or wash in it.

One more thing: Gate closes at 10 pm although that didn't stop some partiers at the next site in from us. They partied and left around 11 or so. There was no payment tag on the post. The exit is open but has tire shredders if you enter over them.

A pleasant surprise at a Forest Service campground: 10 lbs of ice for $2! (There was also the usual bundle of firewood for $6.)

An unpleasant surprise: Old, dirty bathrooms. I've seen cleaner vault toilets elsewhere than these flush toilets.

There is no water for now (July 2018) in bathroom sinks or at spigots. The host said something about a pipe issue and water needing to be tested. That covers the amenities other than dumpsters.

What about the sites? We arrived on a Sunday morning when the host was putting up signs indictating which sites were reserved. We had 3 possible sites among 1 through 19 and grabbed #9, a pull through site with a buffer between the road in the parking/small RV area.

Sites in the other area (higher numbers) were becoming available, but that area's host said many of the sites were only appropriate for tents.

Our site #9: There are a few steps down to the picnic table, fire ring and grill plus a separate area to the left for a tent. See photos.

    General site info:

    • Some sites have a concrete pad for the picnic table, etc.

    • Many sites have an area for the tent that is away from the picnic table and concealed from the road.

    Lakeside RV Campground

Great access to Provo & Utah Lake

Lakeside was our home for 3 nights while we were in town for Provo’s annual Colonial Festival. I really loved the proximity of this campground to Provo City—12mins to downtown, and the incredible tree coverage here. This campground is beautifully shaded and quite enjoyable for spending time outside on the grounds—even in July.

Across Center St. and behind a field is Provo Airport which is home to (I think,) smaller aircraft as they are audible from the campgrounds, though not excessive. To the west of the campground, separated by a fence is the Lakeside Storage Facility that houses a TON of petrol signs, gadgets & a few vehicles— a free, outdoor museum of gas station memorabilia from a different time. The north side of the campground is surrounded by a quite large river that you can access by a hiking over a large dirt berm. Although this area beside the river is not maintained by the campground, there are stairs in one spot and a couple of foot trails that can take you to the top of the berm. Here you’ll be able to walk along a narrow trail along the river, nearly across the entire north side of the grounds.

This campground is VERY tight knit, as most of the spots don’t have much of a yard and if you have slides you need to be careful not to hit anything. I feel we got the worst site on the grounds— J1. Our 30’ rig hardly fit in the spot and made it difficult to park our truck every day as well as making it difficult for vehicles to pull their rigs behind our spot, squeezing behind our trailer bumper and the fenced dog run. Our yard was also the smallest there, about 2’ at the widest point, narrowing to points at each end. This pull-through spot was the worst part of our experience, but I would definitely like to return.

The front office staff is incredibly kind and accommodating. I’m fairly certain that we could have swapped our spot if we had asked to do so. We used the dog run & playground nearly everyday and stopped by the pool and store a couple of times. This campground seems very well cared-for and was so enjoyable to us that we would return—however next time, we would attempt to reserve a specific spot rather than take the chance at once again landing on J1. All of the sites on the north side of the grounds (purple back-in,) looked wonderful; shaded & quiet, and a few of the sites in the east/ middle side of the grounds like B12 looked wonderful. Most of the end sites in the middle of the campground had a much more enjoyable yard-area. Had we not booked so near Independence Day, we may have been able to request one of these more “premium” sites.

I think we’d like to camp here again when we have friends or family camping with us, we can request a larger site and spend some wonderful summer evenings under the huge shade trees.

    Nice quiet park

Friendly staff nice level sites pull through FHU grassy spot between sites.

    Pony Express RV Resort

Clean, convenient, but not a “campground”.

I would say 75% or more of the spots are full time rv’ers. Mostly everyone is friendly, sites are clean, but kids and barking dogs everywhere! Spaces aren’t as small as I feared they’d be after reading reviews. I guess it depends on your rig size. We have a small 21’ travel trailer and the pull through spots are perfect!

Both my neighbors are permanent residents. (actually everyone around us is) The one just south of me has been sawing wood since we arrived. It’s now 8:30pm and very much annoying.

The gnats and mosquitos are are just as annoying as the permanent kids in the park.

The playground is clean, a good sized one, but overrun with unsupervised kids.

Guide to Grantsville

RV campgrounds near Grantsville, Utah provide convenient access to both natural attractions and urban amenities. Located approximately 30 miles west of Salt Lake City at an elevation of 4,300 feet, the area experiences hot summers and cold winters with typical high desert climate patterns. Camping options range from basic gravel sites to developed RV parks with concrete pads within driving distance of Grantsville.

What to do

Trail access: From Riverside RV Resort, campers can reach the Weber River via walking paths. "There's a walking trail that runs along the Weber river and a dog run on the eastern part of the property. Even though this campground was tight & busy, it was incredibly quiet and peaceful," notes reviewer Rara B.

Fishing opportunities: Nearby water features allow for fishing excursions during your stay. "Just South of Ogden with all your city amenities but tucked away in a quiet river setting. Lots of space, Full hookups and nice landscaping. No River view but you can go fishing or they say you can tube or wade in it," reports Barb N. about Riverside RV Resort.

Great Salt Lake swimming: Experience the unique buoyancy of the salt lake water at Great Salt Lake State Park Campground. "We stayed here for a night in August and it was just a magical evening - from watching the buffalo herds in the distance, to taking a dip in the Great Salt Lake, to the vibrant sunset and then a wild lightning storm," shares Angela C.

What campers like

Close proximity to attractions: Pony Express RV Resort offers convenient access to outdoor trails. "Convenient location right off the highway with full hook ups and nice paved sites. Dog areas, playground, games, and a pool. Easy access to the Jordan River Trail for running, biking, or sunset walks," according to cheriana G.

Lakeside camping: Visitors appreciate the waterfront access at Lakeside RV Campground. "We were able to walk to Utah Lake via the state park and even found an interesting collection of old gas station signs, pumps and other road-memorabilia along the way! Really enjoyed our brief stay!" writes Mark C.

Spacious sites: Some Grantsville area campgrounds offer more room between sites than others. "Our South Dakota family surprised us with a visit here and though MANY places were booked this weekend we got a last minute spot across from our family—this place is very accommodating!" shares Rara B. about Valley View RV Resort.

What you should know

Site spacing considerations: RV campgrounds vary significantly in spacing between units. "The sites, streets, and pads, all in excellent condition. Everything looks new," says Patrick J. about Riverside RV Resort, while another camper notes about Mountain Shadows RV Park: "Challenging back-in for our 30' ft travel trailer. Very cramped spot. Fortunately, we arrived before neighbors on both side did."

Environmental factors: Some campgrounds experience noise issues from transportation corridors. "There is a lot of noise from the interstate and the nearby Air Force base. The only issue we had was that the street lights in the resort were super bright at night," reports Brian about Riverside RV Resort.

Cleanliness standards: Maintenance varies between campgrounds. "The staff clearly take pride in keeping the park clean for everyone," notes Teresa A. about Mountain Shadows RV Park, while a different visitor mentioned: "wife said women's restroom was dirty, mens wasn't bad but the restrooms smelled like pot."

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Park City RV Resort offers water recreation options. "Hot tub! POOL! This place is amazing. I recommend the lower spots, G and H or tent campsites as they are farther from the road. There's a nice creek down there and still close bathrooms with shower," writes Alice V.

Playground availability: Some RV parks provide designated play areas for children. "Cute RV park close to lake Utah...They have men's and women's restrooms with showers. They also have a pool for the warmer months. There are 2 small dog parks one for large and one for small dogs," reports Erin A. about Lakeside RV Campground.

Level site importance: Request level sites when traveling with children. "The RV sites are pretty close together, but there are spaces with shade trees. We went in August 2020 and there were so many bugs. The campground is located right off the main road that takes you to Utah Lake so there can be a lot of traffic going down the road," shares Steven M. about Lakeside RV Campground.

Tips from RVers

Extended stay considerations: Some RV parks near Grantsville accommodate long-term visitors better than others. "It has a lot of amenities, clean facilities, and concrete pads. The sites are pretty close together so if you like your space, this probably isn't the best place. You can't burn firewood but you can have a propane fire pit," notes Nicole B. about Pony Express RV Resort.

Seasonal pricing fluctuations: Off-season stays may offer better value. "Kind of pricy for what it is. We paid almost $50 for full hook ups on the second level. A back in site really close to two other RVs on dirt/rocks. But even though it's right off the highway it was reasonably quiet," reports Courtney about Park City RV Resort.

Utility reliability: Full hookup quality varies between properties. "Friendly staff nice level sites pull through FHU grassy spot between sites," notes Robert O. about Lakeside RV Campground, while Mountain Shadows visitor Abner H. shares: "Selected a partial hookup (water/electric) site instead for $45/night. There is a dump station and dumpsters available and propane fill station as well."
