Morefield Campground operates from mid-April through October as the sole camping option within Mesa Verde National Park, with over 250 sites spread across multiple paved loops. The campground sits on open terrain with scattered gambel oak groves, and as Christy C. notes, there are "little to no trees in the loop." Most sites accommodate dry camping without hookups, though a limited number offer full utilities in the Ute Loop.
Site layouts vary considerably throughout the different loops. Some campsites sit level on gravel surfaces in exposed areas, while others feature steps leading down into oak groves where tent pads and picnic tables sit below parking areas. The stepped sites tend to provide more privacy from neighboring campers. Dexter I. found that "water could be found at the restrooms," with flush toilets and drinking water available at multiple locations throughout the campground.
The camp store complex includes a Sinclair gas station, free showers, and coin-operated laundry facilities. WiFi coverage reaches throughout the campground, with stronger signals near restroom buildings, though cell service remains spotty. Dump stations and fresh water fill points serve RV campers. The campground allows alcohol and provides firewood when available, though fire restrictions may apply during dry periods.
Road access to the campground involves a winding route from the park entrance that some reviewers describe as challenging. Reservations through Aramark are recommended, though site selection within loops operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Pricing runs higher than typical national park campgrounds at around $35 per night for tent sites. The campground closes completely during winter months, and campers exploring the area can find campsites outside Mesa Verde National Park for year-round options.
This campground works best for visitors prioritizing proximity to Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings and archaeological sites, located 15-20 miles deeper into the park.
Description
Morefield Campground is four miles from the park entrance. The 267 campsites are situated within a high-elevation, grassy canyon filled with Gambel oak, native flowers, deer, and wild turkeys. Each site has a picnic table, gravel tent pad, and fire pit/BBQ grill. A camp store offers registration, food, and camp supplies. Firewood, gasoline, showers, a coin-operated laundromat, and a kennel are located nearby. The campground is managed by park concessioner Aramark and is open between spring and fall.
