Best RV Parks & Resorts near Vanderpool, TX

Lost Maples RV and Camping provides 25 year-round sites near Vanderpool with full hookups including 50-amp electric, water and sewer connections. The park features level sites with fire pits and BBQ grills, accommodating larger recreational vehicles with designated big rig-friendly areas. Parkview Riverside RV Park in nearby Concan offers similar amenities with riverside locations and sanitary dump facilities for motorhomes. Caribbean Cowboy RV Park in Tarpley maintains 20 RV sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp hookup options approximately 30 miles from Vanderpool. "Overall, this is the best RV park on the Frio River. Some sites are paved and they do have one site, #17, that has a paved pavilion for a small upcharge per day more than other river-front sites."

Advance reservations are essential for RV travelers, particularly during fall when the area's maple trees display vibrant colors, filling campgrounds quickly. Many parks have gravel roads that become muddy during rain, creating challenging conditions for larger rigs. Most RV sites throughout the region provide picnic tables and allow fires, though visitors should verify current fire restrictions before arrival. Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds, with limited connectivity in valley locations. Several campers noted issues with site leveling on sloping terrain. Pet policies differ across parks - Parkview Riverside allows pets while others charge additional fees ranging from $2.50 per pet per night to $50 violation penalties.

    Alsatian RV Resort

    Exceptional Customer Service

This campground(CG)/RV resort has exceptional customer service. We were on a waitlist to add another day to our reservation. They proactively called us back about a month later to let us know they could accommodate another night’s stay. We followed the website instructions to come in so we could take a right turn into the RV Resort, which is a 1/4 mile from the golf course entrance. A very short rig could take a left turn. The gate was down so we called the number listed on the gate and we were let in for a very pleasant check-in. We were assigned pull-through site 406 with FHUs. There’s a slope off the front of the site, so I needed to center the rig on the level part of the cement pad. By doing this I needed 20’ of sewer hose to get from my rear black tank to the sewer. The CG was quiet with no kids running around as this is a 55+ CG. The guest internet was below average for a park this size, but we have Starlink. We got 3 bars on Verizon. Most of the campers here were seasonal with license plates from CO, MN, and WI. Several of the campers we talked to didn’t golf and came here to get away from cold weather. We did not see any overnighters during our four-day stay but this CG is fairly far from the San Antonio area interstates. CG was well-kept with no junky sites. They have a laundry room, but a couple of machines were not working. The sites were decently spaced and very long. Many reviewers called the sites spacious. The sites were not as far apart or as large when compared to many of the State Parks or Corps of Engineers CGs we’ve stayed. Get pizza from Luigi's Italian Restaurant in nearby Castroville as it’s in the top 5 pizzas we’ve had as we traveled through all lower 48 states. We enjoyed our stay, including playing their challenging golf course, and would definitely return.

    Kerrville-Schreiner Park

    Good family friendly park

This park was close to a local event we wanted to attend, and we were very happy with it and will definitely go back. The first row is all pull through sites with full hookups, although we do have a shorter trailer (24’) and I’m not sure how much luck you would have with a truly big one. Most sites had a stone or wood picnic table, shady trees, and a fire ring. We saw a deer, squirrels, and even a herd of blackbuck antelope. Our particular site was number 121 and it had a feral cat shelter, which we saw several of the cats and one caretaker stop by. There are hiking trails and the park itself is minutes from many nearby attractions. My husband checked out the camp bathrooms for me for this review and he said they were smaller but clean and acceptable.

Overall a comfortable little park, sites not overcrowded together, and reasonably priced. Good job Kerrville.

    Bandera Crossing Riverfront RV Park

Fairly New Park, More Amenities Coming Soon

This park has been open for just over a year. They are adding amenities, but for what is there right now, it was a bit pricey. Yes, I'm sure the pricing was upped due to Mardi Gras weekend. It will be nice when tables and grills/fire rings are added for each site, but right now, it's basic full-hookups and not much more.

    Check In: 3p Check Out: 12 p

    Length of Stay: 3 Nights

💲 Cost per night $59 (price will be $75/night for Mardi Gras weekend 2023)

    Discounts: Good Sam 10%

    📝 Site#38 Notes:

    • Water
    • Max amp: 50 Sewer
    • Wifi
    • Site Pad: level, gravel, long (it was a back-in site, but it's been upgraded and is super long pull-through)
    • Utilities were close to the front. Parked camper and pulled the truck behind it instead
    • Close to neighbors, but room enough for tables and such (if you brought them)
    • No privacy between sites

    👍🏻 Pros:

    • Overflow parking nearby if needed
    • Close to the river
    • Big area to walk dogs or kids to play by the river (watch for sticker burrs in some areas)

    👎🏻 Cons:

    • Front row closest to the road- a little road noise
    • No tables, fire rings or grills at campsites
    • No shade trees
    • No wind brake

    📝 Park Notes:

    • River access - but it's pretty low right now. Won't be kayaking or even tubing anytime soon
    • Some deer in the park
    • Cabins
    • Some large fire rings on the outskirts of park, but not at sites
    • 3 miles into Bandera - close but nice to get away during big event weekends
    • There was a food truck on site, but it wasn't open this weekend

    In process of being built:

    • Great Lodge (should be ready by March) - Office, Store, Restrooms/Showers
    • Zipline
    • Yurts
    • Amphitheater
    • Pool/Hot Tub

    Castroville Regional Park

    Great

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Castroville Regional Park, and it was an amazing experience! The park is beautiful and well-maintained, offering a peaceful and scenic environment. The campsites are spacious, and I loved how they’re equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and plenty of space for tents or RVs. The staff were friendly and helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The nearby Medina River was perfect for a relaxing afternoon, and there are plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore. I also appreciated the clean restrooms and showers, which made the experience much more convenient. Overall, Castroville Regional Park is a great choice for a family-friendly getaway or a peaceful retreat into nature. I’ll definitely be coming back!

    Kerrville KOA

Typical KOA, great stop for over night.

    We have stayed here before.

It is a nice campground. Pull through and back in sites. Some with shade some not. It was 98 when we stopped today, but got in the shade after 5 so it helped.

Have a nice laundry room and rec room. Typical KOA bathrooms clean and nice.

The store has beer and ice cream what more can you ask on a hot day.

Internet is good so far can stream with no problem but the campground is not full.

We will stay again, it is right off I 10.

    Buckhorn Lake Resort

Amazing resort with lots of amenities

We stayed one night, but we plan to come back and stay a week later this year.

    Pros:

    • Long pull through sites.
    • They have several types of sites: back-in, pull through, head in.
    • Two pools, one is adults only.
    • Super large dog park, if you have dogs (we have a cat).

    Cons:

    • A little on the spendy side, but proximity to San Antonio and Fredericksburg, as well as amenities, are likely reasons.

    • Wifi was spotty, but it is also not guaranteed. If Internet is important, bring a hotspot or use cel phone.

Guide to Vanderpool

Vanderpool camping is positioned in the scenic Texas Hill Country at approximately 1,500 feet elevation, where the Sabinal River valley creates natural swimming spots during warmer months. Seasonal weather varies dramatically with hot summers reaching 90°F and cooler winters where temperatures can drop below freezing at night, affecting camping conditions throughout the year.

What to do

Swimming spots: Access the river at HTR TX Hill Country where campers report "crystal clear water" for "canoeing, kayaking, you name it." The park features "small rapids" that create natural swimming areas where "we watched all the turtles on the branches in the water just below us."

Wildlife viewing: Feed deer at Thousand Trails Medina Lake where "deer will literally eat feed out of your hands" according to visitors. The campground is known for "wildlife abound and the overall peace and serenity" despite being an older facility that "could stand a few upgrades."

Hiking trails: Explore elevation changes at Lost Maples RV and Camping where campers describe "a seven mile hike that ascended up different kinds of terrain" with "spectacular" views. A camper noted this was "a great campground for me as a first time camper" with water and electricity available.

What campers like

Private river access: Zubers River Camp offers "site 6 was spacious and really close to the river" with versatile water depths as one camper notes they "enjoyed how shallow and deep this part of river can be, definitely a great spot if Garner is full."

Cleanliness standards: Old River Road RV Resort maintains "very clean facilities" throughout their 202-site property. A camper reported, "They have 2 swimming pools, a splash pad, 2 play grounds, and one of them is covered and located next to a jump pad. The bathrooms were always clean and even have private showers."

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the site layout at HTR TX Hill Country, noting "our site was a premium waterfront (worth every penny)" and "lots of lovely giant cypress trees and lots of places to walk our dogs and enjoy the scenery and the river." One camper specifically mentioned having "a HUGE yard area to play in which was awesome."

What you should know

Water levels fluctuate: River depths change seasonally affecting swimming areas. At Parkview Riverside RV Park, a camper noted they "love kayaking here" but mentioned water levels vary, making "the river access points fairly close to each other. One is a dirt ramp and the other is a steep set of metal stairs."

Cell service quality: Reception varies significantly by location and carrier. A camper at Lost Maples RV and Camping noted "we have Verizon and had NO cellphone reception which was fine" but mentioned "GREAT wifi!!! No problems" for those needing internet access for remote work or schooling.

Amenities differ widely: Not all campgrounds offer the same facilities. Becs Store & RV Park is described as "The BEST hidden secret for camping in Texas" with "wonderful camping privacy" but doesn't offer showers or toilet facilities, requiring self-containment.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Old River Road RV Resort offers family-friendly amenities including "an indoor pool and hot tub that is heated. They also have a great playground for kids as well as a covered basketball court. The basketball court also has a net that can be used for tennis or pickle ball."

Educational experiences: Schedule visits to nearby attractions like the bat colony mentioned by a Nana's RV Park camper: "Close by there is the 2nd largest colony of bats" which can provide a unique wildlife viewing opportunity for children.

Quiet times: Thousand Trails Medina Lake offers family-friendly spaces where it's "really nice to take a walk around in the evening and let the kids ride bikes" though some campers noted issues with rule enforcement as "there are a LOT of people here that play loud music after hours and do not follow the rules."

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Several RV campgrounds near Vanderpool, Texas require leveling equipment. At HTR TX Hill Country, a camper noted they "arrived 4 hours later than planned... right at dark but were still able to get hooked up with minimal struggle."

Site selection strategy: At Parkview Riverside RV Park, one RVer advises "they do have one site, #17, that has a paved pavilion for a small upcharge per day more than other river-front sites" which might be worth the extra cost during muddy conditions.

Arrival timing: First-come, first-served policies apply at some rv campgrounds in the Vanderpool area. A Thousand Trails Medina Lake visitor recommended: "Get there early. First-come-first-served policy. Sites are good size. Most have plenty of shade," noting the importance of timing for securing preferred spots.
