Lake Texoma straddles the Texas-Oklahoma border with over 580 miles of shoreline at an elevation of 617 feet above sea level. Multiple glamping locations near Sherman, Texas offer cabin accommodations with varying levels of amenities and proximity to water activities. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters, making seasonal planning essential for comfortable glamping stays.
What to do
Hiking trails: Ray Roberts Lake State Park provides multiple trail options with diverse terrain. "Hiking trails are challenging, they are also available to mountain bikes however the trail is challenging. You can also hike on the cliffs, which is the parks unique feature," explains Vanessa M. at Johnson Branch Campsites.
Fishing opportunities: Catfish Bay at Lake Texoma State Park offers excellent shore fishing without requiring a boat. "Sites are water and electric, no sewer sites. There are 2 dump sites on the way out," notes a camper who stayed at Lakeside Campground on the Oklahoma side of Lake Texoma.
Beach swimming: Several glamping sites feature designated swimming areas with sand beaches. "The swim area in this park is down a pretty steep gravel trail that I had a hard time navigating. There is very limited bank access since the park sits about 50 feet up from the water line," reports a visitor to Eisenhower State Park.
What campers like
Quiet waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate the secluded spots directly on the water. "We stayed here in October at an RV site right on the lake. Luckily no one was in the site next to us, so we enjoyed a gentle slope down to the water," shares Richard about Lake Texoma State Park.
Shaded camping areas: Tree cover provides relief from Texas summer heat. "Most camp sites are shaded with pull through sites full hook ups, well maintained and quiet," notes Robert H. about Eisenhower State Park Campground.
Privacy between sites: The campgrounds maintain good separation between neighboring sites. "Peninsula juts out into water with lovely views of sunrise & sunset. Small campground with clean and nice but simple facilities," describes Harry H. at Preston Bend.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer brings intense heat while spring offers more moderate temperatures. "In the summer it gets very hot, nice hiking," warns Alice R. about Eisenhower State Park.
Reservation requirements: Most glamping sites near Sherman require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. "Visited this private resort on 9/14/19 for a quick night away from the city. They have a handful of full hookup RV sites and cabins," explains Chris P. about Walnut Creek Resort.
Ant problems: Several campgrounds report issues with ants during warm months. "Camping out on the peninsula (site numbers upper 20's to 30's), the sites are nicely spaced, have concrete pads - which is uncommon on Lake Texoma - and beautiful views. If you camp here, though, be fully prepared to battle tons of ants," advises Holly N. about Preston Bend.
Tips for camping with families
Group camping options: Some parks offer designated areas for larger family gatherings. "Our big group has gone to Eisenhower twice. The park is on Lake Texoma. We went to kayak and camp. They have good hiking trails, great campsites, and lots to do," shares Amy J.
Playground access: Certain campgrounds provide play areas to keep children entertained. "The other nice thing from our site, was that we were about 1/4 mile from a little playground for the kids. The playground wasn't anything grand, but it broke up the days for the kids some, which as all parents know is a gift," explains Chris H. from Johnson Branch.
Educational opportunities: Rangers at some parks offer learning activities. "Half of the campground is an equestrian camp. There are great hiking trails and beautiful views. Good shady spots. We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses!" explains Rachael H. from Platter Flats.
Tips from RVers
Hookup variations: Different sites offer varying levels of utility connections. "Section B is 50 amp. Sites are water and electric, no sewer sites. There are 2 dump sites on the way out," advises RICK V. about Lakeside Campground.
Site selection strategy: Choosing the right location makes a significant difference in comfort. "We love this place, they let us stay near two months when Covid hit cause we had no where else we could go... the spots are not far from the water and fishing areas but the fishing is good here. Spots are big with lots of trees," says Nathan W. about Thousand Trails Lake Texoma.
Accessibility considerations: Some sites present challenges for those with mobility issues. "The campground is tucked away in a woodsy area of Lake Texoma, our waterfront spot had a beautiful view & the sound of the fish jumping all around with the birds was quite serene! The one thing I didn't care for was the levelness of our spot, it was a little touch & go with my mother & her walker," notes Amy C. about Walnut Creek Resort.
