Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Sarita, TX

Padre Island National Seashore offers multiple pet-friendly camping areas where dogs can accompany their owners directly on the beach. South Beach permits free primitive camping with pets allowed on both the sand and in the water. North Beach similarly welcomes dogs with its drive-in beach camping that extends for miles along the Gulf shoreline. Both beaches provide drinking water access and allow fires on the sand, creating ideal settings for camping with pets. The national seashore's Malaquite Campground offers more developed sites with amenities like showers and toilets while still maintaining a pet-friendly environment. Many campers find the beach camping ideal for letting dogs enjoy off-leash swimming during less crowded periods.

Beach camping with dogs requires preparation for the persistent coastal winds that can easily collapse fiberglass pole tents. Metal pole tents with sand-rated stakes provide more stability when camping with pets in this environment. The campgrounds see varying levels of traffic, with South Beach described as heavily trafficked but clean, offering basic amenities like restrooms and trash facilities. For RV campers with pets, nearby options include Seawind RV Resort in Riviera, which provides full hookup sites and accepts dogs, and Nature's Own RV Resort in Kingsville with its clean laundry facilities. The beaches allow 14-day maximum stays, and several camping areas fall within the national seashore boundaries, requiring either a $25 entrance fee or free access with America the Beautiful passes.

South Beach — Padre Island National Seashore

Calling All Bird Watchers & Sea Shell Hounds...

There is a whole lot of Texas, but not a ton of public land lies therein. One exception to this is Padre Island National Seashore. With 63 miles of barrier island sand available to drive and camp on, it is impossible not to get away from it all.  And if you are a card carrying "America the Beautiful" pass holder, this place is FREE to camp!

Once you move away from the developed roads to the seaside sand, which is easy enough to drive on even with just front-wheel drive so long as you stay on the flats, you leave behind any services, water, electricity and toilets. Bring everything you need with you and you’ll be fine. We brought our solar panel and had all the electricity we could possibly want for 8 full days.

Park your rig just to the dune side of the highwater “roadway” and you’ll be out of the way for the many vehicles who come to fish, camp, or just explore this natural wonder. No OHV vehicles are allowed on the beach, which is considered a highway, so leave the toy-hauler behind. Opportunities to birdwatch, hike or bike along the beach, play in the surf or just lie in the sand are as numerous as the stars. We found some LTE by hiking up onto the high dunes, but just enough to call, text, or check email.

Within 15 miles, the small community of Padre Island offers plenty of restaurants and gas stations but cross the bridge into Corpus Christi and you’re in full-blown suburban Texas. Ice and water kiosks are everywhere so bring your quarters to fill up.

    Padre Balli County Park

    It's fine.

The price was right and I had water and electric hookups, but basically I was in a parking lot and all the grass around is full of briars. Made it really hard to walk the dog. Proximity to the beach was also really, if only the weather was a little better. The showers are a quarter pay situation and I paid $1.50 for a cold shower. When I went to ask the front office about it, they basically said "sometimes you have to run the sink for a minute". Sorry, but I am paying quarters for a shower that never gets warm that's a big dissapointment and then to met with indifference about it, hence the two stars. I also don't like that you don't get to pick your spot, you just show up, pay and they tell you where you are staying. It was the off season, so maybe things are better in full swing summer.

    Shields Park NAS Recreation Site

    NAS camping

Very nice campground if you don’t take your dogs or walk barefoot. Lots of what I call goat head stickers. It also has a constant wind flow but beautiful views and lots of beach walking. Clean laundry room, close to town but you’ll need a car. No base transportation from this area. You will need reservations to secure a spot.

    Colonia Del Rey RV Park

    Good value

This place is centrally located near a lot of services and activities. There's lots of pavement, which is not a huge selling point, but the dust is greatly reduced as a result. There's a small swimming pool and a large laundry. Bathrooms and showers are very clean. Personnel are very accommodating. There's a mix of short and long term residents. There's a decent amount of walking within the park, but outside the park is not that great. I didn't feel terribly safe. There are dogs running around without humans present and some homeless in the local park. The car wash next door is a great value and I was able to get my truck with extra high canopy washed for cheap. All in all, I thought it was a good place to stay.

South Beach — Padre Island National Seashore

    Great Beach Camping

PINS has always been my go to as far as Texas Overlanding goes. As someone who has traveled 99% of the country, finding a place that actually allows for on the beach camping like PINS is just about non existent.

The down side of PINS is every time I have gone it has been overflowing with garbage. A lot of times you do need to pay attention where you are stepping.

Overall the scenery is great, the dunes are right there and the water has always been extremely nice for Texas standards.

To access south beach a 4x4 vehicle is required and strongly recommended!

    Seawind RV Resort

    Great water view sites!

Seawind RV Resort is a nice, no-frills RV resort in Riviera, Texas on Baffin Bay. The park is adjacent to the waterfront park, beaches, boat launches, and fishing piers. Our site has views of the bay. The RV park offers large FHU sites with 50 amp. They take Good Sam discount and Passport America, which we used. The staff is friendly and the park is clean. We will definitely stay here again.

    Mustang Island State Park Campground

    Nice beach park

We camped in the RV area, which has electrical hook ups and water but you have to drive to the dump station. There are nearby bathrooms which are newly renovated and nice, although occasionally people using them to clean off from visiting the beach will make a big mess. Not just sand, but swim diapers and bathing suit tags and that sort of thing. The janitors clean every morning but it’s disappointing when people leave a big mess. Nothing against the park, only against the visitors. There are men and women’s bathrooms, family bathrooms/unisex bathrooms, as well as showers just outside the bathrooms.

Each RV spot is paved and comes with a picnic table and wooden pergola, also a grill for charcoal. We did notice quite a few burr plants so if you have dogs, you might have a problem later in the season when the burr seeds are dry.

You can walk to the beach or drive to the beach. There is tent and primitive RV camping on the beach if you wish, we did see people doing that. We visited around Easter Sunday and it was not too crowded, lots of picnic tables and plenty of space to have fun. We brought along a couple of mesh litter bags and were easily able to fill them up with random garbage that Washington to the beach, it was very satisfying to do that and there are dumpsters and trash cans conveniently located once you’re done with that.

It’s a short drive to Port Aransas or the other way to the edge of Corpus Christi, lots of restaurants and art galleries and all kinds of area attractions. Visit Snoopy’s under the bridge and eat on the deck. You can also take your RV on the ferry boat between Port A and Aransas Pass if you wish. It’s free.

Definitely visit, and go to the beach, and pick up a bag of litter.

Guide to Sarita

Padre Island National Seashore and surrounding coastal areas offer diverse camping environments for outdoor enthusiasts and their pets. This region maintains year-round accessibility with mild winter temperatures averaging 60°F and summer highs reaching into the 90s with persistent Gulf winds. The flat coastal terrain allows for direct beach access camping while inland sites provide protection from the strongest coastal elements.

What to do

Bird watching opportunities: South Beach attracts diverse wildlife including shorebirds. "We've spent many winter months around the Corpus Christi, Texas area and visit South Beach frequently. Plenty to do; fishing, sunbathing, bird watching, photography, and on some evenings after dark you can spot deer and coyote come out of the sand dunes to feed on seaweed and fish remains," notes Ron P.

Fishing access: The coastal waters provide excellent fishing spots. At Seawind RV Resort, Mark E. mentions "its by a pier known for catching some good fish! Drum, trout, red." The resort's location makes it convenient for anglers with pets seeking dog friendly campgrounds.

Beach exploration: Drive directly on miles of accessible shoreline. "PINS has always been my go to as far as Texas Overlanding goes. As someone who has traveled 99% of the country, finding a place that actually allows for on the beach camping like PINS is just about non existent," shares crikeyroams about South Beach camping.

What campers like

Direct beach access: Campers appreciate the ability to drive and camp right on the sand. "You are able to drive down the beach to find your perfect spot to set up your tents by the dunes! Very clean chemical toilets are near the beach entrance and very clean showers are up at the visitors center," reports Chastity H. about her experience at North Beach.

Natural wildlife viewing: The opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat draws many visitors. "Lovely breezes, wave crashing to lull you to sleep, shore birds, everything... But there are also a lot of dune buggies though, which can be annoying," notes Kim B. about North Beach primitive camping.

Affordable camping rates: Pet-friendly campgrounds near Sarita offer economical options. At Padre Balli County Park, Christian M. shares, "The price for tent campers is $20 day or $125 weekly & it includes power, water and single private bathrooms and single private showers."

What you should know

Wind conditions: The coastal area experiences consistent strong winds that affect camping setups. Ben M. from North Beach advises, "We showed up late while the tide was up which was a little unsettling, but we were assured it was at high as it gets."

Four-wheel drive requirements: Some beach areas require appropriate vehicles. "To access south beach a 4x4 vehicle is required and strongly recommended!" warns crikeyroams.

Tent stability considerations: The consistent coastal winds require proper equipment. At Yarborough Pass, Tucker B. reports, "Had to use the trucks as windbreaks, as it was pretty windy most of the weekend. But there was less blowing sand than on the ocean side."

Limited shade coverage: Most camping areas lack natural shade. "Don't expect much from this state park. It's basically just a beach. There are camping sites. For RVs. There are no trees at the camp sites. So if you go in the hot months, you'd better have a canopy," shares Red S. about Mustang Island State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Beach activity planning: Families can enjoy various beach activities throughout their stay. "We took my daughters here so we could camp on the beach and enjoy the stars. The wildlife hunting was great. Ghost crabs will be rubbing up against your tent all night," shares James S. from North Beach.

Turtle release viewings: Time your visit for potential turtle releases. James S. adds, "We did happen to be there for the release of some sea turtles which was the highlight. Get there early for a good spot and makes sure to have a portable shade and sunscreen."

Protected camping locations: Families may prefer camping behind dunes for wind protection. "My wife and I stayed at Mustang Island State Park Campground back in March. The camp area is off the beach behind a dune, and is just a long strip of sites with a bath house towards the entrance. It was surprisingly windy to be behind a dune, but since it's still the beach, that's somewhat expected," notes Talon W.

Tips from RVers

Campground amenities: Full hookup sites are available at multiple locations. "Seawind RV Resort is a nice, no-frills RV resort in Riviera, Texas on Baffin Bay. The park is adjacent to the waterfront park, beaches, boat launches, and fishing piers. Our site has views of the bay. The RV park offers large FHU sites with 50 amp," reports Jeff & Steff's Excellent Adventure.

Campsite layouts: Some parks have unusual site configurations. "I'm not sure who came up with the layout of the sites here but it is beyond bizarre. The utilities are on the wrong side of camper and your site is behind your camper in a shared space," warns Kristen W. about Mustang Island State Park.

Maintenance and cleanliness: Dog-friendly campgrounds vary in upkeep standards. At Nature's Own RV Resort, don D. reports, "Tight clean camp site. Laundry was clean and reasonably priced. Hot tub and pool were not a great experience."
