Yarborough Pass — Padre Island National Seashore

Coastal fishing and paddling enthusiasts will find Yarborough Pass offers backcountry camping along Padre Island's bayside waters. This National Park Service campground requires a challenging 1.5-hour drive down the beach at low tide, with the final approach turning inland just before mile marker 15 through soft sand that transitions to packed road surface.

The camping area features existing shade structures on a bulkhead, providing protection from persistent coastal winds that require using vehicles as additional windbreaks. Campers must bring all supplies for self-contained stays, as no services exist at this remote location. The bayside position generates less blowing sand than ocean-facing areas while maintaining water access for fishing and kayaking. For easier access options, campgrounds around Padre Island National Seashore provide developed facilities closer to park entrances.

Epic Bayfront Weekend!

We headed down to Yarborough Pass during a coastal flood warning. Although we did the drive at low tide, it was still slow going.

It took us about 1.5 hours to get to the road turning inland (just b4 mile marker 15).

The first 30ish yards of the road inland was pretty soft sand, but the road was hand-packed and dry the rest of the way.

(Although I could see how it could get soft and rutted after a flood or heavy rain).

The site chose was on a bulkhead and had four shade structures already there. We were the only ones at those four spots all weekend!

A few folks camped another 50 yards down on the beach for a night at the beginning of the week, but we mostly just saw day visitors besides that.

Had to use the trucks as windbreaks, as it was pretty windy most of the weekend.

But there was less blowing sand than on the ocean side. Definitely a cool spot to get away and enjoy some coastal fishing and paddling.

Just make sure to bring all your supplies to be self-contained for the duration of your stay!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access Yarborough Pass on Padre Island National Seashore?

Yarborough Pass is located just before mile marker 15 on Padre Island National Seashore. Access requires driving approximately 1.5 hours along the beach from the entrance point. The pass features a road that turns inland from the beach. Be aware that travel times can vary significantly depending on tide conditions. For safety, plan your trip during low tide as high tides or coastal flood warnings can make the journey more challenging. The entrance to the inland road may have soft sand conditions, so proper vehicle preparation is essential.

What vehicle requirements are needed for Yarborough Pass camping?

A high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended for Yarborough Pass due to soft sand conditions, especially at the entrance to the inland road. Standard passenger vehicles are not suitable for this terrain. Ensure your vehicle has properly inflated tires designed for sand driving, and carry recovery equipment such as traction boards and a shovel. A full tank of gas is essential as there are no services in the area. Consider bringing extra fuel for extended stays. Always check current beach driving conditions at the visitor center before attempting the journey.

What are the camping regulations at Yarborough Pass?

Pack-in/pack-out principles apply, meaning all trash must be removed when you leave. Fires are permitted but must be contained and completely extinguished before departure. Check with the National Park Service visitor center for current regulations regarding length of stay limits, quiet hours, and any seasonal restrictions that might be in effect. Always practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve this unique coastal environment.
