Bardwell Lake camping options feature both Texas Army Corps of Engineers and private sites distributed around the 2,018-acre reservoir. Located in Ellis County approximately 45 miles south of Dallas, the lake sits at 421 feet elevation with moderate to hot temperatures year-round. Most glamping accommodations remain accessible throughout the year, with security restrictions at some locations requiring attention to arrival times.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: COE Bardwell Lake Mott Park maintains clean fishing areas with family-friendly access. "Clean lake, no broken glass, mowed grass, very family oriented," notes Elizabeth C., who enjoys "swimming, hiking, camping" at this location.
Beach activities: The lake offers designated swimming areas with sandy beaches at multiple locations. "Very clean, well kept, mowed, very family oriented. Nice camp grounds, everything you need right there. Swimming area real nice," according to Elizabeth C. at Highview Park.
Boating access: Boat ramps provide direct water access for various watercraft. "Mott park is a fantastic campground for lake activities! At the time of my visit the facilities were clean. The park was well cared for and the sites were all pretty good," reports Dude R., highlighting the boating opportunities.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Campers appreciate the room to spread out at High View. "Very pretty lake views and tons of grass. My dog loved going for runs through the grass (while on her leash)," shares Dani K., who also noted the availability of "electricity, water, and covered picnic tables."
Sunset views: Many campsites offer direct water views with memorable sunset opportunities. Elizabeth C. simply states "Beautiful sunsets" when describing her experience at High View, adding that the area provides "swimming, camping, the whole 9 yards."
Safety and security: Regular patrols create a secure environment for families. "Local sheriff's dept and park ranger made several trips through the park which made it feel secure," reports Derrick A., who stayed at High View and appreciated the "friendly staff at check-in" and "peace and quiet."
What you should know
Gate closure restrictions: Several campgrounds implement strict gate closing times that can affect late arrivals. "If you're looking for a late night stop, this isn't it. Gates lock at 10 pm. We couldn't get in," warns Reagan K. about Highview Park. Another camper had a similar experience: "When we arrived at 11pm the gates were locked with no one in site."
Varied bathroom conditions: Facilities range from well-maintained to occasionally problematic. "They had some showers and toilets working again when I went. Hot water was very nice! Not the cleanest bathrooms but not the worst either," notes a camper at High View.
Limited shade: Liberty Hill Park Campground and other sites can have exposure issues during hot months. "Great views, clean sites, however there's very limited shade," mentions Drew about his glamping experience at Bardwell Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Playground availability: Some glamping areas include dedicated play spaces for children. At Northside RV Resort, "The park is gated and secure. There are 4 washer and dryers and showers for all 124 spots," and includes "Two dog parks and one small play ground for kids," according to Tex B.
Budget-friendly options: COE parks offer lower rates than private glamping sites. "I appreciate this location. The view, electricity, water, and showers was very nice at such an affordable price. $14 for the space very appreciate," shares Wahine K. about Mott Park.
Swimming access considerations: Look for designated swimming beaches with gradual entries. "The lake is clean and great for tubing, standup paddle boarding or just swimming. There is also a roped off designated swimming area with a small beach," notes Jennifer B.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for size: Loyd Park accommodates larger rigs in specific areas. "All sites are paved, several are lake front, and the majority of them are well shaded," reports Randy H., who mentions camping there frequently "by ourselves, and with friends."
Leveling challenges: Some sites require additional equipment for proper setup. According to a camper at Liberty Hill Park, "Spaces are close, water pressure is very low" and "Site 11 unlevel" presents challenges for RV setup.
Weather preparedness: Seasonal conditions can affect camping comfort. "Our spot (532) was a little awkward to get in because of the corner and the speed bumps, but not impossible," shares Angela R. about Northside RV Resort, adding that "when it rains, water pours into site and erodes area quickly and will fill your mat with orange clay."
