Best RV Parks & Resorts near Alpine, TX

Several RV parks surround Alpine, Texas, providing convenient bases for exploring the Big Bend region. Lost Alaskan RV Park offers full hookup sites with 50 amp service, level pull-through spots, and clean facilities including showers and laundry. La Vista RV Park, located about 10 minutes south of Alpine on Highway 118, features big-rig friendly sites with water, electric, and sewer connections, though cell service can be limited. "All sites have hook ups, some 30 amp others 50 amp priced accordingly. Sites are very close to each other," notes one RV camper about La Vista. Pecan Grove RV Park in Alpine provides year-round accommodations with 50 amp electrical hookups, water, sewer, and a sanitary dump station. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region's RV campgrounds. Verizon coverage is generally stronger than other carriers, though signal strength diminishes in more remote locations. Propane availability can be limited, with one reviewer noting Lost Alaskan charges a flat $40 fee regardless of fill amount. For those seeking proximity to attractions, Tumble In RV Park in Marfa (about 30 minutes from Alpine) offers 22 sites with both 30 and 50 amp service, while Marathon Motel & RV Park provides year-round access with full hookups approximately 30 miles east of Alpine on Highway 90.

    La Vista RV Park

    Quiet, Views

March 1,2021. Small RV park off Rt. 118 ten minutes south of Alpine. Self check in. All sites have hook ups, some 30 amp others 50 amp priced accordingly. Sites are very close to each other. No water. Could not find a Women’s bathroom, only Men’s and never saw anyone to ask while I was there. No tent sites or sites w/o hook ups. Rough gravel pull through was level and had a few evergreen trees on one side. WiFi weak and unreliable from my site #13. Verizon cell service one bar and unreliable.

With a little investment this could be a very good campground, but currently, it falls short.

Nice park. Water, electric, sewer, dump station, Verizon cell service, showers, flush toilets, very clean, TV cable, WiFi, monthly rates, Good Sam and Escapees discounts. We needed a small amount of propane to top off our tanks and were charged their flat fee of $40.

    Balmorhea State Park Campground

    April 2025

Very clean campground! Sites are nice and playground/group areas have nice green grass. Electric & water hookup. Staff was also great at check in. Spring Fed Oasis pool is cool as well. Coming during the week it isn’t busy & can enjoy it better. Also have great starlink reception here. Cell service available but spotty. Bath houses are in great condition. Very hot water available (which is so nice to have when traveling long term). Great stop passing through Texas.

    Davis Mountain RV Park

    Brand new RV Park

Stayed here for 5 nights on our way from Big Bend NP to Carlsbad Caverns.  If you are looking for fancy this is not the place.  It is a work in progress.  But all the sites are level, pull thru with both 30 and 50 amp service.  It is centrally located for all the attractions in the area particularly Fort Davis National Historic Site and McDonald Observatory.  They have plans to add bathrooms and a laundry facility.  The connections are all new and water pressure is excellent.  Cell service is good - TMobile 3 bars 10 down/6 up, Verizon 4 bars 10 down/19 up.  Verizon tower is within site of the RV park.  They do have wifi available but we did not use it.  At only $20 a night for full hookups while they are new you can't beat it.  Buster and Pam are great owners.  They have been very accommodating.

    Saddleback Mountain RV Park

    Convenient, large spaces

We pulled off I-10 to stay for the night on a cross-country trip. This park is just off the exit and you drive through the gas station entrance to get here, but the park is remarkably quiet and scenic for being in the middle of the desert and right next to the highway. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Friday and the office wasn't open. They have a dropbox that tells you to find a spot and pay the nightly rate in the dropbox. The restaurant is closed, but if you need anything at the gas station, it is very close. For $20, we have water, sewer, and electricity.  The T-Mobile cell service is amazing, but there aren't over-the-air TV channels. The sites are a little close together, but the first half have pretty desert plants between each site. There are clearly some long-term residents, but we felt safe and welcome and would definitely come back as a stopover.

    Saddleback Mountain RV Park

    Worked for an Overnighter

There was no problem finding this campground(CG) as it is right off I-10 adjacent to a Valero gas station. We had paid online, and per the emailed instructions, we went and chose an empty site. After driving through and looking at sites that didn’t have trees that would interfere with our slide-outs, we went into pull-through site 29 with FHUs. As we were only staying overnight, we did not use water and sewer. The CG’s sites are all pull-throughs with FHUs. About 1/4 of the sites are transient workers or full-timers. When we were here towards the end of January, there were plenty of sites to choose from. Our site was plenty long enough for our 40’ 5th wheel and F450. This is a basic CG with no internet, but they have a laundry room on the back of the Saddleback Steakhouse and Bar that has seen better days. There’s also an unmanned office with instructions and a drop box for campers without a reservation. There were plenty of sites that have clear shots to the sky for satellite. We got 3 bars on Verizon. We should have used our sound machine as there’s a lot of road noise from I-10. There’s no formal dog park, but there is plenty of room to walk your dog. Other than the price, one of the reasons we stayed here was the raving reviews by other campers on the Saddleback Steakhouse and Saloon, especially their ribeyes. Boy, were we disappointed. We were expecting a big Texas-style steak. The steak was maybe 1/4 inch thick, and the hand-cut fries were greasy. This may be the only place in the US that still allows smoking inside. They live by their own rules here. On the bright side, this dive-type bar was interesting and somewhat entertaining depending on your views as this establishment is clearly pro-Trump and anti-Biden.

    Lost Alaskan RV Park

    Good Choice in Alpine

We were on our way to Big Bend National Park and it's really out of the way! Alpine was a good place to spend the night before heading to the park.  We were able to get into the Lost Alaskan with a day's notice and had a nice pull through site on the end of the row. The park had a friendly staff, clean laundry, and a nice bathroom.  We will return to this park the next time we head towards Big Bend!

    Marfa Yacht Club

    Perfect Solitude in Marfa

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 4 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 4 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 3 Customer Service: 4 Cleanliness: 5

This campground is very small with just 8 covered RV pads available with a limit of 32' length. They were "designed with the Airstream in mind" but they seem to be open to any type of trailers as there were 2 non-Airstreamers during our stay. They have their own Airstreams available for rent through AirBnB or else you can bring your own trailer and pull into one of their paved slips. Reserving a site was easy via email and texting with the owner. It was completely contactless and they gave us thorough instructions on how to access the grounds and where to find our site.

They offer 50/30 amps, full hookups, and WiFi. For $50/night right on the outskirts of central Marfa (about 2.5 miles from the center of town), we found the price to be mostly reasonable for the paved, covered spot. We understand the town can be a tourist hot spot so prices are a little higher reflecting that. COVID prevented use of any shared areas, but they seemed to have a common grilling/patio area. They offer two Adirondack chairs at each site, which adds a nice touch. The grounds are on a large open lot and surrounded by ranch lands. The views of the night sky are bar none. Access to the grounds is via a graded dirt road that was very muddy when we left as we had rain for 3 days straight. It did not make access to the grounds difficult, though. Make sure you heed their instructions on how to access the grounds as one of the access roads shown on Google maps actually takes you over high-clearance railroad tracks that could cause RV damage.

A perfect spot for home base to visit Marfa and take in the night sky reserve!

Guide to Alpine

RV camping near Alpine, Texas offers multiple accommodation options throughout the Big Bend region. Located in the Trans-Pecos area at an elevation of 4,475 feet, Alpine experiences cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands, with summer highs averaging 88°F and winter lows around 33°F. Cell service remains variable throughout the region's campgrounds, with stronger coverage near town and diminished signals in outlying areas.

What to do

Visit McDonald Observatory: Located 40 minutes from Fort Davis, the observatory hosts star parties with telescopes for public viewing. "We stayed for almost a week and enjoyed our time in Marathon. The first night we enjoyed looking at the stars with the resident astronomer," notes a visitor to Marathon Motel & RV Park.

Explore Sul Ross University: The campus offers hiking trails with scenic views. "Hiking up to see the desk on the grounds surrounding the Sul Ross campus is just one fun excursion. Also, the Big Bend Museum and Kokernot Field," mentions a camper from Lost Alaskan RV Park.

Visit Fort Davis National Historic Site: Learn about frontier military history at this well-preserved fort. "It's centrally located for all the attractions in the area particularly Fort Davis National Historic Site and McDonald Observatory," writes a reviewer about Davis Mountain RV Park.

What campers like

Dark sky viewing: The region offers exceptional stargazing opportunities. "What makes this campsite special is that it's also a stargazing park and they have star-specialists here every night with telescopes to answer any questions about the night sky!" reports a visitor at Marathon Motel & RV Park.

Swimming options: Several parks offer pools for cooling off. "Clean facilities. Easy to navigate. Friendly management and super fast WiFi! The swimming pool was a delight on a hot summer day," notes a reviewer at Lost Alaskan RV Park.

Unique outdoor shower experiences: Some facilities offer special amenities. "Perhaps the coolest thing we enjoyed was using their new private outdoor showers where you can look up and stargaze while soaking in warm water getting all clean," mentions a camper at Marathon Motel & RV Park.

What you should know

Winter temperature fluctuations: Prepare for cold nights even when days are mild. "We stayed for almost a week and enjoyed our time in Marathon. The rest of the week we stayed cozy in our warm RV at night as it got really cold!" reports a visitor at Marathon Motel.

Mineral water considerations: Water quality varies by location. "The only thing that wasn't great is that the water is hard and has a very high mineral content. It's totally fine to drink, but if you're sensitive to that kinda thing, take that into consideration. It does leave a white crust on stuff," notes a camper at Marathon Motel & RV Park.

Tent site variations: Some parks offer dedicated tent facilities. "Great covered tent sites. Cooled off at night. Clean pool and bathroom/showers," writes a visitor at Lost Alaskan RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Check playground conditions: Playground quality varies between parks. "Playground was ok… had seen better days and was a little lopsided. Pool was closed and we were sad to not know this ahead of time," warns a visitor at Lost Alaskan RV Park.

Consider family-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with amenities for children. "The park itself was well maintained and they have outdoor showers, kinda nice," mentions a camper at Marathon Motel & RV Park.

Research common areas: Some parks offer gathering spaces. "It has a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. If you stay up late enough you might even be able to see the strange Marfa lights!" notes a visitor at Tumble In RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Check laundry facilities: Laundry quality and cost vary by location. "Laundry was adequate with 6 washers and dryers. Took two rounds in dryer for each load. I think $1 for wash and $1.50 to dry," reports a camper at Lost Alaskan RV Park.

Verify site spacing: Site dimensions and privacy differ substantially. "Small, quiet, very clean. Nice view. Very nice restrooms and shower facilities. Water, sewer and elec. Picnic table at site," notes a visitor at La Vista RV Park.

Consider satellite access: Satellite reception varies by location. "There were plenty of sites that have clear shots to the sky for satellite. We got 3 bars on Verizon," mentions a camper at Saddleback Mountain RV Park.
