    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Hidden gem in west Texas

In the middle of the oil fields is Willow Draw Campground in Monahan Sandhills State Park. The campground is a beautiful drive through the winding sandy hills. They have a good amount of RV spots, with 50 amp, water, and a dump station on the way out. Limited pull through sites that seem to book quickly, but plenty of open back in sites that are nicely spaced. We booked site 22, a back in site up against a large dune hill. It was not easy to back a 55ft long rig into, probably one of the worst sites for a big rig, but we still managed. We just had to park our tow vehicle weird.

The dunes are awesome and beautiful. The park is incredibly clean and the rangers do great work patrolling and keeping the campsites safe and clean.

The price for camping is incredibly cheap, especially for what you're getting! The views from each site are breathtaking. All are within a short walk to the dunes. You can rent snow sleds and go sand boarding. Theres gorgeous wildflowers all over in the spring and summer and the sunsets are always 10/10 here. We heard the distant songs of coyotes and smelled the oil from the fields. A very unique experience and a must for RV camping checklists!

    Mesquite Oasis RV Park

No shaded area, a bit pricey for what you get

$50 a night with full hookup, but a little pricey in my opinion for what you get. No shaded area. Does have a pool and laundry area. Roses BBQ within 6 minutes away was good. Site was pull through. There are long term campers.

    Sand Surfing

This was a great place to stop on our roadtrip out West! We have actually been here twice, it's so convenient and right off I20 near Odessa! The workers are so friendly and we all five loved sand surfing!! There are pull through sites with electric/water hookups, picnic table, fire ring, grill and a shade shelter! There is also a bathhouse with showers and restrooms! So much fun, don't pass it by!

**UPDATE: We have been here 4 times now! Always great!!!

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Small, convenient, quiet CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 28 for 5 nights in early/mid September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, but narrow, as are the pull-through sites. The sites themselves all seemed mostly level. The CG was very quiet and peaceful. There were only 3 or 4 other campers in the CG while we were there. Our site, 9, was a pull-through, as were several, but some were back in. There isn’t any shade, but we had a decent breeze, which helped. Our dog loved frolicking in the sand dunes, but do watch out for goathead burrs, she found a few.

AT&T coverage was pretty good with 2 bars of LTE service and speeds up to 17 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 20 MB/s.

    Goldenrod RV Park & Propane

    Wonderful

I have lived here for 9 months. The office staff are friendly and helpful. They are family friendly and pet friendly which is a big deal for me. The people in the park are respectful. I have made many friends here and it feel we are more like a family then we are friends. When you have a problem with something, the office gets it taken care of really fast. I love the fact that they have shower houses and a laundry facility. This is a great place to stay at. I would recommend this place to everyone.

    Jal Lake Park

    It’s not bad!

We stayed here for a dump and refill after few days of boonedocking. It has water, 20/30/50amp and a dump station. No sewer but dump station is pretty close by with clear signs. There’s 6 spots for RVs to park. Enough space for big rigs and can park additional car on the side. There is a shaded picnic area and a grill.

There is a lake beside close by with a beautiful sunset which was a plus and the best part is, it’s FREE!

Downside is it’s off of a pretty busy road, so some noise from cars passing by.

Verizon had LTE 3 bars but not that fast for some reason. Video streaming lagged a bit.

There were about 2-3 other RVs staying and going. There is a 72hr limit. There is nothing around in the town though. Lowes grocery did have little more than necessities.

Would come again for quick refill.

    Midessa Oil Patch RV Park

    Looks rough but friendly

Park itself looks a little rough, and is close to the highway and railroad. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Maintenence helped my partner with our tail lights and refused pay. $40 for a pull through and full hookups. Cheap laundry.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

You think you're at the beach

I stayed here five nights in site number three, which is a pull through and a great view of the windmill and the day use parking lot.. In January, it gets pretty cold at night around freezing, but warmed up nicely every day. One day was so windy. It was rocking my fifth wheel like it's never rocked before. Yes, I live alone. It was very quiet with little noise from I 20. I did hear a train whistle, but then you can hear a train whistle just about everywhere in the entire state of Texas in the morning. I did see very small prints in the freshly blown sand. Watch out for rodents getting into your RV.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Sand dunes in Texas?!

General: Small (25-site) campground in one loop. Temporary park headquarters as the huge visitor center at the entrance was under construction when we were there.

Site Quality: Sites have paved driveways, covered picnic shelters, bbq, electric hookup, and water a spigot. Some sites are back-in and some pull-through. We watched some larger rigs try and fit into the back-in sites, which are smaller than the pull-throughs. Our site (25) seemed to have two picnic tables and two BBQs (there were some on the other side for the site next to us so not sure why there were two in our site unless two campers would come together?)

Bathhouse: There is one all-in-one and one regular restroom with two additional showers (and a connecting door between them. Hot water and soap dispensers but no paper towels. The showers were incredible – hot water, great water pressure, and clean. One of the best campground showers I have ever had!

Activities: Explore the dunes! There are no designated paths; you are free to climb the dunes and explore. Saucers are available to rent for $6 and wax for $1. The sunsets are beautiful. The constantly shifting sand makes beautiful patterns and great photographs. If the moon is not full, night sky photography.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here exploring the dunes (and the incredible shower!).

Guide to Monahans

RV campgrounds near Monahans, Texas provide convenient access to West Texas attractions while serving as practical bases for exploring the region's unique desert landscape. Located in an area characterized by arid conditions with summer temperatures frequently exceeding 100°F, these facilities serve travelers navigating through the Permian Basin. Winter visitors should prepare for nighttime temperatures that can drop significantly, creating challenging conditions for unprepared campers.

What to do

Sand dune exploration: Monahans Sandhills State Park features 3,840 acres of sand dunes rising up to 70 feet high where visitors can rent sand disks for sledding. "Close to Monahans Sand Hills State Park where you can sand sled!" notes a visitor at The Rise at Monahans - Lodge and RV Park.

Local barbecue: The region offers distinctive West Texas barbecue options within short driving distances of most campgrounds. A camper at Mesquite Oasis RV Park shares, "Roses BBQ within 6 minutes away was good. Site was pull through."

Highway access: The strategic location along I-20 makes Monahans an efficient stopover point when traveling across Texas. "We stayed one night, on our way to Big Bend from Dallas. Great 'no frills' stopping point," reports one traveler about The Rise at Monahans.

What campers like

Security features: Several RV parks prioritize safety with comprehensive perimeter protection. A visitor at Out West RV Resort notes, "Clean, secure location. Nice fully gated park with full hook ups."

Convenient facilities: Certain parks maintain community amenities that enhance longer stays. At Park Place RV, a camper appreciates, "Amazing playground and pool for families beautiful shower facilities, lots of washer and dryers. Full hook ups."

Helpful staff: Management at several parks actively assist with parking and logistics. At Midessa Oil Patch RV Park, a visitor observed, "Staff escorted me to the site and helped me back in (which was very nice)," while another noted, "Maintenance helped my partner with our tail lights and refused pay."

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Proximity to Interstate 20 creates constant background noise at many locations. "Located next to I-20 so get used to lots of truck noise all night long," warns a visitor to Midessa Oil Patch RV Park, while another camper at Tra-Park RV Park mentions, "Road noise from I-20 - not a bother for us."

Limited shade: The desert environment provides minimal natural protection from sun exposure. One camper at Mesquite Oasis RV Park states, "No shaded area, a bit pricey for what you get. $50 a night with full hookup."

Site spacing: Many parks feature compact layouts with limited privacy between sites. A visitor to Tra-Park RV Park observes, "The sites are crammed together with barely enough room for a table between the rows," while another notes, "Level gravel spots. FHUs were in good order."

Tips for camping with families

Check pool availability: Some parks maintain swimming facilities that provide critical relief from summer heat. "Amazing playground and pool for families," confirms a visitor at Park Place RV, making it suitable for extended stays with children.

Research pet policies: Most RV campgrounds in the area welcome pets but may have specific requirements. At Ana's RV Park, reviews indicate, "Pets allowed, kids welcome, camper friendly."

Confirm Wi-Fi reliability: Internet access varies significantly between facilities, affecting entertainment options for children. "Would of gotten 5 stars, not having wifi impeded work," reports a camper at Tra-Park RV Park, indicating potential connectivity challenges.

Tips from RVers

Check site dimensions: Many parks accommodate large rigs but space constraints may create challenges. "The lots are small. Had a back-in site," reports a visitor to Midessa Oil Patch RV Park, while another notes, "Not bad for just an overnight stay, however the lots are small."

Confirm tent camping options: Despite advertising tent accommodation, availability may be restricted. A potential visitor to Kings Road RV Park reports, "I didn't camp here because when I called, the receptionist said they have RV sites and don't have tent sites."

Consider seasonal pest conditions: The desert environment experiences unexpected insect activity during certain periods. "For some reason even though this is located in the desert, it is covered with mosquitos," warns a camper at Midessa Oil Patch RV Park, suggesting travelers pack appropriate repellent.
