El Cosmico is a place you have to experience, even if you just stay in your own tent! They have hot tubs, a hammock garden and an amazing gift shop. I enjoyed it, but it is quite pricey if you stay in one of the trailers. I would have been okay just staying in the trailer for one night if I had known camping was an option when I booked :) I will say, the trailer’s outdoor shower was pretty sweet. The trailer was amazingly decorated and had plenty of space for two people!
Tucked away in Marfa, el cosmico is an excellent retreat from the city. With traditional bring your own tent spaces to Safari tents, yurts and old-school RVs. They have a space for what you are yearning for. Check in and guest house complete with a shop and indoor showers sit at the front over looking the campsite and hot tubs. The hot coffee in the morning was very much welcomed before we set out to see the town and surrounding are exhibits that are all close by. I would definitely recommend. We stayed in a safari tent complete with a wonderful bed, side tables, lamp fan and power.
Love Alpine with its street art, food trucks, quaint downtown and history. Hiking up to see the desk on the grounds surrounding the Sul Ross campus is just one fun excursion. Also, the Big Bend Museum and Kokernot Field.
The campground is set on the outskirts of Alpine and has pine trees around it. Unfortunately most sites that I saw don’t have much, if any, shade. That being said, there are lots of plusses for this campground. The staff is great, the site I was in was level and had full hook ups, the campground laundry is excellent and there’s also a community recreation room.
Good rates for a nice stopover in a great location in Big Bend country with a pet park, gift shop, pool/playground and cabins.
This place is really cool and in the great town of marfa! We didn’t stay in one of their trailers or cabins but rather booked a camping spot through hipcamp. This turned out to be just a camp anywhere you want in the parking lot situation which was a little disappointing. Bathrooms are open air and outside as welll, so be advised if you are visiting in the winter.
If you are from Texas, then you already know the legend that is Prude Ranch. I'm not sure when they added RV spots to the Ranch but you can't imagine how excited I was to find out they had. There are about two dozen spots with full hookup 30/50 in two separate camps (upper and lower). The lower camp sites in a pecan field at the entrance to the ranch while the upper camp sites sit smack dab in the middle of the cabins and stables. This isn't your average RV park. Prude Ranch is known statewide for its summer camp which sees hundreds of kids over 4 to 8 weeks in the summer. The rest of the year, Prude is a working horse ranch and there is plenty to do. My son and I took two, two-hour trail rides with our Wrangler Andy who was a wealth of information. There are a couple other RV parks in the area but honestly, if you dont day here you're really missing out. We camped at the lower site which took a little bit of leveling (6" in the front and 2" passenger). The deer come in at night and you can sit and watch them wander. Town is only 5 miles down the road with grocery open til 8pm and a family dollar for those items you didnt realize you forgot until you got here. If you come, you must ride the trails, its an amazing experience.
We were on our way to Big Bend National Park and it's really out of the way! Alpine was a good place to spend the night before heading to the park. We were able to get into the Lost Alaskan with a day's notice and had a nice pull through site on the end of the row. The park had a friendly staff, clean laundry, and a nice bathroom. We will return to this park the next time we head towards Big Bend!
March 1,2021. Small RV park off Rt. 118 ten minutes south of Alpine. Self check in. All sites have hook ups, some 30 amp others 50 amp priced accordingly. Sites are very close to each other. No water. Could not find a Women’s bathroom, only Men’s and never saw anyone to ask while I was there. No tent sites or sites w/o hook ups. Rough gravel pull through was level and had a few evergreen trees on one side. WiFi weak and unreliable from my site #13. Verizon cell service one bar and unreliable.
With a little investment this could be a very good campground, but currently, it falls short.
(Full disclosure: I am on the board of nonprofit Mobile Comunidad, which operates the Mountain View Lodge & Cafe)
The Mountain View is a great place to stay while visiting the Davis Mountains / Big Bend region, convenient to McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, Marfa, Alpine, and further to Big Bend National Park. All proceeds from the lodge and cafe help fund programs such as free lunches for school kids, food pantry food distributions, a bookmobile and more. You will enjoy our hospitality and the cafe serves a great breakfast and the best burgers around.
Our staff will go out of their way to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. Check our reviews on other sites to see how folks like us. Happy trails!
Loved this place! Price was super reasonable for FHU at $35 a night! We had a site in the back so it was a little more spread out and away from the road. Might not have been so happy with the front sites. This place has great landscaping and a beautiful courtyard that boasts a nightly fire. Marathon is also the darkest city in the USA so you get to see tons of stars. If you’re lucky some nights they pull out the telescope.
It’s about a 45 minute drive to the Big Bend gate and maybe another 30 minutes to a hike or exhibit inside the park from there. 30 minutes to Alpine and maybe a hour to Marfa. Not much in the town it’s self but what’s there is super quant and cute.
We would 100% recommend and stay here again.
I have lived in Texas 50 yrs and had never been to West Texas...Mind BLOWN!!! We went in January and, while cold the first part of the week...17 degrees...being Texas, it was 80 by Friday...lol! The spring stays between 73-76 year round! My Husband even braved the cold and jumped in...Although, he claims the water was not that warm..LOL! The campgrounds had elec/H20 sites, covered picnic areas and nice grills. AND WARM SHOWERS!!!. And the most AMAZING SUNSETS I've ever seen!!! The pool is crystal clear and about 25 ft deep and the toe nibbling fish are cool too! I Highly recommend you look this place up, however, I saw that it's closed until March of 2019 for repairs to the pool itself and the campgrounds....BUMMER!
Lovely RV Park and Motel. Clean and well kept facilities. Iconic location of several scenes from Paris, Texas.
We don’t like being on a schedule so we don’t make reservations prior to leaving home. We have a van that we sleep in so if things don’t work out for a nite, we can use a rest stop. We found Marathon Motel and RV camping on The Dyrt. What a cute place! Surrounded by mountain views and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, night skies that are breathtaking, you really know your deep in the heart of Texas (clap, clap, clap!)
I stayed here for two nights during the Texas snow and deep freeze of Feb. 14 to 16, 2021. It was comfortable to be in the company of so many as the park was packed, RV Parks are not my thing so I left on snow covered roads (no snow plows in TX) and drove 80 miles south. The manager called me a few hours after I left sounding in disbelief and to confirm that I had relinquished my spot. I’m from Maine. We have winter and snow covered roads are normal.
ThIS RV Park has all the amenities of a KOA including friendly service, nice dog walk and play area, clean bathroom, and laundry, and spotless grounds beneath the pines. The end of row sites cost an additional $10, but my dogs enjoyed the bonus of a large, private grassy area and a couple of shade trees offered on site A20.
All and all a great place to stay. Close to town yet still quite, you can see some amazing sunsets on the far end of the camp. Very well managed camp, only complaint I would have is the internet is somewhat intermittent but only a issue if you need it!
This park was recommended by another camper as well as seeing it on Dyrt. Super nice staff who actually helped us stay longer due to a dangerous ice storm. Exceptional laundry facilities and a very clean park.
Great covered tent sites. Cooled off at night. Clean pool and bathroom/showers.
Clean facilities. Easy to navigate. Friendly management and super fast WiFi! The swimming pool was a delight on a hot summer day.
Nice clean sites that are spacious and not on top of your neighbor.
Location is good for visiting the area if you need to be connected - wifi was good enough close to the office and cell service was also good enough. Since going any closer to Big Bend means you drop off completely, this was a must for us. That said, it’s a solid 1.5+ hour drive to the park.
Laundry was adequate with 6 washers and dryers. Took two rounds in dryer for each load. I think $1 for wash and $1.50 to dry.
Playground was ok… had seen better days and was a little lopsided. Pool was closed and we were sad to not know this ahead of time.
Love this place. Nice everything. No online reservations so go old school, pick up the phone and call them.
Nice park. Water, electric, sewer, dump station, Verizon cell service, showers, flush toilets, very clean, TV cable, WiFi, monthly rates, Good Sam and Escapees discounts. We needed a small amount of propane to top off our tanks and were charged their flat fee of $40.
Small, quiet, very clean. Never met the owner but the mgr. Was very nice. Nice view. Very nice restrooms and shower facilities. Water, sewer and elec. Picnic table at site. No fires! Free wifi. No cell service.
No one on site you make your reservation and that's the last time you hear a human voice. All facilities are closed so no propane, laundry or showers available. No place to dump your garbage. What do they have? Water and electricity. You give them your credit card info and that's it. Pro: beautiful scenery and shaded spots.
Booked two nights at MYC on a whim, after we cut our stay at Big Bend short, and ended up adding another day we enjoyed it so much. The sites are thoughtfully laid out: even though they're close together, they're staggered so each site has unobstructed views. There are structures at each site for the RVs--would definitely help with the heat in the summer and we loved having the extra space around the camper during a rain storm. The roof does trap the sound of air conditioning, and this could cause some annoyance between neighbors who don't agree on whether it's nice enough to sleep with the windows open.
I didn't get to check out the pool because of the weather, but still enjoyed the quirkiness of a shipping container pool. The laundry/bathroom facilities were not completed but will be a nice additions once they're available.
We traveled into Marfa each day and loved the town. The one downside was the road leading to the MYC--it was gravel and when we were there, suffered from washboarding that really jostled things around in the trailer. More than an annoyance than anything, hope that it's fixed next time we stay!

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 4 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 4 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 3 Customer Service: 4 Cleanliness: 5
This campground is very small with just 8 covered RV pads available with a limit of 32' length. They were "designed with the Airstream in mind" but they seem to be open to any type of trailers as there were 2 non-Airstreamers during our stay. They have their own Airstreams available for rent through AirBnB or else you can bring your own trailer and pull into one of their paved slips. Reserving a site was easy via email and texting with the owner. It was completely contactless and they gave us thorough instructions on how to access the grounds and where to find our site.
They offer 50/30 amps, full hookups, and WiFi. For $50/night right on the outskirts of central Marfa (about 2.5 miles from the center of town), we found the price to be mostly reasonable for the paved, covered spot. We understand the town can be a tourist hot spot so prices are a little higher reflecting that. COVID prevented use of any shared areas, but they seemed to have a common grilling/patio area. They offer two Adirondack chairs at each site, which adds a nice touch. The grounds are on a large open lot and surrounded by ranch lands. The views of the night sky are bar none. Access to the grounds is via a graded dirt road that was very muddy when we left as we had rain for 3 days straight. It did not make access to the grounds difficult, though. Make sure you heed their instructions on how to access the grounds as one of the access roads shown on Google maps actually takes you over high-clearance railroad tracks that could cause RV damage.
A perfect spot for home base to visit Marfa and take in the night sky reserve!
$40 for 2 people on bikes with one tent. That’s the highest price we’ve ever paid for one night of tent camping with our own gear. This is a very nice place though. The camping area was spacious and we had a picnic table and small tree next to where we set up. Bathrooms, outdoor showers that are nice and hot with good pressure, sinks available. The self check in was great- book on Hipcamp.com, show up, grab a map of the campground and find your spot on your own. The other lodging options, ie tipis, canvas tents, yurts, etc seemed pretty cool but it appears they book up fast this time of year (week of Thanksgiving). The campground is close to town where you can find food and groceries. The only problem I find with these types of campgrounds is that there are a lot of novice campers who are inconsiderate of their noise late at night and in the early morning. Some people do actually want to sleep!
Before I begin this review, you must understand that it is not like what it once was. It is a busy resort campground with a cult following.
The safari tents are comfortable and spacious. Perfect for basecamp. They definitely arent cheap, but they are definitely worth every penny. The host was very nice and hospitable.
We went in March, arrived after dark, and departed very, very early. It snowed in the morning, so be ready for any extreme weather surprises in the desert!
