Best Equestrian Camping near Pierre, SD

Richland Reservoir Dispersed Camping provides primitive equestrian access in the South Dakota prairie approximately 20 miles south of Pierre. The area features open grassland terrain suitable for horse trailers with ample parking space on level ground. No designated horse corrals or stables exist on site, but the expansive grounds allow for portable corrals or highlines. A vault toilet serves as the only permanent facility at this free camping area. The reservoir offers water access for horses, though campers report seasonal fluctuations in water levels. Wildlife sightings are common, with visitors noting deer, antelope, and pheasants throughout the surrounding grasslands. Limited cell service exists with generally one bar of Verizon coverage reported by multiple campers.

The nearby Fort Pierre National Grassland encompasses over 115,000 acres of public land accessible to horseback riders. The road accessing Richland Reservoir features clay composition that becomes problematic when wet, potentially causing vehicles with horse trailers to become stuck after rainfall. No reservation system exists, operating on first-come, first-served availability. The site experiences moderate use during hunting seasons, particularly for grouse hunters. Sheriff's Dam, located nearby, offers an alternative dispersed camping option for equestrians when Richland becomes crowded. Summer conditions typically include significant wind exposure with no natural shade beyond a small tree shelter. Basic camping etiquette applies, including packing out all horse manure and feed. During spring, wildlife viewing blinds can be reserved through the ranger station to observe prairie chicken mating rituals.

    Great Campground!

We stopped here on our way across South Dakota, and it was the perfect place. It’s right off the interstate and is extremely well-managed and clean. They have lots of yard space to walk dogs along their property, and the staff was incredibly nice and helpful throughout our stay!

    Note of caution

We actually never made it to the site. There was a big thunderstorm about an hour before we left the main road to this site. When we turned on to the road leading to this place we got stuck on the road. It seems that the road is clay and when it gets wet it becomes very difficult to travel on. Although the road is flat and level our Ram Van with all-terrain tires got stuck. After 3 hours of placing sticks and other things under our tires we managed to get out. Spent the night in a nice free park in Pierre.

    Two beautiful spots for boondocking

Richland Reservoir has a vaulted toilet, lots of wildlife, and quiet. It was windy for my stay so be prepared for that. So far no rattlesnakes or ticks or chiggers but there was a bald eagle hunting the reservoir. For spring, blinds are reservable at the ranger station to view the prairie chickens and grouse doing their mating rituals. I used a cell booster with a 20ft antenna to get cell service. Your mileage may vary. You can find water and a dump station at Fischers Lilly Park in Pierre to the north. If this site is to crowded Google Sheriff's Dam which is just down the road. Google gets you pretty close. That is another lovely site, but has no vaulted toilet.

    Nice little stop over

We stopped for 1 note on the way west to Mt. Rushmore. It is a nice little park with a friendly staff that likes to show folks the garden. Ultra clean RR's and showers with nice tile and woodwork. Definitely a stop over as Presho is a 1 horse town!

    New Frontier RV Campground

    Lovely sunrise!

We were just there for the night, driving through. We found friendly staff, very clean bathrooms, and a good location, close off I 90, and east walk to a corner store. Would stay here again.

And, as our dogs woke us early, and the sunrise really was lovely.

    Great stopover

We luckily found this place in Presho, SD. The host was a friendly lady named Gwen and the campground was neat and clean. It was an easy stop off I-90. Every site is a gravel pull through with full hookups and trash containers are close to every sight. They also offer free popcorn and coffee. I saw a nice swing set, slide, and basketball goal. Also they have cabins, a restroom, and tent area. Good Sam discount… around $46 for 2 adults and 2 dachshunds. Would stay here again.

    New Frontier RV Campground

    Wonderful shower pressure

We were only staying for a night, but we found this campground just fine.

Plus: amazing hot water and water pressure in the showers. Amazing wifi (best we’ve had available this trip). Most sites had a wooden covered area for the picnic table, which would be very helpful if it rained.

Con: site wasn’t completely level, showers and bathrooms had curtains only, not doors.

There were lots of garbage bins. Other reviews mentioned the tired mobile homes near the entrance. They are separated from the RV park by a chain link fence. The RV side is clean and maintained.
