Little Pee Dee State Park Campground

A quiet and clean state park

Little Pee Dee State Park is a quiet and clean campground on the banks of Lake Norton. Locals often come here for fishing and non-motorized boating.  We were fortunate to witness a mass crayfish event--the recent flooding had brought them out of the swamp and up the spillway, much to the delight of seafood lovers.

The campground had two different campground hosts, and they kept the restrooms and campsites immaculately clean.

Campsites have a fire ring/grate and a picnic table, but no trash cans, and you'll need to bring your trash to a large bin located at the edge of the campsites.

There are some nice sites right at the edge of Lake Norton, but the abundant water plants don't allow you to fish from the side of the lake, and it's not really a swimming lake. These sites accommodate RVs and have water & electric.  If you're on a budget, there are tent-only sites off the water.

The campground recently built a sleeping cabin, which is a cute structure with air conditioning/heat, bunk beds, and a free-standing bed (the cabin sleeps four, total). Guests can use a fire ring and Adirondack chairs, hammock, and grill.

The park also has a nice shelter for use.

There is no WiFi here, and cellular internet is spotty. There isn't a camp store, but the Ranger Station does have ice, firewood, and a small number of souvenirs for sale.

    Florence RV Park

    Drive-By RV Parking Lot Community

This spot is so close to I95 (look for exit 169) that you’ll both feel and hear the swoosh of passing by traffic 24/7. So, while you’ll incur ease and convenience, that will come at a cost (privacy and quietude being what you will sacrifice most).  Located in the NE pocket of the Palmetto State, Florence RV Park, while not a destination per se, could be a nice (and incredibly easy) layover on your trip destination to anywhere else up or down this major east coast highway artery.

Despite the location, this spot has a lot to offer: an intimate little public pool behind the management office, WiFi hotspots, dog park, scattered picnic tables (in pretty good condition), kid’s playground, 20 / 30 / 50 amp hook-ups, dump station, dog walk area, catch & release fishing pond, propane refueling station, vending machines, small pond for fishing, basketball court, volleyball, badminton and horseshoe rings. There’s even 4-5 log cabins for rent at the front of the property (with full access to all the highway noise) and of course, good old fashioned on-site laundry facilities along with a mini-store that has most of the basics covered as well as fairly spartan shower / bathing facilities.

Insider’s tip? Here's a few: (1) The further east you are on the property, all the better as you’ll be positioned as far away from I95 traffic and noise; (2) If tent camping, I highly recommend spots #A7 – A13 and if you are RV’ing I recommend #L9 – L18 as well as any of the locations on J, K and F11 – F16; (3) There’s a lot to explore near here, from the Grand Strand of South Carolina, of course, Myrtle Beach and even Darlington Raceway, so if you don’t mind the overpopulated location with its westerly view of non-stop traffic, then this could be a good place to stop for the night or from which to launch your exploration of the area; (4) If you’ve looked at this RV campground’s website, don’t be fooled by the pictures – I don’t think any of them were actually taken of the place, save for the pond, and that was a close-up; and (5) If you are looking for a nearby spot to sample the local fare, I recommend checking out The Drive-In Restaurant with its 50s era nostalgia, big juicy burgers, fried everything, homemade onion rings and thick, creamy chocolate shakes.

    Happy Camping!

    Pirateland Family Camping Resort

    Perfect ocean front spot

Very nice park! We had ocean front spot site 695. Spot was sandy and looked a little sketchy to back into, looks as if someone got stuck. We ended up backing up just fine with no problems and pulled out just fine as well. Bathrooms were close and very clean, great water pressure. They pick your trash right at your spot every morning. Had a minor electrical problem, called and they were right there vey quick and fixed the issue. Lots of things to do, Pool, lazy river, splash pad, and kayak/peddle boats. Putt putt cost money but it’s available. Gulf cart rentals as well. The ocean beach is so beautiful and it was not busy. Just a perfect spot. I recommend going to Broadway on the beach for things to do in the area.

We did how ever have family fly in and rented a cabin. Sharon from the office was not so friendly she only deals with cabin rentals so if your here to camp in campground it’s a great place!

Pedro's Campground at South of the Border

    Roadside RV Amusement Park

If you haven’t been to a roadside circus lately or don’t want to shell out the dough for Disney World, then this particular RV amusement park location just off of I-95 and due south of the North Carolina/ South Carolina border may just be the perfect spot for you.

With a wide-array of parallel, elongated parking lanes for your parking pleasure, all of the sites come equipped with the typical 30/ 50 amp electrical hook-ups, waste disposal and water connections. There’s the standard picnic table, fire ring/BBQ, garbage receptacles, 3-4 communal bathhouses and even a handful of community BBQ’s.

The hosts, who work out of the Camp Pedro Store/ Office are incredibly nice and offer pricing by the night or week. There’s not a ton of amenities to pick and choose from– APART FROM THE NON-STOP LINEUP OF AMUSEMENT PARK options you will find everywhere! But the campground itself features 2-3 community playgrounds, group BBQ’s and the everything-you-need store. And while I looked, there’s no pool to speak of.

Insider’s Tip? Near this RV parking lot, you do have access to Betsy Jackson Bay if you want to get away and off the beaten path a bit to explore nature… otherwise, head back to Pedro’s, put on your silly hat, load up the car full of tchotchkies and get your fill of this whacky Tex Mex experience!

    Happy Camping!

    Myrtle Beach KOA

    Rustic Cabin Check in delay

We just visited the Myrtle Beach KOA and stayed in one of their rustic camping cabins. First the good — The staff we dealt with were pleasant and helpful. The campground was generally clean and there was a reasonable amount of space between the sites. Now the bad — we arrived at 4:30pm to check in and found that the camp store closed at 4:00pm - everyday. For those who forgot something or needed to pick up some ice or other necessity, you would have to leave the campground to get it. Second; upon arrival (4:30) we were told that none of the rustic cabins were ready and to come back in an hour. Not a great way to be welcomed. Next, the shower/bath house appeared clean but there was a distinct smell that made it feel like it might not have been that clean. Finally, the KOA is right downtown, so there is a good deal of noise from outside the campground. Lots of sirens, fireworks, and engine noise from US 17(Business). Final analysis: We really don’t like Myrtle Beach (too much of a tourist trap) and we probably wouldn’t come back. We were only there because I had some work to do in the area and needed a less expensive place to stay.

CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard

    Actually 4.8 Stars

Spent the week before Memorial Day and Memorial Weekend at Carrollwoods. This is really a nice campground. The sites are well-spaced with a picnic table, fire pit and grill at each site. There’s a pool that was unfortunately out of service during most of our visit there during the 90-degree heat. It was finally open when the weather cooled. There were not many other campers until the weekend and then there were only a few sites left. The grounds are very spacious. Lots of room to walk with a few short paths that go into the woods. It has one of the best dog parks that I have ever been to. It is very spacious, fully shaded by lots of trees and even has a few man-made hills for the pooches to climb. The only downside was it appeared as if the waste bin hadn’t been empty in several days. I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats. My only negatives were they advertise free WiFi and cable. I wish businesses would not promote poor quality products as “free”. I probably could access their WiFi no more than for 3 times in all the time I was there and would last no more than 10 minutes. The cable had several odd channels and there was so much buffering, it was often unwatchable. My only other issue is that they need to do some cleanup in their gardens. There were several planters with dead plants in them from the year before. Either refill them or get rid of them. The beds are well designed, but needed a good weeding. Even with its flaws, this is definitely a campground I would return to.

    Brunswick Beaches RV Resort

5 miles from Kindred Spirit Mailbox

I came to this campground because of its location about 5 miles from Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island.

The campground was quiet. All the guests were quiet, but friendly.

Water and electric hook-up, laundry on site, showers and toilets behind the camp store office. Great cement picnic tables/benches!

Not close enough to beach unless you have a car or bikes. Parking lot near beach is $10. Pool clean; ice and firewood on premises for sale.

Dump station near entrance/exit. Road into camp is incredibly narrow. 2 vehicles can’t fit; one has to pull over to the side to let another pass by.

This campground used to be a KOA but now it is a Good Sam camp. The road is still named KOA. Address is 7200 KOA Drive, Sunset Beach, NC 28468 (910)579-7562.

Guide to Nichols

Cabin camping near Nichols, South Carolina provides access to both pine forests and coastal attractions within driving distance. The region sits in the Pee Dee River basin with elevations generally below 100 feet and temperatures that rarely drop below freezing in winter. Most cabin rentals require advance payment and weekend minimums during summer months when humidity typically exceeds 80%.

What to do

Lake activities: At Willow Tree RV Resort, visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing, and boating on the property's lake. "Swim beach, pools, game room, laundry, fitness room, patio with table and grill, store, daily trash pickup at your sites, full hookup sites, paved path around the lake," notes Rose S. The resort also features "inflatables" on the lake during summer months.

Visit the vineyard: Cabin guests at CarrollWoods RV Park can walk to wine tastings without leaving the property. "I visited the winery and the two women who own it are helpful and lively. If you visit, you must get one of their wine floats," writes Nancy C. The vineyard makes for a convenient activity during rainy days.

Explore state park trails: Hiking options near cabin accommodations include woodland trails at Little Pee Dee State Park. "The camp sites are set up next to a large pond. From there the trails basically bring you on a trek around the pond. Many geese and birds are easy to spot as they enjoy the water," explains Kami B. Most trails are flat and under two miles, suitable for families with children.

What campers like

Cabin quality: The cabins at Carolina Pines RV Resort receive consistently high ratings. "My grandparents stayed in one of the cabins and these things are off the hook!" reports Joe G. Another visitor mentioned, "Two of my children and their families are renting the tiny houses that are available for rent. My husband and I will be in our camper it will be the hub for the family gatherings."

Privacy levels: Cabins at Willow Tree RV Resort offer more separation than many other properties. "The sites are huge and along the lake where I camped, they are angled so that you don't really see much of your neighbors," shares Rose S. This arrangement provides quiet evenings compared to more densely packed properties closer to Myrtle Beach.

Proximity to beaches: While not directly on the coast, cabin accommodations near Nichols provide reasonable access to beaches. At Myrtle Beach KOA, "it's located 3 blocks from beach. they have shuttles to carry u to beach," explains Mike P. Most cabins are within 45-60 minutes of ocean access.

What you should know

Off-season benefits: Winter cabin rentals offer significantly lower rates and less crowded facilities. "We only stayed here one night as we were traveling to points south. It was February, so not packed full, but a fair amount of 'winter camping' enthusiasts in the park," notes Cyndi B. about the Myrtle Beach KOA. Cabin availability improves dramatically after Labor Day.

Linen requirements: Most cabin rentals require guests to bring their own bedding, towels and pillows. This applies even to premium cabins unless specifically stated otherwise. Pack accordingly or be prepared to visit local stores for supplies.

Wi-Fi limitations: Internet access varies significantly between properties. At CarrollWoods, "I wish businesses would not promote poor quality products as 'free'. I probably could access their WiFi no more than for 3 times in all the time I was there and would last no more than 10 minutes," reports Nancy C. Cabins at Pedro's Campground similarly have spotty connectivity despite claims of Wi-Fi access.

Tips for camping with families

Water features: Properties with swimming options provide essential summer entertainment for children. "Great place for the kids to run around. The pools are saltwater and open late," explains Sean N. about Carolina Pines Resort. Similarly, at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, "Laser Tag. Splash pad. Water slides. Indoor and outdoor pool. Playgrounds. Dog parks. Putt-Putt. Ice Cream. Fishing. Basketball. Volleyball. Horse shoes…and our kids did it all."

Scheduled activities: Look for cabins at resorts with organized programming. "We were delighted to find beautiful scenery, friendly staff and a comfortable campsite that included a picnic table and fire pit. Daddy Joe's is an awesome place to bring the kiddos. A splash park, mini golf, swimming pools and the park has activities throughout the year," reports Barbara S.

Pack entertainment: Not all cabin sites offer activities, especially in rural locations. Little Pee Dee State Park offers minimal structured programming, so families should bring games, sports equipment and nature guides to keep children engaged during their stay.

Tips from RVers

Cabin alternatives: RV travelers sometimes recommend cabin rentals for accompanying non-RV guests. "My husband and I will be in our camper it will be the hub for the family gatherings. Great place for kids to ride their bikes and splash in the water park," explains Michele P. about arrangements at Carolina Pines Resort.

Storage options: For those considering multiple visits to the area, some properties offer cabin rental combined with RV storage services. This approach reduces transportation costs for return visits to the region.

Security considerations: Properties with secured entrances provide additional peace of mind for families. Pedro's Campground offers "Fenced in and safe. You can walk to the restaurants and shops at South of the Border," according to P.J. Security is particularly important during peak tourist seasons when properties operate at full capacity.
