What to do
Waterpark activities: James Island County Park features a 500-foot long lazy river, two 200-foot waterslides, and spray play areas. "Wonderful park with plenty of amenities! We stayed here in October when the water park/pool was closed, but there was still plenty to do with bike rentals and the outdoor adventure area," notes a visitor to James Island County Park Campground.
Fishing spots: Cabins at Short Stay Navy Recreation Area provide direct lake access. "Short-stay is a beautiful camp right on Lake Moultrie a short distance from Charleston, SC. They have descent wifi and a pretty well stocked camp store, but the main attraction is huge Lake Moultrie. Great for fishing, swimming, camping, RV, and much more," reports a guest at Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner.
Paddling experiences: Edisto River offers kayaking opportunities with rentals available at several locations. "We had a great day (despite the super high level of the river) kayaking 23 miles down to Givhan's Ferry," mentions a visitor to Colleton State Park Campground.
What campers like
Natural surroundings: The oak trees create iconic Lowcountry ambiance at many campgrounds. "Beautiful location! Easy spots to get in and out of, not on top of each other. Great WiFi. Super pleasant and helpful staff. Clean bathrooms, Nice dog run, great food truck. Only down sides were the mosquitoes," shares a camper at Oak Plantation Campground.
Dog-friendly facilities: Many cabin locations welcome pets with designated areas. "There are waste bags scattered throughout the park and a huge dog park. (But it's quite far from the campers)," notes a visitor to Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA.
Proximity to attractions: Most cabin accommodations offer convenient access to historic sites. "We wanted to stay close to Charleston and be able to visit the beach, but all the beach campgrounds were full, so we found this KOA. It wasn't a bad drive at all to get to downtown Charleston or any of the close beaches," explains a camper at Charleston KOA.
What you should know
Access restrictions: Foster Creek RV Park requires military affiliation for cabin rentals. "This campground is for Active and retired military and other qualified DOD employees. Very quiet and secure great fishing and beautiful sunsets," explains a guest at Foster Creek.
Bathroom conditions: Facility maintenance varies widely between locations. "The bathhouse area was clean. The park offered fishing, kayak/canoe/paddle boat and paddle board rentals," notes a visitor at Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA.
Reservations needed: Peak seasons require advance booking at most cabin locations. "It's in the middle of town in North Charleston so it's near lots of store but it is loud and the spots aren't very shaded. But it's much cheaper than staying at a hotel and the campground is run by young adults," shares a visitor to Charleston KOA.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Cabin locations with play structures offer activity options. "There are multiple playgrounds and many kid friendly activities to do including corn horn and other games," mentions a visitor to Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA.
Swimming options: Edisto Beach offers both ocean and pool swimming areas. "We had a magical time at Edisto. The Beach campground was just steps from the ocean. Opt for sites 1-12 or 50-75. Bathrooms were great. Shelling was incredible-especially if you walk towards the inlet around low tide," shares a camper at Edisto Beach State Park Campground.
Hiking trails: Several locations feature interconnected trail systems. "There is a one mile loop trail through the woods and along the lake. There are waste bags scattered throughout the park and a huge dog park," explains a visitor to Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA.
Tips from RVers
Site drainage: Some areas experience flooding during heavy rainfall. "Weekend on the marsh w 3 dogs. We had 2 days of heavy rain and some sites flooded, but everything drained well," notes a visitor to Edisto Beach State Park.
Power considerations: Not all cabins provide the same electrical capacity. "There's a small pool, dog park, pasture with cows, and a play area. My favorite feature was the recycling area! Almost no RV parks provide recycling, so the fact that this park does is really nice. Tip: Beware of ant piles," advises a visitor to Oak Plantation Campground.
Road access: Traffic patterns impact arrival and departure ease. "The road in front of campground is extremely busy (Hwy 17) and I wouldn't attempt ever turning left to get out. Just take a right and another right behind campground to get you out. It may take longer but worth your sanity," explains an Oak Plantation Campground visitor.
