Lake Wateree State Park offers several pet-friendly camping options within 20 miles of Great Falls, South Carolina. The park sits at approximately 230 feet above sea level in the Piedmont region. Summer temperatures typically range from 85-95°F with high humidity, while winter nights can drop below freezing between December and February.
What to do
Fishing from shoreline access: At Chester State Park Campground, campers can fish from dedicated areas along the lake. "The lake from the campground has a fairly new access via a ADA compliant walkway with lighting leading to swings, benches and Adirondack chairs surrounding a rock fire pit. There are benches facing the lake for sitting and or fishing," notes Bill C.
Disc golf course: Chester State Park features a professional disc golf course that winds through wooded areas. "There are several trails, and you can rent boats, peddle boats, canoes, and kayaks. There is also a disc golf course. If I had known beforehand, I would have taken my own discs," shares Myron C.
Paddling on Lake Wateree: Cane Creek Park offers kayak rentals for day use. "I load up my kayak once a month or so and paddle around the lake for hours. Trails, shelter areas, and bathrooms are always well taken care of," mentions Emily B. The park has multiple water access points for launching personal watercraft.
What campers like
Quiet weekday camping: Weekday visits provide a more peaceful experience at most area campgrounds. "This campground tends to be booked solid on weekends so important to make reservations. Also not much for stores close by so pack well," advises Ramona K. about Lake Wateree State Park.
Clean bathhouse facilities: Andrew Jackson State Park Campground maintains well-kept facilities despite its small size. "Bathrooms and showers are clean and staff are friendly and helpful! We will be returning soon! The park is located approximately 20 miles from Rock Hill and 30 miles from Charlotte so there is plenty to see and do," writes Laura A.
Level camping sites: Many area campgrounds offer relatively flat camping areas. "We have been camping here for years snd we love the camp ground. The grounds are fairly flat so bike riding is great," says Teresa G. about her experiences camping in the region.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Some campgrounds have spotty connectivity. "No WiFi and rarely did we have cell service but that's not a bad thing! Large sites with some pull through," explains Ramona K. Signal tends to be stronger at campgrounds closer to Interstate 77.
Weekend availability challenges: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially between April and October. "It is relatively small and reservations are difficult to get," notes Kevin B. about Lake Wateree State Park Campground.
Seasonal insect activity: Mosquitoes can be prevalent in summer months. "Only negative was I that I was bitten up by mosquitoes and I used bug spray (obviously I need a better kind) and citronella buckets," shares one camper. Bug activity is typically highest from June through September.
