Winfield - J Strom Thurmond Lake

      Quiet Lakeside Campground

Winfield is a compartively little-known USACE campground situated on a peninsula near the more heavily-traffic Mistletoe State Park. Quiet and peaceful, it's tucked up the Little River and therefore not on the main body of Clarks Hill Lake (Lake Strom Thurmond, if you're form South Carolina) which sees a good deal of boat traffic (pontoon boats in particular) in the summer months. Great for water activities (kayaking, SUP, etc) with awesome evening views.

      Calhoun Falls State Park Campground

Overall, the best state park in SC

We travel and camp at many places across South Carolina but this was our first visit to Calhoun Falls State Park. What a gem! Beautiful scenery, large, spacious lakeside campsites. We enjoyed privacy, lake access from our campsite, and spectacular sunset views over the lake. Rangers and staff at park store are friendly and helpful. We can’t wait to go back.

Very cute place in Kinard, SC

Office was very friendly. They take you to your site which we always so appreciate. Hookups are modern, nice dog park, propane tank for easy fill ups. Fresh donuts anytime, pizza and chicken wings (bone in and bone out) til 6. Very clean and well maintained. Site was perfect for our 43’ Motorhome and dolly. Would definitely stay again.

      Lake Hartwell State Park Campground

      Nice campground, but somewhat dated.

This campground is located just off of I-85 exit 1 in South Carolina, making it a good place for an overnight stop if traveling.  Being an older park, the roads can be quite bumpy and the sites could use some work.  One loop is open year round, but the sites aren't what I would call waterfront although you can see the lake.  A variety of site sizes are available and most are back in, but a few pull throughs are available.  Not a lot of "living" area around the campsites as most of the campground can be rather brushy.

      Tugaloo State Park Campground

      Water all around

Water water everywhere.  On the Georgia side Tugaloo State Park is Located on Lake Hartwell on the Georgia/South Carolina state line.

Getting to the campsites is pretty tight but once you are parked, it is just beautiful overlooking the lake.  Lots of fun for families who enjoy the water.  Also you can see fishing boats zoom to their fishing location at night.  Peaceful and calming rest from the corporate life!

      Mistletoe State Park Campground

      Waterfront seclusion

We camped in one of the tent only walk-in sites located on a peninsula jutting into the lake. We had a ton of stuff, not realizing it was an uphill and pretty long trek, but it was totally worth it. We had the whole place to ourselves, no neighbors, in late March. The sun setting over the water was beautiful, it was quiet even as a few motor boats came in for the night. There is a tiny beach on the tip of the peninsula, picnic tables, and an outhouse. It was my favorite spot of everywhere we stayed on an Alabama-Georgia-South Carolina roadtrip including AirBnB and bed and breakfast.

      Parsons Mountain Lake Campground

      Nice primitive camp ground

Parsons Mountain Recreation Area sits beside a small lake called Parsons Mountain Lake. It is a great fishing spot and it has a roped off swimming area that has no life guard but is six foot deep at the most at the back of it. The brim in the lake will nibble at the hairs on your legs if you have any. The camp sites have gravel and a fire pit for most of them. Nearby to the camp sites there are restrooms and showers though expect spider webs on either as they are used infrequently except at the height of Summer. But the whole area is surrounded by pine trees and most sites are shaded by all of the trees. You will need a South Carolina Fishing licenses to fish. Camp sites are very reasonable. See this site for current fees. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/scnfs/recarea/?recid=47187

Overall a very nice camp ground. Quiet except for the owls and crickets at night.

    Guide to Abbeville

Campsites near Abbeville, South Carolina offer diverse terrain for tent and RV camping across several state parks and recreation areas. The region sits at the edge of the Sumter National Forest with elevation changes creating varied campsites from lakefront locations to wooded retreats. Winter camping remains comfortable with average temperatures rarely dropping below freezing, while summer humidity requires preparation for water-based activities.

    What to Do

Hiking opportunities: At Parsons Mountain Lake Campground, trails range from easy lakeside walks to more challenging routes. "There is a trail that climbs to parson mountain and is recommended to only people who is fit enough because it is strenuous," notes camper Kevin T. The recreation area provides a good starting point for day hikes.

Golfing access: Hickory Knob combines camping with golf course access. "We went specifically to golf, and had a great round. You do need to reserve a tee time," advises Tracy H. The course maintenance happens throughout the day, creating background noise campers should expect during their stay.

Fishing spots: Multiple lakefront campsites provide direct fishing access without needing to travel. At Baker Creek, the shallow inlets create productive fishing environments. "Cool campground surrounded by water," notes Landon T., who enjoyed the lake access despite finding some trails poorly marked.

    What Campers Like

Sunset views: Waterfront campsites at Mistletoe State Park Campground offer spectacular sunset viewing. "We had a true adventure when we stayed there. The place was beautiful we camped overlooking the lake," writes Kirsten W., who recommends securing your tent in lakefront sites due to winds across the water.

Quiet weekday camping: For solitude seekers, weekday reservations provide much quieter experiences. "Nice and quite on the lake. not a big crowd in march," notes Swain K. about Elijah Clark State Park Campground. Most campgrounds report significantly higher weekend occupancy rates.

Beach areas: Several parks maintain swimming beaches with designated areas for water access. "The kiddos enjoyed playing putt putt, the playground and the beach area," mentions Bill C. about Elijah Clark State Park, noting the additional recreational facilities beyond just water access.

    What You Should Know

Site selection considerations: Choose waterfront sites carefully as some have steep drop-offs. "Most of the sites have a nice view of the lake. Some do have a steep drop off, so you'll need to walk to the launch area (dirt slope) for access," warns Tracy H. about Hickory Knob.

Bathroom facilities vary: Facility quality differs significantly between campgrounds. Baker Creek receives consistent comments about bathroom maintenance. "I give it 4 stars mainly because the bathrooms were in disrepair and the hiking trail was poorly marked," explains Landon T.

Site privacy considerations: Many campgrounds have limited privacy between sites. "The campsites offer absolutely no privacy or separation," notes Kara's C. about some sites at Elijah Clark State Park. Request specific site numbers when making reservations if privacy matters to you.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds feature dedicated facilities for children. "From the main entrance is a winding wooded road to the main store. There you find friendly and helpful staff... a mini library you can borrow from and next to that a nature area with a live snake and turtles," explains Bill C. about Elijah Clark State Park.
