Black Moshannon State Park Campground sits within the Moshannon State Forest at 1,900 feet elevation, making it one of the higher-elevation camping destinations in central Pennsylvania. The park's distinctive 250-acre lake gets its dark color from plant tannins in the surrounding bog areas. Most campsites in the region close during winter months, with seasonal operation typically running April through mid-December.
What to do
Hiking at Greenwood Furnace State Park: Take advantage of trails that connect to the larger Rothrock State Forest system. "There's a great beach/picnic area across the state road (heavily trafficked) and ranger programs were held throughout the weekend. We went for a short walk/hike; I recommend taking a picture of the hiking map or being extra responsible & bringing a map...definitely a chance to get turned around," notes Kassie F. from Greenwood Furnace State Park Campground.
Explore historic sites: Visit the former iron industry ruins at Greenwood Furnace. "Beautiful campgrounds with spacious camp sites. Well maintained bathroom and firewood plus ice available at the entrance (this is a great plus for those car/tent camping)," writes Travis S. who appreciates the historical aspects of the park.
Kayaking on calm waters: Raystown Lake at Seven Points offers extensive paddling opportunities. "Nice campground with quiet 250 acre lake for kayaking. Good birding," shares Matthew U. about his experience at Seven Points Campground.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds in the Sandy Ridge area provide well-separated camping spots. "Very pretty campground with a nice clean wash house. The sites are situated nicely, your neighbors are not 'right there'," reports Sandi G. about Seven Points.
Clean facilities: Woodland Campground maintains its grounds and amenities well. "Very clean, could be a bit more level. Great amenities, boat, fish, games, hike," says Charles K. about this private campground option.
Park programming: Educational opportunities abound at state parks. "The park also runs a ton of classes for different things like fly fishing, hiking, etc," mentions Lisa L. about Black Moshannon State Park, showing the value of ranger-led activities.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Prepare for disconnection at most campgrounds. "No phone service, no problem! This campground helped me finally convince my fiance that not all 'campgrounds' are actually waterpark/family fun/RV parking lots," explains Diane T. about Crooked Run Campground.
Weather variability: Mountain elevations create unpredictable conditions. "We came here in mid June so it was a bit chilly at night and warm during the day - bring layers + raincoats as the PA mountain weather can be iffy!" continues Diane T.
Reservation planning: Secure sites early, especially for summer weekends. "Make a reservation way ahead of your date as this campground is very popular and sites book early. It has sites to accommodate any R.V. and lot of tent sites," advises Denise D.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds at multiple parks: Look for kid-friendly amenities. "Great place for kids! We love staying at crooked run campground. Has a beach on the lake. Affordable boat rentals. Bmx track for kids," shares Jackie W. about the amenities at Prince Gallitzin State Park.
