The mountainous terrain surrounding Muncy Valley, Pennsylvania features a range of camping options within state parks and forests. Ricketts Glen State Park Campground, located about 20 miles east of Muncy Valley, offers tent, RV, cabin, and yurt accommodations with access to Lake Jean and the park's famous 22 waterfalls. Worlds End State Park Campground, situated in nearby Forksville, provides similar amenities with electric hookups and cabins along Loyalsock Creek. Loyalsock State Forest maintains several primitive camping areas including Jakersville CCC Campground and Big Hollow Road Campsites, which require permits but offer a more secluded experience. Private campgrounds like Pioneer Campground in Laporte and Whispering Pines Camping Estates in Stillwater complement the public options with additional amenities.

Cell service becomes limited in many areas around Muncy Valley, particularly within the state forests and parks. As one camper noted, "We had zero cell service, but firewood was available on the honor system with trail maps nearby." Most campgrounds operate year-round, though services may be reduced in winter months. Spring brings potential for flooding and muddy conditions at some sites, especially those near creeks and in low-lying areas. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends and fall foliage season when the area's popularity peaks. Campers should be prepared for variable weather conditions, as rainfall can affect site conditions quickly. Hunting seasons, particularly in fall, may impact trail access in certain areas.

Waterfront sites receive consistently high ratings from visitors, with many campgrounds offering lake or creek access. "The sites vary in size quite a bit," reported one camper at Worlds End State Park, "Loop B offers more secluded campsites for tents with a few walk-up sites as well." Site leveling can be challenging at some campgrounds, with several reviewers mentioning the need for blocks or ramps for trailers. The bathhouses at Pennsylvania state parks generally receive positive reviews for cleanliness and maintenance. Wildlife sightings, including black bears, are common in the region, requiring proper food storage. Hiking trails connect many campgrounds to scenic attractions, with the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen and the 59-mile Loyalsock Trail being particular highlights that draw outdoor enthusiasts to the area's campgrounds.

Tiadaghton Campground — Tioga State Forest

    Tiadaghaton State Forest, PA

Roadside site 1/4 mile from the nearest site. You can drive right to the site on Hackett Rd. Very secluded and peaceful. Picnic table and fire ring, but no water or latrine.

    Riverside Campground & Riverside Roadhouse

Great location & proximity to Williamsport

Came thru for a night and wanted to catch a game at the Little League World Series. Stayed here one night and caught an uber to the museum and game. Got the last site for the night. Did a few loads of laundry, ate a good dinner at the restaurant, kids enjoyed the pool and swam in the river. Big huge park and tons of grassy areas. Really lovely. Nice staff.

    Ravensburg State Park Campground

Use lat and long to find peaceful woods by stream

Nice and shaded! No one there but us in site 6, not even a ranger checked on us. Has modern toilets and shower. Most sites are spacious. They have nice raised tent pads. It’s very humid so many picnic tables have green moss.

First come first serve but still had to pay transaction fee! which was annoying for our one night stay as if rather the state parks get that.

Use lat and long coordinates for directions or you will be in the wrong spot.

    Ricketts Glen State Park Campground

    Ricketts Glen not as expected

Arrived mid-afternoon, visitor center/Ranger office was closed, our reservation sheet was available in a mailbox near the door with instructions. No human contact. Park was not mowed, seemed a little rough & unattended. Our full hookup site was large with table and fire ring, and required some leveling. Not much shade in the full hookup loop, so was happy to have electricity for A/C. The beach was a little more than a half mile walk from our site.

    Lakewood Park Campground

    Quiet and new

Lots of good things here. Large sites, new buildings, including the office and all the bathrooms. Only thing missing is a pool. You’re not allowed to swim in the lake although you’re allowed to use floats. The area has not much to do unless you would like the state park, which is close by. Kind of surprised they allow fireworks, as we were here on July 4 weekend. Would definitely come back.

Guide to Muncy Valley

Camping spots near Muncy Valley, Pennsylvania are located in the northeastern portion of the state where elevations range from 600 to over 2,000 feet. The region experiences distinct seasonal changes with average summer temperatures between 70-85°F and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most campsites in the area sit along creek beds or within dense forests, creating natural wind barriers but increasing humidity during summer months.

What to Do

Waterfall hiking: 10-15 minutes from Benton. At Ricketts Glen State Park Campground, visitors can access 22 named waterfalls via well-maintained trails. "The hike is definitely not for the easily winded people, or anyone with bad knees, the hike down was pretty steep at some points but very well maintained! and the hike back up was again steep but maintained!" notes camper Anne P.

Swimming access: Multiple locations. Several campgrounds provide swimming options during warm months. At Pioneer Campground, "The pool down the road was perfect for the kids and just right for adults to get in and cool off," reports Sharon B. Most swimming areas close by early September.

River paddling: 3-hour float trips available. Riverside Campground offers river access with boat rentals. "Took about 3 hours with a lunch stop on island. Nice spots right next to river where we set up lawn chairs in river and let the kids play," according to Shannon C.

Stargazing: Best spring through fall. Limited light pollution creates exceptional viewing opportunities. "The stars are incredible here! I usually come in the fall in October/early November," says Jennifer F. from Whispering Pines Camping Estates.

What Campers Like

Privacy between sites: Varies by campground. At Worlds End State Park Campground, "The sites are spaced a decent amount apart and are generous in size," notes Lee D. Site selection matters as some loops provide more seclusion than others.

Natural soundscapes: Creek noise and forest sounds. Many campers appreciate the acoustic environment. "No cell service, which is refreshing. The sound of the creek nearby is really soothing," reports Katy R. about Worlds End State Park Campground.

Pool amenities: Available at select private campgrounds. Pioneer Campground receives positive reviews for its swimming facilities. "Firewood is available at the office and while we didn't spend time at the pond where there are canoes/kayak for use it was very beautiful," adds Sharon B.

Honor system conveniences: Common throughout the area. Multiple campgrounds operate with limited staffing. "We were invited to the pig roast that night and let know about the live music starting after," mentions Sara K. from Grassmere Park Campground, highlighting community-oriented experiences available.

What You Should Know

Zero cell service: Plan accordingly. Many campsites have no connectivity. "We had zero cell service (Verizon)" notes T K. from Ricketts Glen State Park. Download maps and information before arrival.

Water conditions: Variable by season and location. At Riverside Campground & Riverside Roadhouse, site conditions can change rapidly with weather. "We unfortunately got stuck in infamous Northeast PA weather but we made the best of it. There were thunderstorms and campsite was a little flooded," reports Amanda + Will.

Reservation systems: Variable by location. State parks require advance bookings while primitive sites in state forests need permits. For Jakersville CCC Campground, "All it takes is a permit and you can camp at a number of sites with fire rings," explains John S.

Seasonal considerations: Spring flooding common. Campgrounds near creeks face high water risks through May. At Red Rock Mountain Campground, "Peaceful little campground five minutes from Ricketts Glen State Park," notes Kait D., showing its convenient location despite seasonal challenges.

Tips for Camping with Families

Activity planning: Schedule around crowds. Weekdays offer more solitude on trails and at swimming areas. "This state park is just beautiful with a nice lake and beautiful trails. The campground is a bit crowded during peak season without much privacy," notes Vika Z. about Ricketts Glen.

Campsite selection: Research specific site numbers. At Whispering Pines Camping Estates, "Our sites were level, clear, and pristine. A small wooded area separated the tinting area from the RV site with a nice little grove of trees between each campsite," reports Sharon B.

Entertainment options: Some campgrounds provide programming. Various locations offer scheduled activities. "We started with a trip in the summer because of their candy bar hunt and heated swimming pool," mentions Gayle B. about Pioneer Campground's family-friendly approach.

Bathroom facilities: Check availability before booking. Primitive sites lack facilities while established campgrounds provide varying quality. "The only bathrooms were far from the campsites and pretty limited in space. I believe each one had 2 stalls and a shower," notes Sara K. about Grassmere Park Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Bring blocks. Many camping spots near Muncy Valley require leveling equipment. At Ricketts Glen, "Our full hookup site was large with table and fire ring, and required some leveling," reports James S.

Electric availability: Limited in many locations. Private campgrounds typically offer better hookup options than state parks. "We opted for the one with water and electric ($36 a night)," explains Sara K. about Grassmere Park's offerings.

Access challenges: Road conditions vary. At Big Hollow Road Campsites, primitive sites require planning. "Loyalsock SF is amazing with tons of FREE sites (just need a permit from the office). This site was right off the road and close to a cabin, but otherwise very pleasant. Comes with a fire ring and that's it," notes Joann&WellsThePup I.

Space between sites: Research specific loops. RV camping areas have different spacing standards. "One of the quietest and most spacious campgrounds we've ever stayed in. Our campsite was probably a good 200-300 feet or more from the other sites on either side of us," explains Charlie & Danielle B. about Whispering Pines.
