Morgan Lake provides free lakefront camping on the outskirts of La Grande at an elevation of 3,700 feet. The steep gravel road up to the lake creates a cooler climate, with temperatures typically 10-15 degrees lower than surrounding valley areas during summer months. The area maintains the 3-day camping limit policy common to many dispersed sites in the region.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer productive fishing access. At Minam State Recreation Area, campers appreciate being right on the water. "Perfect for the fisherman... Clean, convenient, and right on a productive stretch of the Minam River. Near the confluence of the Minam and Wallowa rivers, this is a perfect base camp for exploring the waters and towns of the Wallowa mountains," notes Tom B.
Natural springs soaking: The natural hot springs provide a unique recreational option. At Grande Hot Springs RV Resort, visitors can enjoy mineral-rich pools. "The soaking pools were amazing. They even had a twilight soak. Very peaceful and relaxing campground. Nature trail along the creek was cool. Saw huge bull frogs, tadpoles, and fish. Also saw mule deer," shares Cheryl S.
Wildlife viewing: Many campers report diverse wildlife sightings across the area. "Our stay here was relaxing and fun. There are natural hot spring soaking pools at the campground. The resort lies next to a wildlife refuge. There are many birds," explains Ursala K. at Grande Hot Springs Resort.
What campers like
Seasonal variations: The area offers different experiences throughout the camping season. "We came in early October, and had lots of space to ourselves. Easy drive-through spots and friendly campers," reports Elizabeth S. from Grande Hot Springs RV Resort.
River access: Riverside camping is highly valued by visitors. Hilgard Junction State Park Campground offers direct river access: "It is right on the grande ronde river which was cool and peaceful when we were there. I am not sure many people know about this spot, I didn't and I have been driving by for 6 years now," shares Steven G.
Budget-friendly options: Free and low-cost camping options are available. "This place is amazing. Clean, convenient, and right on a productive stretch of the Minam River. For $6 (!) you get a great spot literally just a few dozen feet from the water," notes Tom B. about Minam State Recreation Area.
What you should know
Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds require careful driving. Morgan Lake requires navigating a challenging road: "The road up to this campground is VERY steep—definitely smelled my brakes on the way down. But that's the only downside to this nice FREE campground just outside of LaGrande, OR," warns Kathy B.
No potable water: Many campgrounds lack drinking water sources. "Beautiful campground. Maybe 15 sites, and totally free. 3 day camping limit. Sites have picnic tables and fire rings. Pit toilets are available, but no potable water," notes Zachary about Morgan Lake.
Highway noise: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise due to proximity to major roads. "This is my favorite place to stop while travelling through along I84. It is so convenient being right next to the freeway. Only negative is that it's right next to the freeway so it's a little noisy but doesn't bother me," explains Brad C. about Hilgard Junction State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Pet-friendly considerations: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Summerville welcome pets with appropriate restrictions. Bird Track Springs offers a natural setting for families with pets: "When you want the basics, this spot delivers. Bring water. Plenty of space for tents or RVs. Lots of shade and nearby to the Grande Ronde River," notes Jim B.
Wildlife encounters: Wildlife viewing opportunities can engage children but require proper preparation. "Lots of very tall swaying trees. We heard coyotes howling at night," reports Charlotte R. about Bird Track Springs, while another camper mentioned: "At night it got very loud with animals though—we think coyotes were howling from midnight until 3 AM!"
Swimming options: Several locations offer swimming opportunities for families with varying water temperatures. "Visited in April on a Sunday to do day use... The hot tubs are small, but it really doesn't matter if no one is there. They are pool noodle friendly when it's not high occupancy," shares Beth M. about Grande Hot Springs Resort.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: RV hookup options vary significantly between campgrounds. At Spring Creek Campground, "There is a small campground with 6 sites mostly good for campers or tent in a grove of trees with a vaulted outhouse. In the surrounding area there are plenty of dispersed campsites that can hold any size RV," explains Rayne N.
Maneuverability challenges: Some campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. "Not for bigger rigs. 4 spots fairly close together, picnic tables, pit toilets. Loop in is tight, and while we are only 34' long, we're 13.8 on truck and had to do some creative maneuvering to get ourselves back out," warns Erin H. about Spring Creek Campground.
Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies across the region's pet friendly camping areas. "Great little campground far enough from the interstate to be peaceful. Vault toilet was very clean. Verizon was 2 bars, 4g but slow. Wifiranger with AT&T was very fast," reports Charles T. from Spring Creek Campground.
