The dam, completed in 1964 and dedicated by President Lyndon B. Johnson, was originally built for flood control. With over 600 miles of shoreline and 102,000 surface acres of water, Eufaula Lake offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The shoreline ranges from vast expanses of sandy beaches to rocky bluffs, and the scenery is especially beautiful during the fall months, when visitors are treated to an array of vivid autumn colors.

Lake Eufaula State Park is a great choice for an Oklahoma getaway. Whether the stay is short or long-term, a visit to this area will be memorable. Formerly known as Fountainhead State Park, the park is located just south of I-40 near Checotah. Situated on Lake Eufaula, a 102,000 acre reservoir, visitors can enjoy many activities on land and water.
Observe Oklahoma's diverse foliage and wildlife on hiking trails like Bluebird Trail. Visitors can bike around the expansive park's mountain bike trails. Learn about native animals and plant species at the Deep Fork Nature Center, where kids and adults can participate in naturalist programs and activities. The park also offers many playgrounds and a fishing pond.
Enjoy an 18-hole disc golf course at Hummingbird Beach. Disc's are available in the park gift shop. Although there is no running water in the yurts, restroom facilities are located within 50 yards of the Longhorn Loop and Hummingbird Beach yurts, and 1000 yards from the Longhorn Loop Honeymoon yurt. Pets are not allowed inside yurts.

Ideal for meetings or family reunions, the group camp features a fully-equipped kitchen, dining hall, stocked pond and four air-conditioned bunkhouses that accommodate up to 96 people. During hunting season, project lands provide opportunities for waterfowl and whitetail deer. Heyburn Public Hunting Area covers more than 6,000 acres of project lands and provides hunting opportunities for squirrel, rabbit, quail, waterfowl and wild turkey.
The campground has 46 campsites with water and electric hookups, some of which have 50 amp service. Two group shelters, one with 50 amp camping sites and one day-use shelter by the swim beach, are available.
Heyburn lies in a picturesque setting of grasslands and gently sloping, sandstone hills covered with oak trees and scattered with hickory, ash, elm and cottonwood. In the spring, flowering wild plum and redbud trees add color to the soft, green landscape.
