Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Big, beautiful lake!

Great park! Sites are spacious and level. Very clean park. There are several full hook-up sites. Electric sites near the lake. We stayed at site #96. New Bathrooms are under construction. Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids. Dog park nearby. Camp is near beach & marina. Also many shops and restaurants within a 10 minute drive. We will definitely be coming back to Mosquito Lake!

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

Well kept park with good spot spacing

Stayed here the first weekend of October.  Nice spots and many have good spacing from your neighbors.  Pets are welcome.  Facilities are older but well kept.  Bathhouse is heated with showers that have a fiberglass tub surround, not concrete.  Nice hiking trails that connect through the campground.  Hiking trail maps are not great but the trails are marked well. The Lake is a good walk and looks good for kayaking and fishing.  Brought our kayaks but it was a bit too cold.  Big wide spots are 11 and 16.  Nice hammock hangers on the non-electric spots.

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

    Clendening Lake Marina & Campground

    Peaceful serenity

My family and I had never gone tent camping before together, since my husband and I were kids. I have chronic pain and was terrified to go due to my difficulties. This place was amazing!

    PROS:

The shower houses are individual big rooms to use that include a shower with a seat and toilet. They do also have handicap parking&camping spots right by the shower house, no smell even being 89 degrees.

They also have amazing prices for renting out a pontoon, it’s only a max 10 mph. I was able to comfortably fish for 4 hours on this. For the boats we were allowed to park down below right by the docks so I wouldn’t have to walk the hill.

When you book online it needs to be done 2 days out, from where we live (Columbus Ohio) the reception at the camp was very very hard to hear on the phone. It is easier to book online then see them at the office when you arrive, they close at 7 pm. Checkin is at 4 pm and checkout is 2pm for camp set up(you can set up sooner if no one is there)

We were lucky to get a walk up electric spot, although hilly it was beautiful! We were right by the private dock and the residents were very kind, some offered us worms or help with our fire. Even though we were by the public outhouse you could not smell anything until right by the outhouse.

You do need a special plug for the electric, we didn’t realize this and did not bring one. I was panicked at first since I needed a fan to get through the 89 degree weather in a tent but the front office has spares you can borrow! They are a lifesaver up there and so kind, if we could have tipped we would have.

We caught plenty of fish up there for all 3 of us, including my 1 st grader, all we used were worms and was surprised how much we caught.

All in all we were really happy and even convinced my parents to come up with us next year 😊

    CONS:

The drive up was very hilly and lots of buggies. Be careful sometimes the road disappeared and you don’t see the buggy until right there; the road speed is 55mph but we only went between 35-45.

There is no cell service up there so be prepared, we lost it for about 20 minutes before the camp site. We have sprint. Make sure to pack a old school map so you can get around, there is a family dollar store in town, about 4 mile drive, if you forgot anything.

Most neighbors you have our yearly members, this is great for peace but limits the spots they actually have open to rent out by the lake and have electric. We were hoping to get a better spot in the future but they only have a couple of non yearly spots available even a year out.

Guide to Salem

Camping near Salem, Ohio offers easy access to lakes and forests across northeastern Ohio's rural landscape. The region averages 38 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush woodland settings for campers. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 900-1,200 feet with moderate temperature swings between day and night, especially during spring and fall.

What to do

Explore hiking trails and nature: West Branch State Park Campground features multiple wooded trails accessible directly from camping areas. "There are many scenic hiking trails at West Branch. Bridal trails are located on Esworthy Rd," notes one visitor, while another adds, "There are little hideaway trails everywhere, making for a fun adventure!"

Fishing opportunities: Mill Creek Camping at Berlin Lake provides numerous fishing spots along its shoreline. "A very nice and clean campground with many access points to the lake. We were fortunate that our spot was right beside the lake and we could keep the boat docked there during our stay," explains a camper. The lake supports various fish species with shoreline and boat fishing options.

Archery practice: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground maintains an archery range open to visitors. "We come here at least once, sometimes twice per year - we travel about 2 hours to get there. We like to bring our bows and use the archery range," shares one regular visitor. The range accommodates various skill levels with designated shooting areas.

What campers like

Clean, updated facilities: Countryside Campground maintains well-kept bathrooms and shower facilities. "This is easily one of the most beautiful and well kept campgrounds we've stayed at. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were nice and the pool was well kept," reports one visitor. Another notes, "Clean campground, lots to do! Dog friendly! Lake Accessible."

Waterfront camping sites: Atwood Lake Park Campground offers premium lakeside sites with boat access. A camper remarks, "The H campground loops are full hookups, some right on the water. Docks available 50' from our waterfront lot. We could leave our camper, take the boat over to the beach and drop off the grandkids." Sites provide direct water views and easy lake access.

Yurt camping options: West Branch State Park Campground provides yurt accommodations as an alternative to traditional camping near Salem, Ohio. These structures offer solid walls with fabric roofs and typically include basic furnishings. Seasonal yurt camping at Salem area parks includes more comfort than standard tent sites while maintaining an outdoor feel.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially waterfront locations. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" warns one West Branch State Park visitor. This applies particularly to yurt camping near Salem, Ohio, where limited availability means booking well ahead.

Weather considerations: Spring camping brings variable conditions. "It had been raining recently this past week and spring overall. But the staff at the camp office gave us a list of all of the open sites that we could choose from so that we could still camp," shares a Mosquito Lake camper. Many sites in low-lying areas may experience flooding.

Site differences matter: Mill Creek Camping offers varied sites with significant differences. "We book a lakefront site and it is just gorgeous! We have our own private little beach which our dog loves," explains one visitor. Another notes, "Gets loud and crowded on the weekend as usual...the water is muddy and the shoreline is sharp rocks."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: KOA Lake Milton Berlin Lake provides specialized play areas. "My 2 boys had so much fun at the lake and the playground and the bounce pad!" shares one parent. Another visitor mentions, "The campground had so many amenities its hard to name them all! They have a little lake and sliding/jumping off the inflatables."

Playground access: Countryside Campground features play equipment suitable for younger children. "Playground was a hit for our 8yr and under kids," reports a family. The campground also organizes seasonal activities: "Staff had crafts and pumpkin decorating for kids also and were helpful and friendly."

Family programming: Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA arranges regular kid-centered events. A visitor observed, "Kids trick or treating to each camp spot" during fall weekends, while another mentioned, "An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend." Most family activities require no additional fees.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Tomlinson Run State Park Campground requires preparation for uneven ground. "Most of the camp sites have electricity, but most aren't level," advises an experienced camper. RVers should bring leveling blocks or jacks, particularly for sites on hillsides.

Hookup variations: Countryside Campground offers different hookup configurations depending on location. "We spent a long weekend in a pull thru site. The pull thru sites were a tad small but nice and long," notes one RVer. Another advises, "Get there early or you'll have many vehicles and campers to watch for as you back in!"

Seasonal considerations: Off-season camping offers different experiences with fewer crowds. One winter visitor to Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA reported, "This was an awesome place for a winter trip! The tent sites were big and right on the lake." Year-round RV camping is available at select locations, though water hookups may be disconnected during freezing weather.
