What to do
Hiking trails: Access at Alum Creek State Park Campground where you can explore multiple paths. "There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. There is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone," notes Jill B.
Disc golf: Play a round at John Bryan State Park Campground which maintains a complete course. "There is a disc golf course lots of mountain bike trails and hiking trails! As well as some other great amenities," explains Shane T. The course is accessible year-round and requires no additional fees beyond campground registration.
Fishing: Cast a line at Alum Creek State Park where multiple campers report good catches. "This is not a campground - it's more like a park. It does have good fishing and a playground, and it is a good place for a cookout," says Sarah W. Bank fishing is available directly from several waterfront campsites without requiring a boat.
What campers like
Wooded privacy: Enjoy natural separation between sites at Cross Creek Camping Resort where the grounds maintain substantial tree coverage. "This is a RV resort close to a lake with a lot of seasonal campers. It is busy on the weekend but was very quiet during the week. The sites are close, but not unreasonably close," reports Dave B.
Quiet atmosphere: Experience peaceful camping at Alton RV Park where noise levels are strictly monitored. "This is a small, maybe 35 sites, clean well maintained campground. The owners have rules and they DO enforce 'em," notes Sharon J. The campground enforces quiet hours and limits visitor numbers to maintain its tranquil environment.
Clean facilities: Utilize well-maintained shower and restroom buildings at Buck Creek State Park Campground where maintenance standards remain high throughout the season. "Showers were very nice and clean. Several water spickets throughout the park if you needed to access them," confirms Lisa M. Most campgrounds in the area provide hot water showers included with your camping fee.
What you should know
Site reservations: Book well in advance at popular campgrounds, especially for holiday weekends. At Alum Creek, "the prices here are reasonable, however most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (ie lakefront) are always taken," warns Catherine.
Pet restrictions: Follow specific rules at each dog friendly campground near Plain City regarding leashed areas and waste disposal. Cross Creek Camping Resort offers "Small dog park. Normal size lots for an RV park. Super crowded on a summer weekend," according to Malcolm. Designated pet exercise areas vary significantly between campgrounds.
Seasonal considerations: Check operating schedules as several campgrounds close during winter months. "Tree Haven Campground provides water and electric hookups with pet-friendly policies from May through November," while other facilities may have limited winter services.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose Scioto Grove Metro Park if you need facilities for children. "Somewhere among the hustle and bustle and just outside Columbus you can find this hidden gem of a park in Grove City. Backpacking sites, rope bridge crossing over a creek that kids and adults would love to explore," says Karen K.
Pool availability: Utilize swimming facilities at pet friendly campgrounds near Plain City during hot summer days. At Berkshire Campgrounds, "This place is huge, tons of paths for walking and exploring. Also features mini golf, volleyball, basketball, an in-ground pool and a pond," reports Jess. Most pool facilities are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Weekend activities: Participate in organized events at Cross Creek Camping Resort which offers regular programming. "They also have themed-event weekends, which are really fun!" Catherine mentions. Activities typically run Friday evening through Sunday morning and may require registration.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Request newer sites at Pastime Campground when making reservations. "There are 38 grass sites that are a bit snug, but mostly pleasant. New in June 2019 are 18 gravel padded sites, with lots of space," explains Ron G.
Hookup details: Verify utility specifications before booking, particularly for larger rigs. "All sites are W/E. All the new gravel sites and half the grass ones have 50/30/20A electric, the rest are 30/20A. The park has a dump station. Two of the gravel sites have sewer hookup," notes Ron G. about Pastime Campground.
Water pressure: Bring pressure regulators, especially at dump stations. "Be careful of the water pump at the dump station. The water pressure was high so be sure to use a pressure regulator if rinsing your tanks," advises Timothy G. from his experience at Pastime Campground.
