Most state park campgrounds provide basic amenities including drinking water, electric hookups, and shower facilities, though quality varies by location. Winter camping is available at several parks, with Paint Creek State Park offering heated bathrooms with showers during colder months. Riverside camping experiences receive particularly high ratings from visitors to the area. Sandy Springs Campground consistently earns five-star reviews for its Ohio River views, with one camper noting, "It's nice to sit outside and watch the river and barges traveling up and down." Site spacing varies significantly between campgrounds, with some state parks drawing criticism for crowded conditions. A visitor to Paint Creek observed, "This campground was huge, with very few trees and small lots very close together." By contrast, Shawnee State Park receives praise for privacy between sites despite their proximity. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound throughout the region, with deer, raccoons, and wild turkey commonly spotted. Families appreciate the recreational amenities at many parks, including beaches, boat rentals, fishing access, and hiking trails.

I drove an hour and a half to get here because dyrt showed that we had full AT&T service here that is not the trucks we have between one and two bars of AT&T service so we’ll see if we drove here for me to be able to work for a couple days and be out in God’s creation

    Rocky Fork State Park Campground

    A place to sleep

Camp sites are very tightly packed together and feels like I'm in someone's backyard that is having trouble growing grass.

Equestrian Campground — Carter Caves State Resort Park

    Under Construction

The equestrian sites are full hookups and able to accommodate large rigs with pull through sites. The RV sites are under construction and will be some time before they are done. Bathhouse is clean and up to date. The roads are narrow and windy.

    Sandy Springs Campground

    A Wonderful Campground!

We had a wonderful weekend stay at this campground; we were fortunate to get a river view site which was amazing. It is so peaceful to watch the river and see the occasional boat or barge go by. The campground is a very nice facility with unique cabins and nice full hook up sites. They have a nice store, restroom and shower facilities and they even have a small menu that they can prepare and bring to your site including a delicious chocolate chip cookie desert!

The owners are the real gem here; they are so friendly and accommodating and go out of their way to make you feel at home! We had a grandchild visit and we forgot a jacket and Julie(owner) went out of her way to find a hoodie out of her Halloween stock, so he would have something for the weekend.

    We will be back!

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Great site, not a lot to do.

Primitive Site 22 was fantastic, tucked away from everyone and quiet. Greenbo just doesn't have a lot to do if you arent boating. And that's okay. We just wanted a lazy trip anyway.

    Rocky Fork State Park Campground

    Fine tenting, poorly kept

    8/13/2025

Got here after dark, but navigated to a pretty secluded loop that's just for tenting (site 61 - see map). Stakes went in fine. Seemed to be a lot of different types of spiders, which was cool to see and even cooler that they didn't bug me. Less cool - the site wasn't very clean - bits of trash that a park attendant/ranger definitely should've been picking up. Moreover, there were stray cats living in that section (I saw three), which were very cute but I'm sure they're not living their best life and the wildlife probably don't appreciate them being around either. I called later to let the park know (nobody was around during my stay) and they said they'd get maintenance on it. If you stay here and see them, I'd urge you to let the park know again, or maybe call animal control.

    Shawnee State Park Campground

Attractive campground with variety of sites and amenities

Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites.   Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path.  We stayed in 12.  If you don't mind hauling your gear a short distance from your car, sites like this are perfect as they're  for tent campers only.  The campground had fun amenities for kids, like a very small mini golf course and an outdoor screen for movie nights.  The shower houses were clean and the small camp store convenient.  All the Shawnee State Park staff I met were super friendly and helpful.

    Ashland Huntington West KOA

    Good Basic KOA

Plenty of spots, including pull thrus. More affordable than some of the nearby state “resort” parks, though without much in the way of shade or scenery. Staff is very kind, helpful, and understanding. Perfect for an overnight.

Guide to Otway

The area surrounding Otway, Ohio sits on the northern edge of the Appalachian foothills, with elevations ranging from 550 to 950 feet above sea level. Camping spots near Otway, Ohio benefit from the region's moderate climate, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping season. Most campgrounds in this area sit near small lakes or along the Ohio River, creating distinct microclimates that affect camping conditions throughout the year.

What to do

Disc golf course: 18 holes at Shawnee State Park Campground provide recreation beyond traditional camping activities. A recent visitor noted, "Just a beautiful park. Clean well maintained. Lots of amenities. Paddle boats, marina, 18 hole disc golf, bike park, huge dog park, store, archery range, playground and trails."

Geocaching adventures: The forested areas around Otway offer numerous geocaching opportunities. Shawnee State Park features multiple caches hidden throughout its 1,160 acres, creating an outdoor treasure hunt experience for visitors of all ages.

Backpack trail hikes: For experienced hikers, longer trail options exist within Shawnee State Forest. A camper described, "Backpack trail, 23 and 40 miles loops with 7 camping areas, register and enjoy. Equestrians get 70 miles and primitive camping." These trails require proper preparation and navigation skills.

River views and fishing: Sandy Springs Campground offers access to the Ohio River for fishing and watching river traffic. One visitor shared, "The campground offers something for everyone: playground equipment, basketball hoop and various balls, access to the river for fishing, and absolutely stunning views of the Ohio as well as the surrounding hills."

What campers like

Private bathrooms: Sandy Springs Campground receives consistent praise for its facilities. A recent visitor commented, "The bathrooms and laundry room are very clean. The surrounding area seeps in history and we enjoyed exploring the area."

Miniature golf: Pike Lake State Park Campground includes a small course that provides entertainment for families. A camper mentioned, "We walked up to the camp store which had a ton of items. If you forgot to bring it, they probably had it. There are two playgrounds, one in the campground and one right across the way."

Secluded tent sites: Several parks offer tent-only sites away from RVs. One Shawnee State Park visitor explained, "Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites. Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path. If you don't mind hauling your gear a short distance from your car, sites like this are perfect as they're for tent campers only."

Winter camping access: Some campgrounds remain open year-round with varying levels of service. Pike Lake State Park maintains winter operations, allowing for off-season outdoor experiences when many other facilities close.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: The entire area experiences spotty connectivity. One camper at Turkey Creek Campground noted, "There is non-existent cell service (Verizon) so we were happy there was an attendant at the booth when we arrived just before 6 pm on a Sunday evening."

Campsite selection importance: Many campgrounds have significant variability between sites. A visitor observed, "Site Quality: We had reserved Site 63 based on a review I read probably on The Dyrt but I would not recommend this site as it was decidedly not level and had a very short pad. Many of the other sites had even shorter pads; these would really best be suitable for tent campers."

Extension cord needs: Several campgrounds have electric hookups positioned far from camping pads. Bringing extra-long extension cords and water hoses can prevent frustration upon arrival, especially for RVers requiring connections.

Limited grocery options: The rural location means convenience stores are the primary shopping option. Most campgrounds have small stores with basic supplies, but prices are higher than in town. Stock up on groceries before arriving in the area.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: Long's Retreat Family Resort offers extensive water recreation options. A camper shared, "The kids can either swim up at the lake (with multiple water slides and a huge floating dock with diving board), the little kids can have fun in the splash pad right at the beach, go carts, rock wall climbing, basketball, arcade and so much more."

Holiday weekend activities: Many campgrounds host special events during holiday periods. Shawnee State Park organizes Halloween festivities with site decorating competitions and trick-or-treating for children, making it a popular family destination in autumn.

No-tech getaways: Limited connectivity creates opportunities for family bonding without digital distractions. A Long's Retreat visitor mentioned, "Love no cell reception! Quiet clean and staff (owner) is always pleasant and helpful!" This makes the area ideal for families seeking to disconnect from screens.

Local history exploration: The region contains numerous historical sites within short driving distances of most campgrounds. This area offers educational opportunities alongside traditional outdoor recreation, with pioneer settlements and Native American historical sites accessible by car.

Tips from RVers

Site length considerations: Shawnee State Park-Ohio River Campground provides larger sites for RVs. A visitor remarked, "This campground has some of the largest and best spaces camp sites of any full hookup we have visited. There are great walking paths and biking/scooter options."

Drainage issues: Heavy rainfall can affect camping conditions at several campgrounds. Pike Lake State Park has reported flooding issues during storms, with a camper noting, "It rained quite a bit and many of the sites got flooded. The ground here doesn't drain well."

Mismatched site descriptions: RVers should verify site dimensions before booking. One Shawnee visitor warned, "We were told that the site we'd been assigned was room enough for 52'. Our RV is only 34' so that would be more than enough. We got there and it was maybe 20-24" in length, with no wiggle room because one end was the park road/driveway, the other end a hill."

Full hookup availability: Rocky Fork State Park Campground offers the most extensive RV accommodations in the area. A visitor highlighted, "This is a very nice campground. Nice lake, boating, playgrounds, bath houses, some full hook up sites. There are more good sites than bad. 4,5,9,10, 147-165 those were my favorites."
