    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with extra perks for the Dogs

In addition to having a pretty lake, lovely campsites that are spread apart nicely, clean facilities, lots of shade, boat ramps, etc.. this park is unique for it's Dog Park facility.

2 large fenced in field areas. One for small dogs, and one for large. There is enough room for several games of dog frisbee to happen at once. Then, there are 2 large fenced in areas for lake access. Balls, dog doo bags, trash bins.. all there. Lots of shade, water fountains, and plenty of running room. I can't rave about this park enough!

The only downside is there is poison ivy lacing the trail from the campsite down to the water, and the Dog Park portion is about 2 miles from the campsites.

    Delaware State Park Campground

This is our 4th trip here

We have never had a bad site at Delaware, rowdy neighbors on occasion but the park itself and the site are great. Lots of hiking trails, stocked fishing pond for kids, disc golf, dog park and the lake itself.

    Site 187 this trip.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Great Campground with some areas for that Improvements

Very peaceful campground. There is a train track in the vicinity which every now and then you can hear.....but not bad. The lake is within walking distance from the campgrounds. Our dogs love this place especially when taken for long walks along the pavement. There is a market with great pizza nearby.

There is a nearby dog park as well.

The original check-in station burned down last year and the park has a temporary hut for check in. I hope they rebuild the check-in station and bring back the store. There are a lot of downed trees (either naturally fell or man made) which need to be cleaned up. Some sites can get flooded or become very muddy with heavy rains. The past few years have been problematic with ticks...so be vigilant.

Guide to Marion

Campgrounds near Marion, Ohio provide year-round access for outdoor enthusiasts, with many sites offering electric hookups for extended stays during all four seasons. The region features gently rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 900-1,100 feet, creating natural drainage that helps campsites dry quickly after rain. Local parks maintain trails that connect camping areas to fishing spots and recreational facilities.

What to do

Disc golf adventures: Mt Gilead State Park Campground offers a unique disc golf course for campers seeking recreational activities. A reviewer noted, "We took a night walk with headlamps and found the disc golf course. This was laid out to be a crazy course and included repelling ropes!" The course provides a challenging experience for both beginners and experienced players.

Fishing opportunities: Delaware State Park Campground provides accessible fishing areas near camping sites. One camper mentioned, "Seems like this was the last fall weekend before winter... There was a huge playground with swings, disc golf course, putt putt and a dog park all around the entrance area." The park stocks fish regularly during spring and summer months.

Swimming options: Alum Creek State Park Campground maintains multiple swimming areas including a dedicated campground beach. A family shared, "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must and we even got close to wildlife (aka some pesky raccoons)." The swimming areas include designated shallow sections for children.

What campers like

Private camping spaces: Cross Creek Camping Resort offers sites with good spacing between units. A reviewer noted, "The sites are close, but not unreasonably close. Good mix of pull through and back in and is big rig friendly. Plenty to do for the kids." Many campsites include trees that create natural boundaries between spots.

Clean facilities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Columbus maintains well-kept restrooms and common areas. A camper mentioned, "Bathrooms were clean and in great shape, and all around non stop fun activities for the family." The campground performs regular facility maintenance throughout the day.

Weekend activities: Cardinal Center Campground organizes regular themed events for guests. One visitor explained, "We went the weekend it was Fall fest. Plenty of activities for the kids! Trick or treat, glow parade, decorate your own pumpkin, etc!" These scheduled events typically run from May through October with special holiday weekends planned throughout the season.

What you should know

Site spacing varies: Some campgrounds offer more privacy than others. At Mt Gilead State Park, one camper observed, "Small park, very small however we loved it. Our site had a deck right behind the camping pad because the site has a descent slope. The fire pit was down the slope which was cool being out of site from walkers." Request corner sites for more seclusion.

Weather considerations: Drainage can be an issue at certain campgrounds during heavy rain. A visitor to Alum Creek State Park Campground advised, "Sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather." The campground's hillside sites typically drain better than those in flat areas.

Reservation requirements: Campgrounds fill quickly during summer and holiday weekends. According to one reviewer at Alum Creek, "The prices here are reasonable, however most sites are booked by seasonal campers who pay for the whole season and leave their RV/set-ups in one place the whole season, so all the choice sites (ie lakefront) are always taken." Make reservations 3-6 months in advance for peak season stays.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation access: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Dogwood Valley provides multiple water activities for children. A family visitor shared, "We swam in the lake and pools. We loved the paddle boat ducks and swans. The kids had the best time at archery. We watched them feed the fish at the lake in the morning, that was such a fun experience." The park offers daily feeding demonstrations where children can participate.

Playground options: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Marion feature updated play structures for various age groups. At Mt Gilead, a camper noted, "Nice campground that's very well maintained. Some of the sites are close together, especially in the site with full hookups, but not too bad. The camp has nice trails, a fishing lake and disc golf course along with other activities."

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer nature programs specifically designed for younger campers. A visitor to Alum Creek State Park mentioned, "There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. There is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone." Rangers often lead morning nature walks suitable for school-age children.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Sunset Springs RV Resort provides quality utility connections for extended stays. A guest reported, "We enjoyed our time at Sunset Springs. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Facilities are clean and modern, and the grounds very nice. Work is underway to continuously improve the sites previously dominated by long term seasonals. New pull through are perfect for our 40 foot motorhome." The resort has recently upgraded electrical service to accommodate larger units.

Site leveling considerations: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Marion have uneven terrain requiring leveling equipment. At Cardinal Center Campground, a camper advised, "We spent one night here. This is a very nice, easy access CG with wide, spacious, and level pull through and back-in gravel sites." Bring leveling blocks even for sites described as level, as conditions can change seasonally.

Access road navigation: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads. At Delaware State Park, a visitor noted, "The drive through is gorgeous, can be very dark at night just a heads up. Very quiet with decent amount of space between campsites." Larger RVs should call ahead to confirm access road width and turning radius requirements.
